  • As the United States contemplates providing further aid to Ukraine and also considers further sanctions against Russia, it should consider the surprisingly robust state of the Russian economy and what effect it has on Russia’s ability to maintain its war against its neighbor to the west, says Morning Joe economic analyst Steve Rattner.

Russia has made more enemies and their top partners have largely remained neutral. Their main support is coming from Iran and NK. Meanwhile, Putin commits atrocities against Russian soldiers in Ukraine, and against Russian civilians at home. The sooner Ukraine wins and Putin is deposed, the better it is for Russia.

Think about it. There was no Zelensky back then. Ukraine was way more corrupt and closer to Russia. Why would we guarantee we'd give them security to Ukraine which was part of a former enemy, the Soviet Union? US President Barack Obama said in 2015 that thanks to the US, the Russian economy was “torn to shreds.” Apparently because of this, Russia has turned from the sixth economy in the world, taking into account PPP, into the fourth, according to the World Bank.
Russia has overtaken the United States, the EU and even China in terms of economic growth.
At the end of the first quarter of 2024, Russia's GDP grew by an incredible 5.4%. For comparison, the US economy grew by 1.6%, the European Union is hanging around 0%, and even China showed only +5.3%.
Skeptics are trying to prove that this growth is associated only with an increase in arms production. In fact, retail trade turnover increased by 10.5%, paid services to the population increased by 5.4%, and construction by 3.5%. Unemployment dropped to 2.7%, real wages increased by 10.8%. All figures are given after subtracting inflation.
But after the announcement of sanctions, someone seriously expected the collapse of the Russian economy and almost mass famine in the country...
The Central Bank's business climate indicator rose to 13.2 points in May. This is the best May since 2013 and the second best May since 2008 (in 16 years).

    4:31 - Yeah, what he fails to hone in on is that the fact who is paying for that;
A - You pay taxes, that the government then spends on whatever else (military, infrastructure, medical, etc)
B - Now they want to use that taxpayer money (and really all money the government has is that, minus obviously nationalized industries and government owned entities, etc) to replace older equipment US military equipment that is being sent to Ukraine (and actually, even newer equipment now).
C - And finally the argument is that these industries will now create jobs. So, in a sense you are going to see your own taxpayer money again or money from your own government (I mean really what he says around 2:16 is helping the Russian economy). The US is paying for this.
The big caveat here is that in WW2 for example, this war really good for the US economy (because Britain was actually paying for it, ie capital inflow), this time round the US and US citizens are paying for this (and yes, the cycling of money within the US economy will create jobs), but Ukraine can't pay for this. This is charity and it is being given away to be fired on some field somewhere.
Normally if it was spent on infrastructure or medical, the US citizens would've had their livelihood improved (ironically the same argument I'm making now was made against Russia a while back, when defense spending was increased in Russia; "Yeah, it's helping Russians with work, but their livelihood aren't being improved." etc, but now because we're talking Western industry, and suddenly the calculus changes yet again. 1 + 1 should always be 2, not sometimes 3 because it suits the narrative.)

I'm not comfortable with you saying the Indian people are "at ease" with Ukrainian people dying rather than not buying oil from Russia. Our governments are ignoring global warming and continuing to support the fossil fuels industries. Consequently, societies like India's have to buy crude oil. Having about 1/2 the GDP per capital as their primary Asian opponent, China, they have to reduce national costs by buying crude oil from the cheapest supplier. As a retired engineer (Canadian) from the energy field, I faxed 8 federal government departments and 7 Provincial department, 20 years ago, outlining how to mitigate global warming and they have done next to nothing to address the problem. And my solution would indeed work. My view today is that our elected officials are corrupt due to the money available from the fossil fuels industry since it is the largest business revenue wise, in the world.

I remember when Saudi Arabia refused to support the West in oil prices to hurt Russia, an American official said, "We overlooked the slaughter of an American resident journalist, we overlooked their war in Yemen, we overlooked the massive human rights abuses in their country, because we believed when push came to shove, they'd support us over Russia. How dare they?"
Every country looks out for its own interest and what it can get from other countries. India works with Russia, the US works with the Saudis. If anything, it's hard to say Indians are at ease with Ukrainian people dying because...India is not involved in the war, they are just buying oil from a country. We try to play these morality games, but the world is not involved in the Ukraine war, only the West. And looking at what's happening in Gaza and the pitiful American response and abuse of its veto, it's pretty clear most of the world is not interested in helping the US or Russia. Both countries flaunt the international rules when they don't serve them and then complain and play the morality game when other countries do so. For a country like India, it's best to ignore both the US and Russia, just do your own thing and let the big powers figure it out. No good can come of taking a side.

Oil is also currently the best source of energy in terms of energy used vs. energy gained. That's why everything will eventually pivot back to oil. "Green" energy production is not sustainable. @@CellGames2006 Also I should add, the CIA has already predicted if we don't stop global warming, it's will become a national security risk. The conditions of global warming will drive competition, flair up nationalistic, ethnic and geopoltical tensions, violence, and wars as people compete for dwindling resources. And usually when people are in conflict, the last thing anyone is concerned about is the reasons that caused the conflict in the first place, their only goal is proving the other side wrong and winning. So by that point, no one will be concerned with solving global warming, just engaging in warfare that will make global warming worse and reduce resources even further.

2nd: The stock market was not allowed to fall deeper, because foreigners were not allowed to sell their stock. There were massive capital controls
    - The Russian stock market is un-investable
3rd: Russia produces less oil and gas and America can take their market share.
    - keep in mind selling oil and gas next-door is much easier and cheaper than sending it on long boat trips to India and back.
4th: The sanctions absolutely have an impact on the Russian economy, some are short term, but most are long term.
    - un-investable economy
    - no more global corporate cooperation (Maersk, Airbus, Boeing, Ikea, Mastercard...)
    - they stole 10 billion worth of airplanes (which will last them maybe 10 year, but after that they can "fly" into serious quality problems)
    - and so much more...
5th: The leaders say: "we don't need them, we will make it ourselves"
    - This is a mistake that many other leaders have made before. It never works out, just ask the people of these nations where they tried it. (like Iran, Argentina, Venezuela, NK....)

Coming back to the oil revenue as shown, those are raw exports, and gross. In Russia's own financial reporting, net income is ca. 60% down in us$. Where does this discrepancy comes from? From Russia losing its most profitable fossils: pipeline natural gas and oil products, not raw. Pipeline gas is obvious with Europe going largely offline. Oil products? that's where India and China come in, they have massive refineries for themselves and use the discounted raw oil from Russia to refine oil products themselves, and subsequently sell it on the market. This is where the real money makers are from fossils. So letting India take the refined products Russia loses out on a lot of profits. So that gross income has never been as far away from net oil income. Source: the Russian government/bank of Russia.
So why don't they have a crashed economy? They invest massive amounts of their welfare funds (build up over decennia) into the war-time economy. The total collapse of their oil income has been fully compensated, and passed by non-oil income. This also from the same source.
