  • These are the need to know dental insurance terms for claims, EOB, Pre Determinations for the person responsible for billing insurance at your dental office.
As soon as you receive a new patient’s insurance information, verify their benefits. This can be done by phone, or online. Each office has their own specifications as to what they are looking to verify. Minimally, you want to make sure you know the basic coverage and that their insurance will pay if they come to your office. I would suggest that you have a benefit breakdown form to follow along with and fill in all the information you need as you go. There is a template available in the Resources section of our site that you can use or adapt to work for your office.
I would not wait until the day of the appointment to do this if you can avoid it. Try to get the benefits verified at least 48 hours in advance so that when you make the confirmation calls you are confident that their insurance will work in your office. If there were any issues that arose during verification, you will then be able to discuss them with the patient during your call and prior to their treatment.
Current Patients: I suggest that anytime a patient tells you that their insurance has changed, collect all their new information and call to get their benefits verified so you are ready for their next visit.

Exactly. Thank you for the great review. We are so glad to invest a bit more time on the front end to avoid lots of work chasing claims on the back end. This is great.

It’s been over 4 months since I’ve worked as an assistant in the dental field. I also only ever done chair side assisting lol so this was really helpful to me since tomorrow is my work interview for the treatment coordinator position. Wish me luck. 😅

I'm going to save this and watch later, thank you! This looks extremely helpful. I was a dental assistant back in the late 70's (I know, I'm ancient!) for about 10 years. I've done a lot of different jobs since, my career path has been mostly Executive Assistant/Administrative Assistant/Receptionist. I MISS dentistry! I was so lucky when I started that my boss hired me and trained me OJT. I soon became first assistant with expanded duties. The downside is I never got any type of formal training or certification. I am 64 years YOUNG and want to work for several more years. I'm very social and love being around people so retiring isn't really an option for me. What are my chances of being hired for the front office? Should I get certified in anything? I can't go back to school full time, I thought maybe I could take some online courses? Any straight forward advice would really be appreciated. Thanks again for posting this...can't wait to go home and watch!
