  • There have been many amazing individual performances in State Of Origin History, such as Andrew Johns in Game 2 of 2005 and Cameron Smith in Game 3 in 2017.
However, there has never been a more dominant match than Wally Lewis' performance in Game 1 of the 1984 series.
Sit back and enjoy "The King" at his best, utterly controlling a game of Rugby League at the highest level 'State Of Origin' in the toughest era of the game. You'll be sure to be inspired!

don't forget he played with a broken arm for a half. he was deceptively quick, amazingly strong, could read the play in advance. great defender. the best player i have ever seen, and that includes todays sooks. see that try he scored with 4 poms hanging on to him, 2 of them punching him in the face, and he drags them all over the line and scores. the absolute best. bar none .

Well said. I saw it with my own eyes at the ground at many Origins, Tests and club games in the 80s and early 90s. I agree...and if he had have been fonder of training and been provided with the current sports science, nutrition and specialised coaching the players get these days...just imagine how much greater he could be in this era. The King of Origin no doubt.

Wally Lewis owned origin for the best part of a decade. He was big, strong, mobile, an unbelievable defender and reader of the game. He was skilful, fearless, intimidating, passionate, and led Queensland to victory almost on every occasion he put on the maroon jersey. NSW threw everything at him, but he almost always prevailed, leading the way for his side each and every time. He is the most naturally gifted rugby league player I've ever seen to come out of Queensland, and he is probably still the most revered and feared man south of the Tweed River when it comes to rugby league.
He and Arthur Beetson are the two greatest players to ever play for Queensland's State of Origin team in my opinion, and there really should only be three statues at Lang Park that need to be there as far as rugby league in Queensland is concerned :
    • Senator Ron McAuliffe
    • Arthur Beetson
    • Wally Lewis
Those three names alone represent the whole story of the State of Origin in Queensland.

anyone player who knows the game. will tell you wally was a generation ahead of most players in his era. as was the late arthur beetson. probally 2-3 generations ahead of his time. there was never been a player who dominated a game like arthur beetson. period.
even the king had a hero to get inspiration from, and his name was arthur beetson.
arthur could dominate and actually win a game by himself with ordinary players around him, even with reserve grade players playing along side of him.
the only reason arthur never got the recognition and publicity behind him, because he wasnt marketing material. to ruff and ready for the media. didnt suit there poofy style.
just ask wally the wanker who the best player is of all time. no comparison.

These games are so much better than today.
The 10 meter offside has ruined the game. The play the balls are so slow, I can go and make a cup of tea between tackles. And denying the markers a chance to ruck the ball back is backward thinking.
We had the greatest game ever and superleague came in with $$$$s and took away everything that made the game exciting.

@@huepix I do agree with you. Certain rule changes and the intense scrutiny on the line and the fact the sport is a business now has lead to players not willing to take risks and play creatively on the field and in certain cases playing with less passion and loyalty has seen the game erode a bit. It's still a great sport Rugby League, but in totality it's not the greatest game of all that it was in the 80s and 90s.
