I kid you not, John & I went back and forth so much more hours after we shot this, so many different opinions on both ends started forming, I almost didn’t want to post this lol. BUT this is the raw honest Instant Reaction so here it is for ya’ll.
Movie does deserve debate. while at this moment in time I still don’t like the execution, there are things about the meta nature I began to appreciate about what this represents in concept / themes overall in the franchise. I still need to watch it again but we’ll see. Always okay to publicly not like something when most do.

The action was definitely a total bummer, and a lot of the "new" characters were underused or wasted, but I found myself really engrossed in Neo's ordeal, the new state of the Matrix and the real world, and the reignition of Neo's and Trinity's love story, so I personally didn't find it boring at all.
Exactly! Lots of flaws but the new ordeal Neo is in had my full attention. One thing with movies is they can always touch on the details with a directors cut release or have flashbacks in the sequel.

I went in with low expectations and was secretly hoping to be surprised…and I was surprised, but at how bad it was. I felt annoyed that they could have done so much better. With all the advances we’ve had since, and all the time to write a good script. Terrible. Trinity at the end was just a poor decision. There was no build up to the reveal, and it made no sense. They could have built up to that reveal and made it make sense as to why the 2 pods etc and I’ve had bought it, but nothing. It felt like girl power for the sake of girl power, which is just a bit insulting to all. Such a shame.
You stated facts. That's how I felt after I saw this movie. I was disappointed it was a terrible execution. I loved the original Matrix and this didn't feel nothing like the Matrix it felt like a recap instead of a new fresh adventure.

I hear you man. First 45 minutes had me excited but then it just started going downhill. Nothing seemed necessary. Just a bunch of noise. Another film where the trailers were better than the film.

Agreed, went in with low expectations, and it turned out worse than I was expecting. Disappointed in most aspects of the movie, similar to Greg. It almost felt like this was a fan-made movie.
A HUGE thing missing for me was score and soundtrack, which played such massive roles in the earlier films. The last 20mins of Resurrections is so oddly void of any kind of signature score that I felt like I was watching the movie unfold as if I were part of the crew doing the filming. Think of all the action from Reloaded minus Burly Brawl, Chateau and Mona Lisa Overdrive...that's how this felt to me.
I definitely need to see it again, but yeah the soundtrack wasn’t nearly as punchy as the first film/s then again neither were the set pieces and action. Sadly it did end up referencing and using nostalgia say more than I’d hoped. I’m just gonna enjoy it for what it is, but I think it makes me appreciate the first movies even more. We might have a sequels/prequels scenario on our hands, boys!
😷Oh great soundtrack references regarding the great fighting/car scenes from the previous matrix movies 🎥, but this version has its own flavor 😉

After watching the movie in cinema, I completely agree with Greg, word for word. A critic I follow gave it 4/10 before watching I was upset about that and thought I couldn't be that bad, but after watching.. I think it deserved a 2/10. Maybe because I really enjoyed the trilogy and this really disappointed me as a Matrix fan.

I have a good feeling that Resurrections will be divisive among critics and hardcore fans.
As someone growing up that didn't want a 4th Matrix movie, the marketing has surprisingly intrigued me.
I hope I enjoy the movie myself, but you never know.
I wholeheartedly think that, along with the previous 3 films, the passage of time and a lot of theories/speculations will dictate what place the movie has in cinema and the whole franchise itself.
Also, Greg, don't let the dickheads get to you. Just like with Eternals, if you didn't like Matrix Resurrections, you are within your right to say that you didn't like it.
How it handles the world and characters, it really is a great comparison to The Last Jedi.

The Analyst’s monologue sent chills down my spine. It is the movie that could have been, instead of the one we saw, which stretched one good premise into oblivion by a director who clearly never wanted to make the movie.
The monologue, coupled with actually experiencing the entire machine civil war and the fall of Zion. I wanna watch that!!

This was a disgrace to the Matrix franchise and film making in general. In fact movies in the Cinema and Streaming platforms are beginning to get worse and worse every year. You would think with their huge budgets they would of respected the franchises high standards of movie making but this film was a complete let down in every way, Cast, Storyline, script, Acting, fight scenes, logic, special effects and so on.

Exactly. The matrix affected my life deeply. Matrix and Terminator 2. I was 9 years old when I watched the first film. The depth and meaning it conveyed affected me so much and can't even express how dear I hold the matrix movies. And I know it is so with a lot of people.

