I love high scandy puukkos- nothing comes close to the pleasure they give when carving.The Very light weight gives perfect control and the handle is done absolutely right.

I worked 3 days in the garden doing major cutting and trimming. I was surprised how effective a puukko can be.

I got mine and absolutely love it. Beautiful work of art! I rubbed some bees wax on the handle to kinda seal the wood and it really brings out the wood grain and color. Will have my own knife review this spring. God bless!

Nóż wybrany i kupiony, jest niesamowicie ostry, polecam.
Generalnie lubuje się w nożach skandynawskich mam ich kilka generalnie prawie całą kolekcję Roselliego, ale postanowiłem odmienić coś innego i warto, pozatym jest to dość tani nóż, a wykonanie i jako nóż chyba nic lepszego nie miałem w rękach.

Excellent video. Thank you 😊 I never knew Vaara was differential tempered. I watched a video of it batoning and you could clearly see spine was affected, bunged. Why people want to do everything with a small knife except cut & slice I’ll never know.

Thanks for a nice explanation of the characteristics. I've had my eye on an Ahti leuku, and probably should expect similar qualities in the carbon steel blade.
+Random Button Pusher They generally don't mess up as far as I can tell. Those micro flaws are only noticeable to someone as picky as me :) And most of their carbon steel knives will be selectively heat treated. Although, some of their new blades have even greater hardness discrepancies - 52 spine 64(!) edge, and others have three temper zones I believe.

I have this as my main bushcraft and hunting knife, it is an excellent tool. Fire steel is no problem as I have a seperate hard steel striker attached to the lanyard - simple!
Vaara is also the Finnish word for a large, forest-covered and (usually) rocky hill. Names of Finnish knives usually reference the wilderness or wildlife in one way or the other, so I doubt the name was chosen to reference danger.

This is the perfect knife to accompany a large hatchet or small forest axe.
Noticed that the brass bolster on the vaara vas a little dark. If you use some scrubbing detergent and a toothbrush it will be as good as new

I bought and put handles on two lauri blades, one has the visible hardening line on it. They are by far my best cutting knives. I squared the spine and was surprised when it didn't spark the ferro rod. Don't really want to use the tip so i have a piece of hacksaw blade attached to the rod.
Yup. Having some type of scraper is a good idea when carrying these knives. I like them anyway. They are very good looking and fuctional.
Actually puukko (techniclly) doesn't mean knife in Finnish. Veitsi would mean knife. Puukko means that one type of knife we have.

I´d say you eat and prepare food with veitsi, pretty much everything else is saved for puukko, for example stabbing your best friend while drunk.

+aHigher Power Technically, you can use the tip or the cutting edge if you really have to but it's not gonna be very comfortable or effective.
The heat treatment Lauin Metalli is performing is not about leaving the spine of the knife softer than the cutting edge. What they do is they make the core of the blade harder ~59HRC while the sides are ~53HRC. This gives a result similar to laminated steel but they obtain it by special heat treatment.
How would you do that with one, homogeneous piece of metal? What you're describing is only possible by laminating or sandwiching one piece of harder steel between two softer pieces. You can't separately heat-treat the core and the outside of the blade but you can harden the edge and leave the spine softer. The only thing that comes close to what you're proposing is case hardening but that wouldn't exactly harden the core. Just the edge to a certain, limited depth.

You mention that this knife probably doesn't have the appropriate metal properties to be a main bushcraft knife. Would you recommend the stainless Ahti knives for that purpose instead?
It can be a bushcraft knife if you don't mind having to strike your ferro rod with a separate striker, not relying on your knife as a traditional flint striker and not battoning (heavily), which I guess is rather a big deal for most.
But yeah, except for heavy battoning and sparking off of flint, the stainless version will do the ferro rod part if you sharpen the spine. Some spines may even already be sharpened.
I got the kellam puukko. Look just like this knife.

