Helicopter Flight: Icicle Creek to Wenatchee

- COME FLY WITH ME for the second half of my August 27 flight from Malaga to Leavenworth to Wenatchee. I start by making a U-turn in the canyon where Icicle Creek comes out of the mountains, showing off a waterfall, and taking a higher level direct flight to Wenatchee. Along the way, I talk about radio communications and helicopter operations. You'll hear radio calls and see Penny the Tiny Dog make a half-hearted attempt to find shade in the front seat.
Note: I just realized that both this video and the video of the first half of this flight ( • Helicopter Flight Up t... ) have the wrong date on the opening screen. The flight was done on August 27, not July 27. Sorry about that. Can't change it now without re-uploading the videos.
About Me and the Helicopter
- I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
- The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
- My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
About the Video
- The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl), one of which is connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
- The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream.net/screenflow...
- The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/

Just keeping it real. :-)
Just came back to your channel after a minute and discovered why I love it.. helicopters, helicopters, helicopters 😃 ...
and you make it all so accessible for a currently grounded pilot
For those who have not met Maria. I was walking through a market yesterday and a face caught my eye. I said " you are Maria!" She said " yes I am". She shared some time and stories with me. Maria is genuine, smart, focused and very fun to talk with. Thank you for these videos Maria.
It was nice meeting you yesterday! And thanks for the kind words!
Lucky you 😊
Thanks for sharing. I knew she was a wonderful woman...!
Thanks for another cool video, Maria. Your co-star, Penny, is also adorable. Love to you both!
Being able to see the scenery is everything for us non-techies.
thnk;s lady great pics as usual ,great inform.
I’ve learned to multitask too, like you when flying your R44 (going from memory). Anyway, while the ads are playing, I read the comments. Definitely a wonderful crowd of enthusiasts...! Keep on, keep on..! Be safe,...yet,...enjoy
Maria, I watch your videos in South Africa and enjoy them very much. The great thing about your videos is your calm conversational style of narration, and cool confidence. I’m really excited each time you upload a new video, because I know I’m goning to learn something interesting (be it about your home, your town, Penny or flying). Regarding the thumbs down you’ve received... I don’t get it either. I don’t get it!
Great appreciation, from SA!
Do love helicopters, I live near Dartmoor in the UK they train special forces like the SAS and SBS on the moors and quite frequently they will over fly my house at low level in Chinooks in the middle of the night, which as far as I’m concerned is utterly awesome. I often run outside to see if I catch them thank god I have no near neighbours! Chinook as far as I’m concerned is the best sounding copter ever made.
What an amazing river the Columbia is. That far up from the Pacific and it's that big a river! Thanks for the video.
Agreed. But I think that one reason it's so big up here is because of the dams holding the water back to create lakes. If there were no dams, I think there would be a lot less water in the river here this time of year -- and likely a lot more in spring.
Great show
Hope those who demand more radio comms are now satisfied. Why not just let the experienced pilot do her job as she wants.
Anyways, this was the greatest landing clearance I've heard, "Oookaay."
Awesome video ! I adore helicopters 🚁
I watch your videos in New Zealand, itself a stunningly beautiful country, and I love the views from your helicopter. Your commentaries are always interesting and when you tell me where you are I follow your trip on Google maps. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous flights with me.
Thank you for making such great videos. I’ve always wanted to fly a helicopter and it’s a lot of fun just getting to watch you do it. Thanks for all the beautiful flights you have taken us with you on!
My Sunday treat, long may you continue to fly 🇮🇪
I have realized what is good about being a viewer (at least as far as I'm concerned). You can virtually have a great scenic flight in a helicopter and really have no chance of getting nervous! . Lol. :)
Not to brag, but unless conditions are rough, my passengers don't get nervous. ;-)
Another interesting and well done video. Thank you.😊
Sunday funday! Cup of coffee! 20 minutes of relaxation with great views and commentary. Thanks Maria 👍🙌👍
Beautiful scenery.
Thanks for taking the time to put together these amazing videos. At the time of this comment there are 151 likes including mine and actually 0 dislikes.😁 Love your videos and keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Still no dislikes 17 hours after your post. I guess the trolls haven't shown up yet. LOL.
Such an awesome flight on a flawless day. Thanks for what you do and I look forward to all your "stuff". 👌
Love your videos! I've always wanted to be a pilot, you make it look like so much fun. Plus you are so detailed in pointing things out, it makes it almost feel like we are there with you. Love it!
That's because I talk too much! LOL.
Love your flights and your Commentary! Love your doggy too! Regards FreeJ from Western Maryland!💕💕💕
What a gorgeous flying day. Thanks for another super trip Maria... great visibility.
I love the real world in flight maneuvers... Keep us motivated to keep flying!!!
