Totally agree, they dragged it out way too long. Especially considering how quickly Raps forgives her in the end...
I also feel like her choice to betray Raps would've been more understandable if she was maybe treated more poorly as a lady in waiting-- like she's totally unable to become a guard because of either sexism or because her dad doesn't want it to seem like nepotism by giving her the position. So Cass is bitter at being forced to supports Raps' path and is jealous that Raps got this wonderful life handed to her on a silver platter. Instead, the show made her be like "I hate you because my mom decided to kidnap you and abuse you for 18 years!!!" ??????

While I totally understood the complex motive of Cassandra's betrayal (and no, it's not entirely about Mother Gothel), but Cassandra being evil has been dragged for too long, yes. And Season 3's filler episodes just made it worse.
I would have preferred it if Cassandra's Revenge happened somewhat earlier, and then later Cassandra's episode where she seeks Rapunzel again for forgiveness happened sooner. The series finale would have been about defeating Zhan Tiri alone, unmasked and on the Corona throne, with the trio teaming up with Corona like old times during the eclipse. Except, not all of Cassandra's burdens are fully resolved until the climax of this finale.

About the whole evil Cass thing, heres the thing. King Edmund says "It can get into your head, fill it with thoughts. It's what it's doing to your friend, it's what it did to me, and I nearly destroyed my whole kingdom." So while Cass wasn't being inherently mind controlled, she was slowly but surely being corrupted by the stone. With each wrong and bad decision and choice building upon the first one of taking the moonstone to betray Rapunzel. As Varian put it "With each passing day you're further astray from the light." Then at end when the moon stone is pulled out of her, nows when she reconciles with everything she's done and sees the error of her ways.

I’ve got to say, I think while it makes at least some sense that Raps had to break her promise to Varian in ‘Queen For A Day’ the amount of filler episodes between that and the next time she talks to Varian is INSANE. Seriously, once the situation was resolved, and she was settled back in and living happily again, she should’ve checked in him, seeing his distress during the blizzard. She also shouldn’t have let him be kicked out of the castle bc it was still a literal blizzard and even if she couldn’t help his dad they didn’t need to leave him to die in the cold- I really wasn’t sure how to feel about her character in the series tbh- I think that’s definitely another reason Varian’s betrayal made so much more sense than Cass’s: Raps wasn’t a very good friend to Varian, but she was a great friend to Cass.

      Totally agree.
I wish there would have been a few less filler Episodes and a few more with Varian, like finding out more about him. Am not a storywriter so don't ask how they should have done it.
But yes, I felt like that was probably a reason why Varian in the end chose his path. I mean the princess being on some crazy adventures would have definetly being talked about. While Varian is home trying to help his father and hoping Rapunzel comes to help him.
You know what forget what I said I know what they should have included with Varian. Him searching for some materials for an Experiment to save his father, only to see Rapunzel having fun and enjoying her happily ever after.
Maybe even including her meeting him and her just saying _„Hi Varian, sorry what happened. I am on my way to have an adventure with my mom, do you wonna come with us, it is going to be fun!“_
If we want to play into the whole naive girl thing... Also I mean he is 14(?), even if she tried to help him after the Episode he would have still seen it as betrayal. At this age your emotions often overplay your logical thinking.

In season 1 in particular the writers set out to make you hate him by making him lean really hard into his villain role and made him do some really awful things to menace Rapunzel. And this was on purpose because the show runner admitted that Varian's character was a late addition to the story and was just a plot device to challenge Rapunzel and they had every intention of making Varian hated by the fan base. I personally love his character and this is from someone who was skeptical of him at first. But you are not alone I have seen fans hate on his character and find his actions as a villain unforgivable. Or the very least just not as taken by his character as others are. Before I got into the series officially and I was still just feeling it out, I was some what put off by how hard fans sweat over Varian and wondered what all the hype was about. I eventually came to like/love him and felt he got the shaft by the writing crew and that annoyed me, but if you dislike him, either out of annoyance over how the fans sweat him, or because he is just annoying to you it is because the writers went out of their way to make him awful to fit the narrative purpose he was assigned to. Because I eventually came to really like Varian, I disliked the role he was given to play because they intended for him to act in way to he hated

