- This is a Beginner & Intermediate lesson on how to play 7th chords on the mandolin (e.g C7, G7, E7 etc). I'll start by explaining the theory behind them and then we'll play a short arpeggio exercise. Then I'll show you a 7 shape that means you can play ALL 7 chords on the mandolin!
For the intermediate players, once you have mastered the basic shape, I'll show you a slightly harder one that comes in useful on certain chords.
For both standards, we'll have a play through Man of Constant Sorrow as an example piece.

Thanks for the lesson my friend! Cheers from Knoxville TN!
Thank you for this lesson. I especially liked that you explained what a 7th chord is and showed the scale with it included. This makes it clear.
Thanks Mike! Very helpful.
Can it be called Dominant 7th?
Mike, thanks for the lesson. I'm trying to figure out this G7 chord as played by Jerry Rosa Mandolin 101 Master Class czcams.com/video/m6XNPY-MK9k/video.htmlsi=tHrNvJ2xJuVCxVlu
Starts around 9:15 until 10:30. Any thoughts or advice. Cheers. 🤔
Holy moly that's a stretch! He's turning the G chop chord: 7523 into 732x so, nothing on the E string, middle finger on 3rd fret of D string.
Then on a C chord: 523x he turns it into basically a double stop: 32xx for C7
Hope that helps!
Mike