The best thing about Matrix Resurrections was the trailer.
I turned to my wife after the warehouse fight with the Frenchman yelling and said "That was not a matrix fight scene, it was very boring." The new Agent Smith was just a douche, nothing menacing about him at all. The Trinity floating like a balloon scene was very anticlimactic. The Frenchman was a useless cameo, I thought the ghost twins would come out for a sec, but nope. Neo just blocked stuff through most of the action scenes. What a big let down this was.
They reference the twins at least somewhat by how trinity and neo talk to the analyst at the very end sharing the sentence and taking turn with words and similar cadence.
Just watched it and came on CZcams to see if anyone felt the same way. Completely agree with Greg. Big fan of the trilogy too. Only thing is I’m not that bummed because I expected it to be bad. That trailer had moments of potential but also glimpses of the cheesiness and same old stuff from movies nowadays. @Extraneus I have watched both, I liked both, I thought both had good action scenes, but No Way Home and 99% of the MCU, as you so eloquently put, have many fight scenes that are better than the ones in this movie, not to say that they are bad, just not better than your examples, I even think that people are a little blind to nostalgia, because some of the action scenes in the original trilogy do not hold up at all, but some are better than the ones in this movie.

Finally watched it, and I liked it. I mean, I understand the criticisms of the formal and technical aspects of the filmmaking, but it doesn’t bother me enough to ruin anything. Personally, after loving the original, then watching it be co-opted by the worst sort, I’m open to LW’s meta commentary. Plus, she used so many Sense8 actors-always a bonus.
Also, I think it’s a fine parable for Gen X at middle age. Which I am, so of course I find it fascinating. Go us: the odd, aging & ignored.
I feel like this is the down side of being a hardcore fan of something, you get so invested that it's hard for something new to reach your expectations. I very much enjoyed the film. I have always been a fan of all of the Matrix films, but not a hardcore fan. I don't consume any other Matrix based media besides the films. I don't know anything about the lore. And maybe that's why I enjoyed Resurrections. But hey I get it. I AM a hardcore Star Wars fan and I hated the sequel trilogy, so I understand.
I don't think the Sequel trilogy is just bad for bad for hardcore fans. This movie is more bad as a matter if your taste is different. The action scenes aren't great.

Comparing this movie to The Last Jedi is actually perfect. If you were not a fan fo the Last Jedi and how it handled the world and characters then chances are good that you won't be a fan of The Matrix Resurrections because it uses the same strategy.

Stop with the lame "Last Jedi'ing" & "woke broke" BS for any IP/creative that doesn't rehash the same stuff and goes in a different direction, it was tired in 2017 and is just as tired now. In fact, the one that started this was that hack JJ Abrams' spineless Force Awakens comfort food reboot of A New Hope that IS the exact meta-themes Wachkowski/Matrix Resurrections comments on.
Now, can the viewer decide they prefer MORE comfort food cash grab nostalgia or something more reflective, that goes against their sequel ideas/hopes and obsessive over speculation & theory videos (like the hundreds of Snoke is this or that sillyness) that modern fandom has become? Sure. But I don't think the Matrix Resurrections did that at all. Every film prior happened. The lore is still intact. Thomas Anderson/Neo is front and center, but is not the System Anomaly we saw in the prior version of the Matrix simulation program.
Ghostbusters Afterlife (a very mediocre/lazy/copy & paste nostalgia grab) was a recent example of a studio appeasing to a fanbase for the former 2016 reboot (which was awful as well), and decided to go full tilt into nostalgia by completely turning a 1984 comedy about schlubby exterminators into a indy-drama/Stranger Things mashup with the ultimate, safe member berries storytelling. I recall Greg did not like that films handling of lore/nostalgia at all as well.

Matrix is my favorite movie of all time too. Watched it on HBO Max and felt like turning it off and finishing it the next day. They tried to recreate the 1st movie but it felt like a watered-down version. I couldn't tell if they were trying to make a more serious tone (like the 1st) or a funny/goofy one, it was weird. Action was no where near as good as 1st and 2nd. And WHERE WERE THE SLOW MO 360 SHOTS!?!?! THERE WERE NONE!! Very disappointed with this movie
For me, as a huge Matrix fan. It was what we needed. I do need to watch it again, but I did enjoy.

I had a feeling the fight scenes/ werent going to be as good, because I remember in the behind the scenes of the original film, Woo-Ping said it took about four months to train the actors for the fight scenes and Resurrections was filmed rather quickly.

Comic book movies don't really havr that so when it does its a plus. You really can't compare both unless you talk about the implementation of the nostalgia factor
I just got home from seeing it in the theaters and while I didn't hate it, it is a let down for sure. I like the concepts they talk about, I like how super meta it was. But the fact that there wasn't even 1 memorable fight scene speaks volumes. It just seemed like a generic 2021 action movie that just happened to have the characters we know and love.

I could tell from a short clip of Neo fighting the new Agent Smith that the action would be lackluster. It looked like they were learning the moves that day and there were too many edits in between. The trilogy at least had amazing choreography and fighting

EXACTLY my thought when I watch that clip from Jimmy Kimmel interview, honestly it looks so bad that you can tell both of them didn't train for it and the camera cut resembles many bad fight scenes in Hollywood movies, this maybe acceptable for other movies but not Matrix standard
The comment about the trilogy being like daredevil and the 4th being iron fist was so dead on. This was a movie where they were fine with just good enough instead of shooting for excellence.