There was a disproportionately large focus on his vanity and a seeming reluctance to embrace him as more than comic relief except when necessary to support Rapunzel, which is a damn shame because they had an INCREDIBLE story there about him having a kind of identity crisis. “Everything I Ever Thought I Knew” should have been the beginning of an incredibly compelling arc for him but the twist of his heritage barely mattered. Spoilers and Character Analysis Below:
I am so happy you liked this series and I agree with a lot of this video but I can’t believe you didn’t touch on the music!!! I think it’s one of the series most enticing elements.
    Spoilers:
Also, I don’t really understand your interpretation of Cassandra. As I understood her, she always wanted more in her life and eventually decided to give up on her dreams for Rapunzel. She constantly felt overshadowed by Rapunzel as showed in Ep. 4 Season 1 Challenge of the Brave. Again at the end Cassandra is forced in Rapunzel’s shadow and they don’t really make up. Rapunzel’s thinks its fine but Cass isn’t content. Then in Season 2 Rapunzel completely disregards Cass and her input which often leads to them getting in trouble. The weird bird episode shows this. Cass is desperate to help Rapunzel because she has a destiny and it will make her feel useful and like her choice to stay in Corona and be friends with Raps wasn’t a waste of her potential. She points that Raps wasn’t taking the mission seriously. The two make up but only because Rapunzel was almost permanently turned into a bird. Then in the Great Tree episodes Cass sings her song about feeling unimportant, undervalued, and overlooked, thinking she as much more potential but her choice to stay with Rapunzel spoiled it. This is why I believe she gets pushed to the breaking point when she finds out her mother even choose Rapunzel over her, leading to her actions in the Season 2 finale and Season 3. She was so desperate to be in the spotlight that the only way she could get it was to listen to Zhan Tiri when she told her she has a purpose. People only listened to Varian when he started being a threat, she followed the same logic: “Now you care about what I think? It only took threatening the things you love the most” - Varian. Cass looses her morals in a desperate attempt to be needed by Zhan Tiri. Because she never felt content with Rapunzel she quickly took a liking to the endearing blue ghost who gave her answers and a purpose.
I do agree that Cassandra’s villain arc was worse than Varians because it was dragged out to long and wasn’t super deep, but from my interpretation it does make sense for Cassandra to lashed out to attempt to get what she feels she deserved.
Also the reason I believe Cassandra left is because she did just destroy the kingdom… and because she wanted to find her calling- not just go back to being unfulfilled in the castle with Rapunzel

    • @AuraKumo104
      @AuraKumo104 Před 2 lety +29

It was foreshadowed that she would betray them and you could tell that she didn't trust Rapunzel but that doesn't mean Cassandra's betrayal makes any logical sense or was justified in anyway whatsoever, unlike when Varian turned on Rapunzel. I personally thought the reasons the show gave for her turning on her friends and her own father were unrealistic, unreasonable, and pathetic. Those reasons honestly turn her character into a bad person. I mean it's BS that a 22 year old woman would obsess so much over her biological mother who she barely remembers that she would turn her back on her adoptive father who loved her dearly and raised her well for the vast majority of her life. She basically threw everything her father did for her in the trash 🗑 and acted like his love and affection as a parent was meaningless. She took the side of an evil woman who psychologically abused her best friend and forcefully kidnapped her. And for what? Because she was jealous that she wasn't always the center of attention and didn't always get her way. She couldn't handle the fact that Rapunzel was royalty and was technically her boss as the future Queen. The writing made it seem like her main motivation for betrayal was purely because she wanted more status and power than Rapunzel and everyone else. I think the writing for Cassandra's character arc was just bad. They wrote her like an ungrateful, selfish, immature, greedy, and power hungry villain, which was a huge mistake considering that the writers make it seem like the audience should sympathize with her. If they wanted her to be sympathetic, they should have given her a reason that people can sympathize with and makes realistic sense. As a result many people ended up hating Cassandra as a character after her villain arc because her betrayal was for greedy and selfish reasons and nobody actually seriously did anything bad to her to cause her to snap. On the other hand Varian was a well written sympathetic villain because Rapunzel broke her promise to help him, let the guards kick him out of her castle, and let his father (temporarily) die. So in a sense, Rapunzel betrayed him first. He primarily turned against Corona because his friends abandoned him in his time of need, at least from his point of view, and he wanted to get Rapunzel to use her hair to save his dad.

