Lye is completely natural. It occurs naturally and doesn't require human intervention. Lye is nothing more than water that has passed through hardwood ashes. It's not a standard strength therefore we do regulate the strength but lye happens people. Lye just happens. We can use that natural process and make it whenever we want but it is just water that has run through hardwood ashes. Oldtime soapmakers made their own lye so it's traditional too.
Isn't lye or soda ash the only reason we really have soap to begin with, discounting very regional things like soap berries? I thought the Babylonians accidentally dripped animal fats into wood ashes from their cooking fires, and it soaponified, and then they realized it made things easier to clean.

@@erin9868 Even people saponify >.> because fats do that in certain conditions. There are relatively few chemicals which aren't naturally occurring. Lye is natural and people seem afraid of it. Teflon isn't and I doubt the lye-haters refuse to use a new non-stick pan every year.

People have also used lye for for preservation for a few thousand year. As a Norwegian, I'll just whisper lutefisk
"Lye is unnatural"? Who's saying this? You can extract it from wood ash. That's how soap used to be made-- with ash and lard. It's not pleasant, but it's effective.
I believe she means the lye used by most soap makers today. :) It's probably not naturally-sourced.
She talked about this in the past it has to do with not being naturally occurring and has to be manufactured.

I actually think that the ashing added a bit to the soap. It kind of looked frosted, which works with the theme of the bar.
I adore that swirl just how you did it. I'd really love it with a white and navy bar.
I'm a microbiologist and all I can think of is how awesome spirulina looks when viewed under a microscope. Now THAT would be a fun soap design to attempt.

i really love the look of this bar, even the ashing on top makes it look a little more festive, even if it's technically considered "not good." Even the swirl is nice, its lazy and easygoing, not too busy and theres lots of colour mixed with the nice plain soap. the pomegranate flowers on top with the berries looks so nice too :D

Have you ever considered doing some of the slab molds as a smaller/mini cut for the bars of soap? Maybe sets of 3 one inch square soap bars (the equivalent of a single large bar). That way a single bar of soap can make 3 really great little stocking stuffers.

I actually just bought my first bar from her for myself, and sliced it up into 5 chunks to ration out use. Was very enjoyable, and it's much easier to use a small little block for washing up : )

I actually love how the swirl came out.
When my daughter was four years old, she woke up Christmas morning with the stomach flu! I have never been more sad I think in my life. I had created a humongous dollhouse that I had worked on for months and she didn’t even want to look at it, my poor baby, she was so sick. We just put Christmas off to the next day end it just extended our holiday and thank goodness no one else caught it. Kids really do make Christmas!

My family is gone, and I currently live in a city without any of my friends, so my holiday plans are cooking bird bread for my four parrots and eating junk food. I know that sounds sad, and weird, but it’s kinda nice to have no stress or travel or expensive gifts to deal with.

This soap sounds like it will smell amazing! I agree with you about the swirl, but I hope you will texture the top the same way- with the indent down the middle of each bar instead of just the sides. It created a cute little bed for the botanicals to lay in!

My friend turned me onto your videos, and I'm so glad she did. Watching them is so soothing, and I actually want to pick up soap making myself now. I can only do melt and pour due to being disabled and unable to handle the lye safely, but you have given so much inspiration it's unbelieavable.

About 5 years ago our family all started talking about how none of us really like turkey so now we have steak on the grill and a Chick Fil A tray. It’s awesome.
Yeah my family just makes ham, we don't like turkey. Haha steak, that's funny. It works though, it's whatever you'll actually eat lol. Plus the traditions are fun, even if your traditions are different from other people's. : )

I just have to point out that lye is a natural solution. If you want to make your lye yourself, it is actually quite easy! It's the strength of the solution that can be hard to achieve, but you can measure with a pH-meter, or pH-sticks. Your own, 100% natural lye solution can be made by mixing ash with water! I don't have the quantities you need at hand, but you simply take a heap of wood ash and soak it in some water over some time, et voila, you got your very own, home made lye solution!
And remember, just because something is labeled "natural", doesn't mean it's automatically good for you... Arsenic is also natural!
It reminds me of early 20th century marble pieces in art deco houses. It's honestly quite handsome, and it sounds like it must smell crisp and wintery and perfect for right now~

Regarding the holiday feast, one of my friend's family does a junk food buffet for Christmas. People just graze throughout the day. It's easier and the kids love it.
I love this soap. It's in my bathtub right now. It smells really nice, reminds me of spice drops, and the green and cream colors go so nicely together. It's been my favorite so far of all the soaps I've ordered.

Lye can come from natural ingredients. Soaps were made before there were labs to make the NaOH. And the chemical reaction used to make and manufacture NaOH could hypothetically occur in nature. AND micas and oxides also occur in nature. I could say only the synthetic fragrance is the unnatural ingredient.

Mum got fed up of Xmas dinner one year after 8 work or friend group parties before Dec15th. So on Xmas Eve, she ordered an Indian takeaway for collection just before Midnight closing, and we got given free samosas someone ordered and didn't show up to collect. Shoved it in the fridge immediately, and just reheated all the foil containers in the oven on Xmas Day, and it was actually fun to have the difference.
Orange Clove is my FAVORITE Holiday scent!!!!! It’s the one thing that to me, it’s not Christmas until I’ve started burning an orange clove candle or melted wax, or made my orange clove soap! I don’t make soap on a large scale, or sell them yet, but I LOVE giving them as presents around the holidays. This was the first Christmas in a few years that I couldn’t afford to get everything I needed, so no soap this time.... everyone was mad at me 😂😂😂 I guess I should be flattered that my relatives were looking forward to it!!!

My dad is coming to visit me & my girlfriend for Thanksgiving. We have a 20lb turkey, and tons of materials for cakes & pies! I love cooking and I always used to cook with my dad so it'll be nice to be in the kitchen with him again.

I loved the evergreen soap you made last year. I've hoarded it because it is so wonderful. Each big bar gets cut into 8ths and I got lucky and got 4 sample bars. I'm making it last as long as I can.

I never knew how hard soap was to make (the process) until I actually did some myself a few days ago. First try had lots of oil left sitting on top (the blue wasn't mixed fully I'm guessing). Second try was actually way better, just took about 36 hours to fully sit. I just finished my 3rd try. Wish me luck, 3rd time's a charm, right?

Ahhhh I'm sooo excited. I've been watching your videos. Studying the Royal Creative Academy playlist. I finally ordered all my soaping tools and have them. Just waiting on the castor and coconut oil before i can start soaping! They are supposed to be here tomorrow. I love that green! For my 1st soap I wanted to attempt a layered soap. A green like that but I'm using nettle powder. And then a layer of the swirl between uncolored, nettle green, and black from activated charcoal. With the top layer being just a layer of the activated charcoal. Still debating on what I'm sprinkling on the top. I know I'm being a bit ambitious lol bit I'm going for it! Fingers crossed it turns out lol

Hi Katie! Regarding Rakuten: It is not available in Europe. Also, I was curious as to where the money comes from, so I found out: They get paid by the companies for "sending you" to their page. They then share the money with their customers (aka you). They write, that the company generally pays for the click, that sends you to their page, and in this case, part of that payment ends back with you. I thought that was nice to know!