Very nice ride Maria and I'm glad to hear you don't use redundant radio talk like folks seem to think is proper these days. Once you've said Wenatchee at the start of the transmission people are not going to forget where you are by the end of the transmission. No need to say Wenatchee again. Drives me crazy.
Thanks! You know, in this mountainous area, there's only one airport using this frequency. If people can't figure out that I'm calling Wenatchee, they probably shouldn't be piloting an aircraft.
@@FlyingMAir I agree wholeheartedly! Thanks for what you do!
There's a reason for saying the airport name at the beginning and end of a transmission. If you are talking to another aircraft or a passenger and miss the first part of the transmission you wait for the repeat of the location at the end. It's called safety for a reason. Rather be redundant than dead from a lack of communication as required by Federal law. That's why it is taught in every flight school. Love the videos, keep up the great flying Maria.
Hey, Steven. Read my comment above. There is ONE airport in this MOUNTAINOUS area. Only ONE airport can be on the call. There is NO REASON to mention that single airport's name TWICE in this area. When I fly in other areas with multiple airports on the same frequency, then YES, I do try to end the transmission with the airport's name again.
I think it's more important to keep radio transmissions concise and eliminate unnecessary information than to mindlessly do what we were trained to do when it makes no sense to do so. Mentioning the airport name twice in this area is redundant and unnecessary and I try NOT to do it.
Love your video's!
Keep it up love your work
Thanks again, for sharing, Maria! Another great flight.
Enjoy all the rides. I am not a pilot but have had the opportunity to fly single engine Pipers and a Navajo twin engine. My ex husband was a corporate pilot and flight instructor he would let me do some of the piloting. A great thrill. I have not been a passenger on a helicopter but would love to experience that. Thanks for bringing us along.
A Sunday joy.
Looking forward to the Entiat flight!
Another great video. Enjoy them a lot. Keep it up.
Subs are climbing 100k here we come.
I wish. LOL.
FlyingMAir 👍 keep doing what you are doing.
Really enjoyed the video as always, please keep them up. Wenache looks like a lovely place and you are luckily to live there! Maybe do a short tour in hour car so we can see what it’s like there (especially if the weather is not great for flying etc)
Want to learn more about Wenatchee? Start with these three videos: www.voortexproductions.com/wearewenatchee (Note that a lot of the aerial footage was shot from my helicopter.) Also: we make our luck. :-)
Love your videos - especially the 7 you did with Nick. Many years ago I started working on a pilots license but never finished. Thanks!
Thanks. And as I just told someone else, you might find the time and money to finish up that pilot certificate someday in the future.
The Dam to Dam video was great.
That helicopter was an AS350 Squirrel btw (I’m a helicopter geek hehe)
Hello Penny the tiny dog!!!♥️
Good
Thanks for the video. When I did my fixed wing in '75 I did my training out of Martin Field in College Place WA, I did several X country flights to Yakima/Wenatchee/Euphrata. Nice country !
It's pretty out here. Great weather for flying, too -- usually clear with very little rain on this side of the mountains.
Great views so far!! Looks like you got more subscribers!! Yes, loved it!!
Aww, thank you!! You are so welcome 😊 I just enjoy these videos so much ♥️
Yes, I'm up to 58 members, which is really appreciated!

Love the videos keep doing what your doing inspiration to many 😬🚁. I have 8 hours on my ppl training but a farm purchase is priority then I look forward to resuming and owning my own r44 🚁😁
Woohoo!!
Once you have the post installed on the frame, consider one of the snazzy new 360° cameras (GoPro Fusion, etc.) when the budget allows. It enables panning of the image, so you can show features to the left and right as required when you edit the video. Looking forward to more geological explorations with Nick in 2020 too, by the way... =)
I always look forward to getting to ride along with you in the videos! Thumbs up from me. I don't understand why anyone would give any of your vids a thumbs down either. If you don't like it just move on!! CZcams should get rid of the thumbs down button IMO. Thanks for going to the trouble of sharing your flights!
Some people are idiots. ;-)
Maria, who the heck dares to moan about not enough camera's, for as far as I can see, you have one rear facing, so we can check on Penny and the main one for the flight image - BOTH are perfectly adequate in my opinion.. Beautiful flight as always, seeing "Airmiles Penny" is a bonus and the sunny day makes for stunning images from that wonderful vantage point. Just LOVE your videos and whilst I have never visited, seeing the landscape you fly over, makes me feel as if I have.. You mentioned the upcoming overhaul, is it a lengthy process and whilst not wanting to be too nosey, is it costly??
I expect the overhaul to cost $250,000. Not a typo. Any ideas on raising that money in 12 months?
@@FlyingMAir Crowd fund. Put it out that you give joy to unfortunate types, who would get to fly for free. That, or, get down to the tourist board and tell them you are heavily into promoting the area and encouraging visitors..
