Runaway it takes a lot of it and you need to make sure the strings are tuned by using a tuner you can find online, am electric one will work I think it's called snark or something and you clamp it on and pluck the strings until the meter is in the middle, at least that's what i did.

Your bow needs Rosin to play sound. The Rosin at first is solid so score it using sandpaper or a nail file. Then, just swipe the rosin up and down, making sure to reach the bottom and top. Put enough but not too much or else you will have fall out and other stuff. She puts her's on every week usually. Put yours as needed and kind of see what works for you. Never touch the bow with your hands, or else it can stop rosin from going on properly.

But that's why God invented mutes! Some years ago, a friend gave me a King (school quality, with one season's use) trombone, and another friend gave me a good beginner's book. After a week or so, I learned the 11 positions, and 3 modified positions, and could play a Bb Maj scale, but I noticed that whenever I practiced every living creature (dogs, cats, humans) would vacate the floor I was on until it was back in its case. If only I had had a good mute back then I might now be a member of the community orchestra or band, instead of a hack string player.
For the last 20 years I have practiced my electric guitars unplugged, and with a rubber (slightly quiet) or Artino (heavy metal, quieter) MUTE on my fiddle bridges, so that I can practice any time without the threatened homicide of my housemates.
A violinist friend once suggested that Beethoven was made deaf by his violin. In consideration of my hearing loss from engine rooms & machine shops (not to mention too much closeness to the wind section or hanging out in pipe organ chambers), I ALWAYS use at least SOME mute OR an earplug in my left ear, and if I played in a combo, I would wear earwig monitors on stage and accoustablock studio headphones always.

I made the mistake of putting too much rosin on my new bow for the first time. I drew my bow across the strings and it looked like my bow was trying to burst into flames. A cloud of rosin dust rose up and I caught a lung full of it. I started hacking and coughing. Being asthmatic, that was NO fun. Anyway, lesson learned: Don't over rosin the bow. It makes for an interesting visual effect, but don't recommend doing that.

I hear warnings, "Don't move the rosin too fast!" Because if you heat it up too much it can be fatal.
Today I rehaired my bow and it was the worst Sunday since months ago. So, now I'm relieved to have learned, it takes hours to warm up new hair. After rehairing my bow I expect it to work better, because--as people say--old bowhair is no good, so new hair must be better. Well, what can I say : I was sooo frustrated. My bow vibrato goes "krrrk, krrrk, krrrk", a couple minutes later all rosin is gone and the strings hardly respond. I really thought, I'm too stupid to make progress on the violin and now just fall back. For a moment I even thought about giving up playing the violin.
That's why I went online, where I learned : the goodness of having fresh bow hair emerges after playing and roseing and playing and rosening..... for several hours.
Rehairing is worse than going to the dentist! Let's not talk about the rehairing process, because it's the worst. I only use about 40 hairs, but taming 40 hairs is kind of a calamity. They constantly try to do what they want and rather not what I want!
There should be special therapists for all those mentally tortured violin players. There's so much insidiousness in this lovely instrument.

***** Get on with life? This is my life and intense is always great! If you think about picking up the violin, you have to be aware, it's a really difficult instrument and going to be a long-long waiting game. It's not an instrument for quitters. If you're persistent, you will profit and finally enjoy playing.
What I was reporting above, is experimenting with tricky things. It's always worth doing that and I love it. Finally I profit from it.

The violins were both in poor condition needing new tailpieces, new strings, new bridges, new sound posts, and new bow strings. He asked me if I would be interested in getting his violins in playing condition (trading my labor for a full sleeve tattoo). Of course I am not turning down a tatto; as he is one of the best in the US. I am trolling CZcams Channels for information. +Chelsea Pierce After rosining I always hit the side of the bow stick on the table a couple times, so the rosin which is too much falls of.

Thank you so much! I've just received my first violin as a birthday gift and the rosin just was not depositing onto the bow. Using a nail file on the rosin made a huge difference and I never would have thought of that!

I'm 62, and having studied through the 1969's and 1970's, I never heard a professional or teacher suggest scratching rosin to get the hair to take rosin. That is, until some morons got the idea to make bow hair out of fiberglass. The fiberglass would not readily accept rosin, and so the morons suggested scratching the rosin to get the artificial hair to take the rosin. Didn't work, and so finally, they stopped making fiberglass hair because ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WANTED IT, even for the cheapest student bows. Yet this practice of scratching persists today. I rehair bows, and I have never had a bow that would not take rosin. Arnold Bone (my rehair teacher) said that only once in his career did he get a pound of hair that just would not take rosin, so it is quite rare that good horsehair will not take rosin. The trick is to overlap raw, unrosined hair with rosined hair as you rosin a fresh bow; the rosined hair, being rougher, will 'freshen' (rough up) the surface of the cake of rosin so that the raw hair will take rosin as well, and then just keep overlapping the rosined section with the unrosined section as you rosin a raw bow. And rotate your rosin. Don't dig a groove in it; you'll wind up scratching and ruining the wood of your bow.

+james mothersbaugh Some good advice here James. Nevertheless, a lot of talented players give their rosin a start these days. Coincidentally, I recently purchased a new Mongolian horsehair carbon bow plus some new Gustave Bernadel rosin. Unless I wanted to be rubbing away for ages, the rosin needed a little bit of gentle encouragement!!

The rosin I bought on ebay was as slick as pig snot and hard as a mother in-laws heart you I could try to rosin my bow for an hour and get nothing just a little sandpaper 100 grit and in just a short time the bow was covered.

Yes I do talk a lot, but in my defence, this is now 6 years old and was one of the first videos I released on my channel. I was very poor at editing with no skills or equipment and I didnt think this channel would make it past Christmas 2012! Roll on a few years later and my videos are much better. I will be re-making some of these older videos to make them better, more informative and slicker! Stay tuned :)

When getting a new instrument my biggest fear is not that I maybe never get past beginners skill level but the fear or ruining the instrument, luckily you had a video where you reminded to untighten the bow too. So thanks for your videos.

What a helpful video! In grade school through high school orchestra we rosined our bows for the first few minutes of class before tuneup, it was just the practice. Everyone was probably very over rosined. It was maybe only 40 to 100 minutes of playing a day if you didn't practice at home.