But what I’ve gathered is, she feels like someone else is always in her spotlight. She never gets anything to herself. And Raps, whenever she tries to bring it up ignores it in the belief that it’s nothing. That’s why cass would go so far and do so much damage, ( I know this is basically what you said but I just wanted to make my own sense if it) and also why she would leave, I agree she should be in the next movies but like you said she needed to be her own person and staying with Raps her whole life just wouldn’t have room for that

@@AuraKumo104 I agree that Cassandra’s arc was much worse than Varians; however, I still believe her motivations are fair just dragged out to long to the point where she is a completely different character. In my opinion Rapunzel was not a good friend to Cass as she never realized how much she hurt Cass. They really only ever make up with each other over the Great Tree situation, never about Cassandra’s unsatisfied feelings with her life. I personally relate to Cassandra so perhaps that’s why I agree with her more. But I do understand your point about her abandoning her father. Though in fairness to Cass she was disappointed in her father (who also made it nearly impossible for Cassandra to become a warrior) at the end of season 1, and only made up with him in the heat of the battle because she was worried about him and the fight (and because she new she would finally be in the spotlight). Also, in the flashback episode where Cass and Raps become friend Cassandra was about to leave the kingdom to become a warrior and presumably never told her father this either. Cassandra is a selfish character from the start, which is why I feel her arc is good but not great and not even close to the near perfection of Varians

But since she is in her twenties, she should have the emotional maturity to understand Raps has literally never had friends or really had to take others into account for most of her life and might not understand she’s hurting her friend. Or at the very least, not be upset to the point of villainy at Raps because Gothel kidnapped Raps as a baby and locked her in a tower to use for her own selfish purposes.

First, her mother chose Rapunzel to look young and beautiful every day, and then her ‘father’ was searching for Rapunzel to bring her home for a majority of their lives. So in all honesty, Cas thought that if she couldn’t be chosen over Rapunzel, she had to become something entirely different to prove to herself that she is better than her and also to, in her mind and opinion, make her mother proud of her and finally worth the attention she always deserved and desired.

I think Cass's betrayal is completely understandable - she was tired of always being in someone's shadow, quite literally never being the main character like we see in Waiting in the Wings. She couldn't get past the jealousy of Rapunzel being the chosen one when Cass had worked for everything in her life and was still just a sidekick. I think it's actually a very clever acknowledgment of the trope of the secondary character, and explains why she doesn't want to stay in Corona because she needs to have her own adventures without just following other people.

Another problem is that one girl (Raps) can't understand other people feeling's(18 years in the Tower have it's own consecventions) so she unintentionally hurting people who close to her(Varian, Cass-yep her epic fail with " Just wait"), while another girl(Cass) can't share her feelings with others, asking them for help, so Cass stay alone and contine digging her down

@@Passions5555 There were supposed to be more Varian appearances planned for S2 initially, but I remember the writers removed it all but one in order for Varian's return in S3 to impact more. I guess the writers didn't want us to worry about the underlying issues bubbling up in Corona for S2 especially that the main characters are all out in the world as of that time.
Although, we did get some Corona sections in S2, such as the time Rapunzel sent back a lanturn to her parents at the end of the island homesick episode, or that Cassandra and Rapunzel flashback in the Great Tree, and Rapunzel's dream in the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow. How barely Corona was focused in S2 did help matter those instances they did bring up the Corona setting again a lot more to be honest. The show runners have admitted point blank that Varian was never supposed to be anything but a plot device and I think they resented his popularity somewhat so they took him out of his planned appearances for season 2. I really think that was the actual reason. I love Cassandra's character and though I have issues with the execution of her villain arc, I did like her as villain.