Hi Maria, yet another nice video looking at the wonderful countryside around where you live. Many thanks.
In the latter part of the video, you mentioned that the vehicle requires servicing. Just wondered, what is the periodicity of the servicings for an R44 and the cost (if it is not confidential).
By the way, a good idea to mount another camera showing the instruments. That would be appreciated.
Cheers. Keep up the good work. Fly safe.
I'll cover that in detail in an upcoming blog post. The short version is every 12 years or 2200 flight hours, whichever comes first. I expect this next overhaul to cost about $250,000 (not a typo).
@@FlyingMAir Yikes!
I think you would make a great helicopter trainer Maria because you are so considerate and explain things so well?
Have you ever considered qualifying?
Sure. But an extra $5K of insurance expense and a desire to spend each flight enjoying myself rather than trying to keep the person on the controls from killing us is what made me decided being a CFI just wasn't for me.
@@FlyingMAir 😅
In the United States, aircraft are not required to even have radios and, indeed, in the Southwest and other places, there are many aircraft that don't have radios because they don't need them (for where they fly) and they are restored antique aircraft that never had radios (or even electric starters) installed when they were built.
Why do flight schools teach ARROW??
Neither "R" in ARROW is for Radio, although one was supposedly for Radio License. That's no longer required. Flight schools now teach AROW: Airworthiness Certificate, Registration, Owner's Manual (POH), and weight and balance.
Great video, interesting to hear how the radio chatter works in your area. Love penny! Is she a Cairn terrier?
She's a chihuahua - terrier mix. We don't know what kind of terrier.
There's always going to be some Beavis and Butt-head troll types that like to click the thumbs down button. no matter what.
Thanks for another fun flight. Have you thought about a GoPro outside, maybe underneath, or on a skid, that will provide a clear view of the terrain?
Yes. I've got a few interesting solutions in the works.
Great video as usual. The only complaint I could have is that your voice and radio communication is coming from the left channel which is quite annoying when listening with the headphones.
I'm working on that. Not sure what's going on. I adjusted the audio jack for my last flight -- I think you (or maybe someone else) complained about this before -- and lost all audio on the following clip. I'm doing the best I can with the equipment I have. Really.
We don't have to file flight plans for VFR in the UK either! I think it's recommended if 10nm offshore or flying over sparse terrain. Same for radio calls. I don't have to make them in our class G. Legally I could fly over an uncontrolled airfield at 500ft with no radio calls but I'd be a complete dick for doing so.
Agreed! LOL!
There seems to be very little traffic in your skies. Are there any other recreational aviation in your area, helicopter, paramotors, hot air balloons? Like you said you could fly all day, be nice area for paramotor just sitting in a swing in the sky..
It was a weekday, so that really limits recreational flying. We have some small planes, and one or two privately owned helicopters. There are gliders operating out of Wenatchee, but not many and only a few months out of the year. They generally stay to the north. There are paragliders north of Wenatchee in the Chelan area, which also has more gliders. I've never seen a balloon nearby; I suspect the terrain makes hot air balloon flight tricky. And wind, of course, we tend to get a lot of wind.
How does a pilot check helicopter before take off? And what would you like to tell about helicopter maintenance?
This is really cool. I'm originally from Monroe the other side of the hill from where you are. I am now living in Hawaii and have taken two flights and really like it. Learning to hover is really challenging at the moment. Really enjoy watching your video as I am familiar with the area. Have you ever flown from Wenatchee to Monroe or Harvey Field or is that beyond your fuel cpapcity?
It’s well within range, but I haven’t had any reason to go there. I did fly over on my way to Anacortes once.
FlyingMAir I just went for flight number three. I felt a lot better this time. Did 27 miles to another airport and back. I am starting to get the hang of hovering. I watched a few of your videos and they really helped. They don’t have doors on these birds here. So, i am still getting used to the fact that I’m not going to fall out the door. If I didn’t mention, these are R22’s. They also have r44 and a r66. But, I need to keep it on the cheap for now and learn in the 22. Thanks for posting your videos. It was good visual training for me to see and gave me a better idea of what to expect from what I’m going to see and feel while flying.
Hi Maria,
I try not to piss off the federales too. Working on getting my medical back. I have a question, how does the shoutout work? Take care.
Willy Makeit: this video from Maria may answer your question: czcams.com/video/sHSqlQqeP1A/video.html.
By "shoutout," I mean mentioning the names of specific channel members. I did a shoutout to Rebecca Allen and Saratoga Pilot in this video.
Personally I think if someone is gonna click the Thumbs Down,,they should at least leave a comment as to why.
Agreed!
Is taking passengers on a tour, like your dam to dam runs, since you have paid passengers on board, considered a chartered flight? Requiring you to create a flight plan?
