    Food is the limiting supply on a nuclear submarine I’ve done a 72 day patrol and I know of a couple of 150++day patrols on “special boats” and the USS Pennsylvania did a
    l o n g patrol

    Eventually, it will have to go in dry dock. Sea animals will begin to cling to it. Thus, a sub must leave the water at some time.
    A nuclear sub can remain underwater (due to it's oxygen generating capability). But, it must leave for the dry dock at some time.
    This is true for all ships.

    In the strictest sense, 20 plus years for nuke powered subs. If it weren’t for the need for food for the sailors, indefinitely, till the reactor needs refueling, possibly never.

    Replacing batteries with hydrogen fuel cell will be a good option

    • @MarkYeung1
      @MarkYeung1 Před 2 lety +3

      You still need oxygen (ie air) for the hydrogen to burn.

      @@MarkYeung1 that can be carried in a separate tank. Hydrogen has a higher energy density than any other fuel

      How about the German style fuel cells AND the lithium batteries that the Japanese are using?