Do you know if the blade is also glued inside the handle? Or it's just pinned? I'm asking because you said il got loose when batoning. Also if you square off the spine doesn't it spark the ferro rod? I tried with a normal carbon lauri blade(everywhere i looked it says it's just high carbon steel) and it produced sparks.
I honestly don't know if it's glued. The smaller one seems to be but the one that got loose probably wasn't. Maybe mine was just an odd screwup.
No it won't spark even if the spine seems sharp. The ones that do are evenly tempered throughout their length and width. Some, like mine, are selectively heat treated and just too soft at the spine. I could get a spark from the edge but I wasn't gonna ruin it just to show it in the video :)

Nożyk zupełnie nie w moim typie. Ja lubię coś większego - ostrze najlepiej 13cm, drop point, okładki z micarty lub z G10 i obowiązkowo pochwa z kydexu. Całkiem możliwe, że jeszcze nie dorosłem do tego typu noży.
Szymek, fajnie dobierasz muzykę do filmów.

Jak nie rzeźbisz i nie polujesz, to taki nóż najwyżej mozesz sobie na półce postawić, żeby ładnie wyglądał. Ale to też zależy od tego co dla ciebie jest ładne :)

It's possible. All they said on the website at the time I was ordering it, was 'high carbon, Lauri metalli'. If you google what the high carbon lauri metalli is, it tends to be 80CrV2.

Probably a Lauri blade. Lauri makes blades for several knife makers.

Wolałbyś by ten nóż był zahartowany całkowicie? Czy hartowanie selektywne ma jakąś przewagę nad całkowitym? Z tego co wiem, hartuje się tak siekiery.
+Siwy ... i niektóre parangi/maczety i miecze. Dawniej robiło się tak między innymi z oszczędności - ta większa, miękka część nie musi być z dobrej, wysokowęglowej stali. Nie znam się na mieczach ale jeśli chodzi o siekiery to zaleta jest taka, że nie pękają. Niby się nie powinno ale na dobrą sprawę, to dzięki takiemu hartowaniu można nimi i lód rozbijać i kamienie łupać (mogą się przy tym odkształcić i poluzować ale raczej nie pękną). Taki ciężki kawał stali na długim trzonku ma sporą energię kinetyczną. Jak źle trafisz i poleci w kamień, to zahartowana na 60 HRC siekiera mogłaby potrzaskać. Tomahawki Cold Steel mają siekierzyska z monostali 1055 i nie pękają ale one są znacznie lżejsze no i jednak nie trzymają tak ostrości bo to dość miękka stal sprężynowa. Podobnie jest z nożami. Jeśli zrobisz cały nóż zahartowany na 62-64 HRC, to będzie oczywiście bardzo długo trzymał ostrość (o ile się nie wyszczerbi) ale złamie się jak pilnik przy pierwszej okazji. A jak mu dasz grzbiecik ze stali odpuszczonej do 52 HRC, to możesz go nawet młotkiem tłuc i co najwyżej się powgniata tu i tam.
Mam podobny fiński nóż hartowany jednolicie i wolę jednak Ahti. Ale raczej bardziej jako tradycyjnie wykonaną ciekawostkę i taki nożowy snobizm :)
Zrób filmik ze swoimi wszystkim nożami :)

Thanks to this movie I know now which knives not to buy :) Totally not my type of a knife. Both looks and purpose it's made for. I'm more into David Canterbury's philosophy of a knife. Nevertheless I like all of your movies :)

But I have and use many very different knives that don't necessarily have to have something to do with survival. Kitchen knives for example. Thanks.

Lauri is making not good blades( ahti buy lauri blades and use in their knifes) they are very soft steel. I try the hardnes of lauri carbon 125 on my factory and hardnes is 49 hrc. Polar carbon 50. You can watch it onbmy youtube chanal. Sory for my english.
Lauri make dozens of blades from different steels, with different heattreat. Some of them are zone tempered or selectively heattreated, so most of the blade is gonna be soft. But the edge itself is said to be 60-61 HRC in this particular model. I have another one that says 64 HRC edge and 53 HRC spine. I watched your video and it seems you never actually measured the hardness of the edge so that's probably why it came out so soft.
In finnish "veitsi" means knife, whereas "puukko" is basically a hunting knife

Puukko is actually more of a multi purpose tool. In the past everyone had a puukko and they used it from woodcarving to eating and gutting fish etc.
I'd say that puukko is a sub-type of knife, I'd call it more something like utility knife than a hunting knife. I think that hunting knives have that blood groove or something.
Puukko is just a name for a certain type of knife, like leuku is for those Lapland knives.
Veitsi means knife and that can be used when speaking of puukkos too.

the handle isnt just ordinary birch its visakoivu its very hard and it only grow in lapland.
puukkos are very durable they dont loosen if its proberly made.