honestly, ive got to say, i would NOT call either varian or cass as twist villains purely because of intentions. someone like that lady you mentioned who was in disguise, or hans from frozen... before we even meet them they come in with bad intentions and are simply not seen as bad before The Reveal because they intentionally act good and/or forgettable and out of the focus of attention, or whatever other way they do their best to keep the blame or suspicion off of them from both the audience and the people in the story...
...while both varian and cass didnt have bad intentions at first. varian was just a little guy who liked doing science and chilling with his dad on the edges of the kingdom until something devastating happened and he begged for help that he wasnt given, and he got beyond upset about it and it pushed him over the egde from just a little guy to a villain who was genuinely hurt by someone elses actions no matter what the circumstances were
and then cass was sort of chipped at over time by never getting what she really wanted and always being on the side lines waiting to finally have what she yearned for but it was always just out of reach, until finally she saw a chance to get even a crumb of what she wanted, and to even have more power over those she percieved as having been in her way no matter how much it was even intentional on anyones elses part, not to mention everything that was going on with her feelings about her mother and how she thought that rapunzel was at fault for her mother not being there for her (until of course when she was confronted with the fact that gothel made that decision because she was a purely selfish person who didnt even care about either daughter-)
i have a lot of feelings about cass i could go off all day about her nhbgfv everyone seems to think she was made bad out of nowhere but i honestly completely get it dude. like. i relate to her fr. i even get why she was being kinda horrible to other people for a while cause first of all she was now powerful but also when you feel left behind by the world you-... im rambling again i have to stop

I really liked the slice of life episodes since Rapunzel did live her entire life in a tower so letting her interact with the world was quite a good thing to do, but I do agree that they didn't strike a good balance between those and story episodes/story moments. Both season 1 and 2 had at least 4 episodes each that felt like a full on waste of time that could have been better spent doing pretty much anything else. Building up Varian more, or Cassandra more. Actually having Rapunzel try checking on Varian! Play more into the whole 'even though Rapunzel was locked up her whole life she is still a mf-ing princess so she went straight to having the luxury life where she doesn't have to want for anything if she doesn't want to as opposed to Cass who has always had to fight and claw for everything.' There were just...far better slice of life stories they could've gone with in several situations.

Yeah, I hated Cassandra season 3. A large majority of the scenes she was in had me mad beyond belief. I haven't been this pissed at character work in a long time. She COULD have been so good. When they tried to make her good, she actually made sense and felt like the Cassandra I knew and loved (think the ep where she realizes Zan tiri is evil and dresses as Faith. That whole section was actually great before she chucks it away for a 'grand fanale'). There was so much potential, so many great ways to do her character arc, and they just didn't do it.
I heard an alternate idea for her the other day, where she want's power for the glory, and to make people listen to her, but she wants to help protect Corona with it. Like, she always wanted to be a member of the guard. She likes protecting people. What if she tried to take the captain of the guard position for herself, with her newfound power? What if she did good things, for the wrong reasons? I could even see her reasonably trying to take over Corona, if she believed she could and that she was a better fit for it than the king and queen. And this is just one of many ways that her character could actually work without making her completely stupid. I'm so bitter, especially since she was done so well in season 2. So much potential. Just wasted.

    • @clobertina8176
      @clobertina8176 Před 2 lety +3

that honesty would have been cooler!
      imagine it!
she takes the Moonstone as a way to protect Repunzel but it consequently started to drive her slowly insane as time went by turning her into a villian.
I think that would be more fitting for Cass's character as well because she would still care about Repunzel but also still be a villain at the same time due to the Moonstone's slow corruption.
Causing her to be constantly conflicted about her decisions and eventually seeing herself as a monster after realizing the gravity of taking the Moonstone would do to her and seeing all the pain she's caused to those she loved.
Eventually leading up to when she attacks Corona, she now feels as though nobody will forgive her, feeling as though she's lost everything and has nothing left to lose now, becoming the monster she once feared.
THAT is what I think a Villain Cassandra should have been than the one we got honestly,
it's more fitting to Cass's character and would make her eventual redemption a lot more emotional and impactful if i'm honest.
      (plus it makes more sense)
