I might be able to help on this - Limit switches is a different topic than direction control. These kind of drivers can normally be controlled directly from logic high / low (5v/0v) or interfaced to higher control voltages using resistors. See this video: czcams.com/video/zkE7xNMAGa8/video.html. STEP / DIR / EN signals can run between 5 and 24V. Basically if you set the dir control pin HIGH it will turn one way, if you set it LOW it will turn the other. The button on this controller here is doing that, but it could be done from another circuit / switches too..
