  • October of 2021 will be the last open book paper-based civil PE exam given. In 2022 the civil PE exam will flip the switch and go completely computer-based or CBT with only the codes and the new PE Reference Handbook at your disposal. Watch as I cover some of the details of the CBT exam including price, format, and more.
    The nice part is that the specs didn't change (codes were updated) so the same categories and topics are there.

    What do you think about the exam going CBT? Good or bad?

    Love the 1 reference! No more purchasing or copying books that we may or may not need to use during the exam. This is exciting.

    CBT increases my cheesing potential tenfold! I barely studied for the FE, but I passed because I could CTRL+F a PDF for formulas. I don't think I can get away with as little studying as I did with the FE, but a searchable document makes my life a whole lot easier.

    You also get the references at the end of your depth section. So it’s the NCEES Reference Manual + All of the references at the end of the Chosen Depth Section

    New Jersey resident - took the Water Resources exam in October 2021, as every other state has received results, I await my fate, haha. In anticipation of having failed (afternoon really got me), here getting my mind back into it. Best of luck to you all, based on the way I perform on exams, I actually think I would prefer this CBT. I got stuck on the exam and had too many references which overwhelmed me during some more challenging questions.

    I'm wondering how skipping a question and coming back to it later works with a CBT, if it has a dashboard of unanswered questions or if you just need to remember or if you can't even go back, which would be pretty bad.

    Thank you for clafifying our doubts. You mentioned in your video a free PDF NCEES PE handbook. Is the handbook the same book that NCEES sells as a Practice Exam (for 2022 CBT exams) or is another book? Thank you.

      You can get a free PDF copy of the reference book from NCEES by logging into your account with them and downloading it. The exams and such are extra. Let me know if that makes sense.

    Question; how many times is allowed to take the CBT exam during the year? Suppose not pass first or send exam, can do like 5 times per year, is their a limit ?

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety +1

      You can take the exam three times in a 12 month period. One time per given quarter.

    Is this round the year, exactly like EIT? Can I take it any time of the year or April and October? How many times I can sit for the exam in a year?

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, it's like the FE/EIT now. You can take it year round once per quarter up to 3 times in a 12 month period (check your state's DOPL for your repeat requirements). Go get it.

    I have question, do we need the use the codes in depth, but they give them to us as electronic copy, would mind to clarify that plz?

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety +1

      You'll need to practice problems with the codes you need per your depth exam, so you'll probably use a physical copy for that. Come time for the exam though you'll only have pdf versions as you can't take any references in with you. Make sense?

    With that said, in another one of your videos, I think I may recall that they can ask depth questions during the “AM” section based on what depth you are taking, am I correct?
    One thing I liked about the FE being CBT was that they were only able to ask me questions in regards to where I could find the answer in the handbook. I.e. since they don’t have the flow Nets in the new fe handbook, they weren’t able to ask questions in regards to it since they did t include in their handbook, or what I’ve seen/been told by recent people who have taken the exam.
    Would you happen to know if that will be the same as the PE? Regardless I know it depends on your depth, for example, if you are taking water resources, they can’t ask you an ACI question or certain number of rebar for an item if an interaction diagram is not given, but for Structural depth, that is all game as the ACI 318 is provided.
    So do you know if they will be “limited” to what questions they can ask since they are using their own reference handbook?

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety

      Yes, they can mix and match things any way they want now. I don't think they'll veer off what's in the specifications as to the problems. Stick with the spec and you'll be ok.

  • @jhernandez418

    Do they give you pencil and paper to workout stuff? I wish they'd allow at least one reference like the CERM.

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety

      They'll give you a small pad to work things or a dry erase. You'll have the new handbook and your codes and that's all. The CERM is good and still a good tool to study from so consider getting a copy. Use our link at civilengineeringacademy.com/ppi for a discount.

      @@CivilEngAcademy what are the best CBT practice exams? I see NCEES has a revised one with the same Qs as the last with a few new Qs for CBT style answers.

      @@CivilEngAcademy I found that the PE reference they provide is woefully inadequate for the test. They also stated they would provided all other necessary equations in the test,: 100% not true. They expect much of the morning general civil items be memorized or remembered (though your everyday practice). This is detrimental to certain practicians for example Structural engineers probably never practice transportation, land development(water flow, piping) etc. People who work with NCEES and Test prep need to really refocus on how they allow external reference mateerial in. They are super unresponsive and combative in this feedback.

      Based on the sample test I got when I signed up, the questions had multiple keywords ("the darcy roughness is X") you could search for in the PDF's to quickly find the right tables and equation. I haven't taken it yet, but I assume the searchable PDF will help substantially when finding these one-off questions that I may have never worked before.
      Have you taken the exam? I'm wondering how skipping questions and coming back works with a CBT setup.

    What are the actual dates for Continuous CBT?

    • @CivilEngAcademy
      @CivilEngAcademy  Před 2 lety +1

      The NCEES has the civil PE going full CBT in January of 2022. It'll be continuously that from then on out. I hope that answers what you're asking.