I can see there points and respect them. Spoilers I actually was glad to see my theory about what Neo did in matrix 3 that he basically sacrificed himself to save both humanity and in a way the machines!! And after seeing that it triggered an awakening in some of the A.I machine’s to break free of the top tier A.I over lord. And that they actually start working with humans!! Plus I loved the Interactions between some of the new crew and the smaller machines that help out on the ship

The movie feels like the equivalent of someone getting teased for years, and then decides to become ultra self deprecating, to the point of being annoying. When in fact they should just strive to be confident. This is what Resurrections feels like. Lana Wachowski realizes that the last two films have been made fun as being the worst of the trilogy, so she just decided to get super meta with this one, making fun of how people “worship” the first film. Horrible idea IMO.
I really enjoyed it. They did a great job of extending the mythology.
I’ve long suspected this would be bad but I’m still so sad to hear. I was always going to watch on HBO Max, this movie was a big part of why I subscribed to it in the first place, but now I at least don’t feel bad about it.

I appreciate both of your opinions but have felt that since I heard this was coming out I would lean towards Greg. The Wachowski’s have made films after the Matrix trilogy that just tanked completely, so going back to the Matrix seemed like the only way to bounce back and now we are getting a potential trilogy of movies that will probably be akin to the response of The Last Jedi and people going “What the f did they just do to this universe that I love?” I think I’ll watch it a few times just to understand but will always love the originals more without even seeing this yet.

Stop with the lame "Last Jedi'ing" & "woke broke" BS for any IP/creative that doesn't rehash the same stuff and goes in a different direction, it was tired in 2017 and is just as tired now. In fact, the one that started this was that hack JJ Abrams' spineless Force Awakens comfort food reboot of A New Hope that IS the exact meta-themes Wachkowski/Matrix Resurrections comments on.
Now, can the viewer decide they prefer MORE comfort food cash grab nostalgia or something more reflective, that goes against their sequel ideas/hopes and obsessive over speculation & theory videos (like the hundreds of Snoke is this or that sillyness) that modern fandom has become? Sure. But I don't think the Matrix Resurrections did that at all. Every film prior happened. The lore is still intact. Thomas Anderson/Neo is front and center, but is not the System Anomaly we saw in the prior version of the Matrix simulation program.
Ghostbusters Afterlife (a very mediocre/lazy/copy & paste nostalgia grab) was a recent example of a studio appeasing to a fanbase for the former 2016 reboot (which was awful as well), and decided to go full tilt into nostalgia by completely turning a 1984 comedy about schlubby exterminators into a indy-drama/Stranger Things mashup with the ultimate, safe member berries storytelling. I recall Greg did not like that films handling of lore/nostalgia at all as well.

Just watched Matrix 4 on HBO Max it was great watched all 3 before watching the new film and it was a good movie and answered alot of the questions after what happened after Matrix 3 . I definitely will be seeing this more then once . This is one of the better movies of 2021
I feel like people who aren’t too familiar with the matrix franchise would like the movie as just a normal action flick while the people who are die hard fans would find it to be pretty shit

People who are REALLY into the matrix, know the lore, fan theories and etc, would pretty much enjoy it.

I felt a big thing for me was the music, the music did not feel like I was watching a matrix movie. if it had that music i think it would have helped a lot imo. also it was sad to see very little of the agents. They definitely made the movie to completely end the matrix or to continue with more in the future. if they do make more I hope they go back to the roots of the original movies because those were consistent and super entertaining at least for me

I've been looking forward to 3 movies, No Way Home, The Matrix 4, and The Batman. It sucks to hear The Matrix might be a letdown but it just makes me more thankful that No Way Home was so amazing. It's really hard for franchises this big to deliver on the hype.

Its why you dont even do it. Matrix 4 sucked and I totally agree with all the criticism here. Its a lazy reboot that has a shallow story that tries to resurrect the best parts of the old movies while shitting on the old story. It really seemed to me like the Ayan Rand story The Fountainhead; I'd rather destroy it than let someone else take over my masterpiece.

People will look back in 10 years and realize their rose tinted goggles prevented them from appreciating a decent plot to an actually good reboot, but those that disliked its commentary will continue to ride the hate bandwagon.
Those who were expecting The Avengers and Fast and Furious action packed scenes, im sorry, this one requires a bit more imagination than being spoon fed cool scenes.

I kinda always knew it. After the original Matrix, Wachowskis refused categorically to « repeat » themselves. Gone were the visual style, much of the practical approach, Neo’s vulnerability and the life and death stakes in the sequels. But at least, the sequels had amazing spectacle, albeit not so visceral as in the first movie. After Matrix sequels, it was clear that the sisters are not really interested neither recapturing the first movie magic, neither continuing this universe.
They should give up on the rights and let someone much more passionate and inventive to explore the Matrix Universe.

