We used to compete with my father to use the only radio we had at home us listening to cinema songs and my dad listening to Carnatic songs.
Only one singer will we all agree to listen without competing for the radio. That was “ Higgins Bhagavadar”. My dad obviously attended his concerts in Chennai. After decades I listened to this rendition living now in the USA on CZcams and finally got his rare to find CD on a trip to Chennai. His songs and divine voice take me back to my childhood in India, my memories of my dad.
John Higgins was trained in classical music in the West before his introduction to Carnatic music. His expertise and dedication led to his title Bhagavadar. He was very popular on the radio and his concerts were popular.
He was to embark on a Carnatic music tour of South Africa. However fate led him to reach “Lord Rama” . This was due to an accident in the USA by a drunken driver while the great man was walking his dog.
I have listened to so many Carnatic and film music playback singers sing Entaro Mahanubhavulu. No one came close to John Higgins. He fulfilled the full potential of the creation of Saint Thygaraja. Even to someone not into Carnatic music ignorant of Telugu would be moved by his divine voice. Ultimate tribute to Lord Rama.
Sir you summarised every single word i wanted to write about this great musician. It shows the love for a divine soul. 🙏
I heard him in the centenary hall of the Mysore university, his rendition of complex ragas of CARNATIC was exquisite, appealing, and melodious........but fate willed otherwise by snatching him from us......RIP.
A great exponent Johnn Higgins being a westerner has mastered Karnataka Classical music.Richly deserved tributes
I had heard his music in my young age.I think he passed away around 82 to 84.since then I have not heard his recitals.thank u for this audio and my salutes to that great soul.I think God had blessed him to fulfill his past live unfulfilled dream and taken as soon as he attained it.
Listened to Shri Higgins decades ago in Chennai, a late night concert which spilled well over midnight.
His Krishna nee begane baaro was so moving and heartfelt. I can still hear his golden voice. Several in the audience were moved to tears and I heard some say "antha kannan nerileye vandhutan" meaning "feels like Krishna himself has appeared "
They say those God loves die young. God surely loved Professor Higgins a lot to have taken him away too soon.
Crushing loss for Carnatic music.
Crushing loss for Carnatic Music - cute expression
@@Z.Y.Himsagar indeed the cruelty of his early death
Jon B Higgins is an all time great singer. His pronunciation of every words in the lyrics are very very clear.and flawless.
,
Jon B Higgins pronuncian and the way he handling the song in a great scale. All the best
So much love in his singing just like Ms Subul Lakshmi
Entharo Mahanubavulu - M S S singing most of us have often heard, but an American,. John
B Higgins singing the same is a very rarely we
would have heard. It is really goes inside our souls when we hear this. I have never heard a heart rendering song like this before. It is really Good Grace to him to give him this kind of talent.
Higgins very great carnatic musician, being a foreigner he achievedit.
Great musician. God's ways can't be understood. Why he was snatched away when he was young.
❤ I love and respect this Musician 2:48 for his effort and devoltion towards our music branch. Heard him directly. Unfortunately he left us for his heavenly abode at a young age.. MHSRIP
Tragically died very young in a car crash. I had the singular privilege of watching him perform. I was a child growing up in Calcutta where he sang for close to 3 hours and would do a 'namaskaram' everytime there was a reference to 'Deva' or 'Rama'.
you are very lucky to witness such a great soul!
How lucky you and blessed him !
Srinivas Devarakonda worse. He was killed in a drunken driver hit and run while he was walking his dog. Truly tragic.
Poorva janma sesham. Jon Higgins.
Moved to know he did namaskaram gesture each time there's a lyrical reference to Rama.
At age 45, he was killed by a car driven by an intoxicated driver on December 7, 1984, while walking his dog.
Rich heritage acquired by a foreigner. Fortunate those who were able to hear his rich voice.Thankfully it's heartening renderings to make available his songs.
My father use to listen Endaro Mahanubhavulu by Bhagatar Highin and I too love same way
Only few are with crystal clear words and one among is Bhagavathar
What a recite Govardhana Giridhara
The love of music made him to choose the correct destination. The pure heart is known n his voice. Limitless pranaams to your soul.

