  • Matt Rife is facing backlash. The comedian, who rose to fame on TikTok, sparked controversy by telling a joke about domestic violence in his new Netflix special "Natural Selection." Amid the controversy, Rife took to his Instagram Stories to issue a fake apology. "If you've ever been offended by a joke I've told, here's a link to my official apology. Tap to solve the issue," he shared. The link that the Rife included takes followers to a website selling products described as "special needs helmets" for children and adults. Access Hollywood has reached out for comment.

@@Bones-od3rg So your argument is: "There are people that don't understand that jokes are fictitious, and so we can't tell any jokes that if taken as not fictitious would be harmful"
With that same logic you could argue that fictitious tv shows, movies, music, and any other form of fiction that in any way depicts a harmful behavior should not be allowed. You are arguing that, because there are a small minority of individuals that are either too dumb, or too immature to understand something, the rest of us mature, well adjusted adults shouldn't be allowed to do it.
The same argument could be used to ban almost anything from cleaning chemicals to firearms, on the basis that because there exists some dumbass out there that will drink the cleaning chemicals, the rest of us can't have it.
It's a completely ridiculous argument, because if it were universally applied, the only thing we could really do would be to sit in a padded room all day humming and twiddling our thumbs, because almost any behavior can be harmful under the right circumstances. Hell, you could walk out your front door, trip and fall and break your neck on the steps. Should we outlaw steps?

9 out of 10 times I'm going to side with the comedian in these instances, but I don't think "being a comedian" gives you the right to say whatever you want and not have any blowback. The vast majority of the population can tell when something is in good faith or not, and that's why they don't get "cancelled". However, there are instances (Michael Richards who played Kramer comes to mind) when people can tell that came from a place of hate, and then we don't see much of that person anymore
