  • In this video review, you'll learn how to play Riftforce, what you'll mess up on in your first games, and why I think it's better than Unmatched. For more on Riftforce, please visit the game page on BoardGameGeek: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2...

I've been testing the alpha on bga and loving the strategy of the draft and trying out all the different synergies.

BGA seems like a great avenue for repeat play in a hurry! -WEM

Great review. Nailed it with regards to Unmatched. For me I could not get into it, just felt haphazard like you described, not a lot of opportunity for planning. Rift Force seems streamlined yet deep. I’m going to have to try it.

I'm always on the lookout for two-player "competition" games that do something more interesting than just cloning Magic: the Gathering in a different way. Thanks for putting this on my radar.
Given your situation, Eric, I'd be really curious to know if you've played BattleCON in any of its (honestly overwhelming number of) iterations. It's my go-to head-to-head 2P game because it's perfect information, with the only luck being yomi/"Vizzini" simultaneous choosing. You always know exactly what your opponent has available, and the question is what counterplay you go for. I bring it up not just because I think it's very good, but because in some ways it's almost the opposite design of Riftforce, in that it's perfect-information but complex-interaction rather than imperfect-information and simple-interaction. Both games' complexities come from the admixture of those two things.

I like the look of BattleCON and most of what Level 99 Games does, but I lack a consistent partner for such games, which I think is essential for really getting a handle on gameplay, so no, I haven't tried it.
I used to play a ton of Magic back in the day and like dueling games in general, but some require more of a commitment than others. -WEM

7 Wonders duel, Redlands, Dice Throne, Catan duel, Targi and Hanamikoji are good 2 player duel games