U r great without knowing the language & culture learning &achieving the hight really it shows dedication salutes. we r unfortunate.
A great soul indeed! God create good souls only with a time limit. Can't imagine an American can sing so beautifully! Salutations!
My father Shri B K Vasudeva Murthy who lived in mysuru was an ardent admirer of his concerts. Great singer.
Thanks for this I got to hear Shri John Higgins in Berkeley at a Presbyterian church that often hosted south Indian music Soga Suga was the on Kriti I remember. I bought an LP of his music. ALAS he died too early. As a Tibetan Buddhist I'm superstitious. Devas or Ghahas took him
What a voice!
I recall Sri Nagayya & Sri Eela pata Raghu Ramayya.
Great, being a westerner he mastered
He is a great inspiration. I love his singing
My vocabulary fails me to express my feelings about the rendition
Yes the words are not clear ...
No words can describe Mr.Higgins.My humble pranams to this great man. What beauty,,literally words fail to describe.I didn't know he died young. What singing fantastic.
No words are sufficient to describe my sublime gratitude and admiration for Jon Higgins. Been listening to him for 40 years or more.
I repeat what our friend Sri Hari Kumar K S has said 2 years ago.Sahasra kodi pranam.I learned from my mother S Padma praising him beyond imagination, how he was a sishya to the great Ariyakkudi, extolling his virtuoso in singing Sro in Endharo.
So elevating a musicisian that too from America.
Sri not Sro
Even the Indian couldn't pronounce such a perfect letter. the greatest perfectness is there in all languages. gt. we Lost.
great. hats off to you sir
Besides Wikipedia, there isn't much material to know about Jon Higgins. Knowing internet wasn't there in his days, it could be expected there would be other material that would be posted on the internet to know about him. But couldn't find much.
After all, we are a great society that preserved Vedhas and Upanishads via Karna Parampara, for thousands of years, leave alone contemporary techniques ..!
A billion namaskarams. Pure genius and Easwara blessings that he did this miracle. What a beautiful rendition? RIP.
He came he conquered he left .
Hats off you sir. No words to say
Thanks for sharing Sir. Higgins bhagavathar lives through his songs
Still a haunting melody. Even after a long gap of more than four decades, i still hear and mesmorised by his sweet voice '...thennam solai thazahithu..' in a perfect pronunciation which many of our native clans lagging. He never departed. He is and will be for ever till I breath last.
Great, great musician. How selfish of God to take Shri Higgins all for Himself, but at the same time understandable. No doubt he is with the Gandharvas now.
No words to say
Thanks Saregama. He is an inspiration , just the fact he came and learnt carnatic music and render krithis in such an amazing manner.

It must have taken him lost more hard work....
And for TM Krishna to say carnatic music is dominated by brahmins🤦🏻
God made a mistake ! He made the singer take birth in the American soil, Realising His mistake, He sent the genius to India where he learnt carnatic music with utmost devotion and rendered the songs beautifully. Unfortunately, the very same God snatched him away from his admirers. Inscrutable are the ways of God ! Yet another Jon Higgins ! No Chance ! Sharma
who was his music teacher? please
I do not know please
stanley kumar v
"He began his Indian music studies in Wesleyan courses taught by Robert E. Brown and T. Ranganathan, and was quickly captured by the subtle beauty of the art form. He decided to fully dedicate himself to learning the language of Carnatic music, and went to India on a Fulbright scholarship to learn from Ranganathan's brother, T. Viswanathan. Within a short period of time he performed to great acclaim at the Tyagaraja Aradhana, an important music festival in South India. He later continued his studies under their sister, renowned dancer T. Balasaraswati..."

No god makes westerners who were Hindu before take birth so Indians of today see the reverence western geniuses have got for India and hinduism