I only need a flight plan for Part 135 flights. I can make almost any flight a Part 135 flight, but flights over 25 miles from the point of origination OR flights that start at one point and end at another MUST be flown as Part 135 flights. So a tour around Wenatchee that does not go more than 25 miles from out starting point and ends at the same place we started would NOT be considered Part 135 (unless I want it to) and does not need a flight plan. You can learn more about the additional requirements of Part 135 in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), Part 135: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=98834b649fdc4b38229d0eda8e934578&mc=true&node=pt14.3.135&rgn=div5 Obviously, other FARs also apply to all of my flights.
What is the weight limit for passengers.
Per seat limit is legally 300 lbs, but I prefer to fly passengers under 275 lbs each. Total pax depends on fuel aboard; I use 600 lbs as a rule of thumb.
Maria - what are your restrictions for overhaul? If it's not date restricted time-wise, can we help with donations to help fly up your 117 and get inspected sooner to keep flying this year?
The helicopter will be going in for its second overhaul. That's at 4400 hours or 12 years from the last overhaul, whichever comes first. The 12 years ends in 2025, so I have plenty of calendar time. It's the 4400 hour clock that I'm running up against. I expect the overhaul to cost about $250,000 so unless I can get about $2500/hour for my next 100 hours, I'm not going to be able to raise that money anytime soon. The good news is, when the helicopter comes back it'll be in like new condition and good for another 12 years or 2200 hours.
Thumbs down are probably Bots that need to balance out the thumbs ups that they sell by dumping thumbs down on new random videos.
Interesting theory. I didn't even realize buying Thumbs Up was a thing.
Could you comfortably fly in your helicopter without ear protection, or is it too noisy and could damage your hearing?
Too noisy for any length of time.
You may be able to fly in tighter quarters with a helicopter, but you can’t fly as far
I can get about 300 miles (depending on wind) on full tanks of gas.
THEY SAY BOAT IS A ACRONYM FOR "BRING ON ANOTHER THOUSAND". WHAT WOULD THAT BE IN HELI SPEAK? HOPE TO GET UP THERE SOMETIME FOR A CHARTER AS NEVER HAVE BEEN IN A HELICOPTER. ENJOY THE KEEPIN' IT REAL NARRITIVE AND "NICK ABOVE THE ROCKS" SERIES. UNTIL THE NEXT ONE.
More Nick OVER the Rocks is coming. You should definitely treat yourself to a helicopter flight -- or, better yet, an intro flight where you can actually manipulate the controls. All fight schools offer them; I'll be doing a video about intro flights soon.
@@FlyingMAir THANKS FOR THE INFO GET A KICK OUT OF NICK AND HIS COMMENTARY ON ROCKS. INTRO FLIGHT SOUNDS GREAT, LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THAT VIDEO. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
Are there many female helicopter pilots in the Wenatchee area?
I was told that there was one flying the helicopter for the hospital, but I'm not sure how true that is. Year-round, there are only 4 helicopters operating here: mine, my friend Tyson's (a company helicopter), my friend Rich's (another R44), and the hospital's AStar (I think). The fire helicopters are all gone now, but we had at least 6 at one time.
@@FlyingMAir Cool!
Dont worry about the thumbs down crowd. They are just jealous haters.
Haters gotta hate. Lol.
love you to death but would you please tighten up that compass in the middle of the bubble above the camera??
Nope. It's supposed to move. Balancing the blades will improve the situation, but the helicopter goes in for overhaul this time next year and I honestly don't want to spend ANY money on it that I don't have to. Unless you can help me raise $250K in a year...?
FlyingMAir Hi Maria, that answered a question I had for over 10 years and never asked! Being a dentist I like things to be strait, plumb and square and definitely not loose. And now you tell me, I could not have an inspired aircraft mechanic „fix“ that wobbling compass becaus it is a poor man‘s gimbal intended to keep the worst shocks away from the instrument. Now I‘m verklemmt, if I would ever buy a R44 I would have to endure the extreme stress of looking at that ready to fall off compass! 😉 Again: I enjoy every minute flying with you on my 65“ TV. You are making a great job, really appreciate it! Greetings from Mallorca.
Maria. I'm not sure if this is the video where you mention clamping a camera on something between the seats. Manfrotto makes premium grade highly usable camera equipment/clamps and mounts. Here is one called the Magic Arm that is highly adjustable and with other pieces, you could mount a camera almost anywhere. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/553825-REG/Manfrotto_244_244_Variable_Friction_Magic.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514&gclid=CjwKCAjwxt_tBRAXEiwAENY8hVyaLafih_YbSqNTypbCQ2t5pmWwD5QO7fhUEoOiIZcbSBqX95I8lBoCTLMQAvD_BwE
