    I have read somewhere that a wonderful painting of Sri Ramachandra was brought on foot by Sri Valajapete Venkataramana Bhagavathar for being presented to his Guru, Sri Thyagaraja Swami. Sri Thyagaraja went to the entrance of Thiruvayyaru to receive it and overcome by happiness at looking the painting, he sang this kriti. Therefore the words Nadachi vacchiteevo become significant and Sri BMK's rendering brings the scene before our eyes. What a wonderful soulful rendering! Thanks so much for Sri Srinivasa murthygaru for sharing this recording.

      Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness,
      Thou foster-child of silence and slow time,
      Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
      A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
      What leaf-fring'd legend haunts about thy shape
      Of deities or mortals, or of both,
      In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
      What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
      What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
      What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?
      Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
      Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
      Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
      Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
      Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
      Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
      Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
      Though winning near the goal yet, do not grieve;
      She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
      For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
      Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
      Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
      And, happy melodist, unwearied,
      For ever piping songs for ever new;
      More happy love! more happy, happy love!
      For ever warm and still to be enjoy'd,
      For ever panting, and for ever young;
      All breathing human passion far above,
      That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy'd,
      A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.
      Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
      To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
      Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
      And all her silken flanks with garlands drest?
      What little town by river or sea shore,
      Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
      Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn?
      And, little town, thy streets for evermore
      Will silent be; and not a soul to tell
      Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.
      O Attic shape! Fair attitude! with brede
      Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
      With forest branches and the trodden weed;
      Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
      As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
      When old age shall this generation waste,
      Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
      Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
      "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,-that is all
      Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

      Yes, I agree. While BMK never seems to have insisted on this or that accompanist for any given concert, there were some who were so sympatico/sympatica with his manodharma that they played with utmost sensitivity. With these people, he visibly enjoyed their music as one expert with another. I found such rapport between him and UKS, TVG, MSG, and Annavarapu. This is only in my experience. There might well have been many others. With these, you could see how much fun he had and what a ride he created for us all. He used to really let himself go!
      In the 1970s concert I alluded to earlier on this page, (then) Master Praveen accompanied him. Praveen was a young lad, teenager. He was like a kitten just rearing to jump and play and roll with things. I have never seen BMK in greater joy! He challenged the youngster with such joy and totally revelled in his percussion-playing.
      Śrī Murthy, with your postings here, you are helping me recall so many wonderful moments in my life. Thank you! :)

      Balamurali is a legend of music. We can accept him as son of thyagaraj seamy. No one has such a Devine voice in this world.but some people of cheap mentality misunderstood his simplicity and strightforwordness. Our nation lost the God of music and Jim of bharathadha. Thanks.
    Beautiful!
    I recollect the first time I heard this krti rendered by BMK. Fort High School, Bengaluru, Rāmanavamī concert sometime in the early-mid 1970s.
    Four things are still vivid in my memory:
    1. It was as leisurely as this. There was no rush of any kind. Everyone just settled in, became almost totally still, except for the appreciative swaying or nodding and the occasional "ahahaha" or "bhaley bhaley" or "bhesh bhesh". Your mind could not wander even for a second!
    2. The rendering was at once both sensuous and majestic. He extracted so much bhāva from just those two phrases 'nadachi vachchitivo' and 'nā prānanātha'.
    3. Most others' renditions I had heard until then were awkward with stretching the 'nā prānanātha' over the whole second āvartanam. But he did the simple thing of repeating 'nadachi vachchithivo' in the 1st half of the 2nd āvartanam. It was genius because it extracted a lot more drama out of the lines.
    4. And the svaraprastāra can only be described as dizzying flights of imagination full of joyous fun. His joy on stage was infectious ... the accompanists (I don't remember who they were) were also so into the music with him. The dramatic practice of his singing svara and asking each instrumentalist to express it on their instruments, and the exercise leading up to a crescendo that just made one want to jump, stomp one's feet, and whistle loudly. Or sit totally still and let it all wash over one. Or anything or everything between these two. The choices were available. :)