They weren't visionary. They took concepts from already existing mediums and churned it into a bottled lightning spectacle. They are one trick ponies which is why everything they made after the 1st matrix was crap.
Not “repeat” themselves, but not copy existing works among japanese mangas fi “Ghost in the Shell”. After they copy the first movie, tried to put more of their own view in it and flopped completely.

@@sixforks6543 ignoring story, the matrix reloaded had the best cinematography and choreographed fighting of the series argueably. The sequels, although not as good as the original film, were still quite amazing and very downplayed by sequel haters.
I feel like they put all their creative energy into the first film. Once you’ve made one of the greatest films of all time you can feel daunted to return because nothing will ever live up to anyones expectations.

When I watched the 1st trailer, there's a moment I suddenly burst into tears. I still have the memories of watching the first Matrix movie twenty years ago in a small screening room in my university. The teacher explained briefly the story and the meaning of the character's name before they showed the movie. That was a time when everything seemed to carry a hope for me, when there's still a bright future for a young woman in her mid 20s. Twenty years later, I must say I screw up my life, my career, and right now there're lots of things in my life that I can't find solutions. Life,to me, is without hope. So, seeing Neo and Trinity back again at this moment really triggers a lot of feelings in me.
Before I saw the movie in the theater today, I did hesitate about going. However, since lots of things in my life are much more difficult to deal with, spending 2 hours and half in the theater seems to be a better alternative. I think this reboot sequel is okay. Although there's a bit more explanation parts than I expected, I still admire the effort. It's never an easy job. Compared to what is going on in the world and what we have been through in 2020 and 2021, seeing Neo and Trinity again on the screen is definitely the best thing in 2021.

im going through a lot of reviews, with the exception of the matrix specialty channels, u guy seem to be the only ones to at least acknowledge these movies are dense with deeper meanings. i did feel like if i could have, i would have paused to digest. i had to rewatch some of the monologues a few times at home.
but if you do have a general sense of some of the deeper meanings and rewatch it around that, it is pretty good IMO.
I've been growing more and more nervous over this 'meta' angle this movie seems to be taking. It's probably just a referendum on everyone's apathy today and that'll just kill any chance of being transported to a different world than the one we're living in now

I think people just need to sit back with the film just like the first one.
The movie felt meta because we saw the previous Matrix. But canonically every version of The Matrix was aware of the previous ones through myth or story. This is why the exiles were known as vampires and warewolves because they came from the demonic hell-like Matrix that failed. Neo was the first anomaly to actually win the war and strike peace. The analyst has piggybacked off of agent Smith's connection to human emotion and is using it to gain power with the machines. The connection between neo and Trinity was so powerful that they had their own battery pod to power the machines! Epic film
Update: it's a horrible movie. Any ideas that have *some* potential are ruined by shitty action and seemingly low budget effects. Greg's take is accurate and I'm as bummed as he is.

This movie at the time of writing is at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes which means more people have liked it, than disliked it, Revolutions has 35% and Greg will die on a hill for that one.

Damn, that camera quality is insane! The lighting, the framing, the production quality is just great.
The hand to hand combat had 40 different camera angles for 2 punches and a kick. It felt like I was watching that fence jumping scene.

TL;DR: If they brought back Bill Pope as the cinematographer this would’ve been 100x better.
So I’m glad I watched this before going into it. It helped measure my expectations and I actually really liked the story overall. There were definitely moments that seemed sloppy or too goofy (lookin at you Merovingian), but the biggest issue I feel is the cinematography, especially in the action set pieces.
I was worried about this when I first saw the cast and crew list. The original trilogy was DP’d by Bill Pope, but he was busy doing Shang Chi (there’s a reason the action looks so clean). John Toll is an excellent DP in his own right, but Bill Pope nails that anime aesthetic that made the Matrix look as cool as it did. Missing him on the team I think is worse than missing Lawrence or Hugo.

I felt the same-ish. I definitely felt let down. I'm a huge matrix fan...I saw all the originals at the midnight showings opening night. It had some cool moments that shocked me but nothing really blew my mind. I also didn't get into Neil's character. I'll definitely watch it again though to see if I feel the same way.

This was a disgrace to the Matrix franchise and film making in general. In fact movies in the Cinema and Streaming platforms are beginning to get worse and worse every year. You would think with their huge budgets they would of respected the franchises high standards of movie making but this film was a complete let down in every way, Cast, Storyline, script, Acting, fight scenes, logic, special effects and so on.

My wife hadn't seen any of the prior movies. I told her the whole backstory and got her very excited to watch the film. After it was all over, I turned to her and apologized for wasting her time.
