  • It's rush hour on the rails: We re-visit Cajon Pass in Southern California and spend a couple of hours watching trains passing by on the summit. BNSF dominates the show with two monster trains, one in 4+2+2 engine configuration and the another one with a massive 9-engine consist, and many more. UP's gem is a 3+2 manifest up on the ridge, overlooking the pass. Enjoy! This is the 13th and final video in the "Expedition to SoCal" series. Well we see a lot of orange BNSF locomotives in this video that's for sure. The CREX unit was a nice surprise. The train with the 4+2+2 configuration was simply unbelievable, just like the next one with the nine locos. This location is pretty nice and the action is great too. Amazing video again, your California adventure was a big success indeed. :)

      No doubt, BNSF is the dominant railroad in this part of the country, although UP is more than just present. The desert and mountain venues with the many vantage points and backdrops are fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip and I'm glad the videos in this series could transmit at least part of this joy. Thanks so much for your feedback; I really appreciate it!

    MBMARS sorry I have to write again work was canceled bad snow storm here in Maine. I loved the train with the nine engines that was fun to watch. I got a kick out of how the interstate highway so much higher than the trains. Thank you and thank you for this video please take care

      I hope you're safe. It sounds crazy what I hear from the Northeast. The southbound lanes of the interstate were completely clogged. I was happy I didn't need to use it.

      Many thanks. Although there are periods of less action, it is one of the most traveled routes in the country. What amazed me most is how fluent traffic is. I did not observe any significant issues during the entire trip. I'm glad you enjoyed this video, too!

    Hi MBMARS I absolutely loved this video. I like how you used picture in picture nicely done. The train with the nine engines was impressive to watch. The scenery was beautiful. I agree with a person that rated your video wish you could go to west coast more often LOVE this series. Thanks so much for this video a fun watch

      I can imagine that you enjoyed it; I also like it. There are many details worth being discovered and the scenery is just great. I certainly like to railfan the west more intensively, but it's a long way to go from GA... The series/playlist contains 13 videos. I think that's not bad :)

      @Eugene Stoner My impression is that CSX has significantly improved in this regard since moving to PTC and PSR (and utilizing other means), but there are also fewer trains now, of course.

    Terrific catches/power/races/meets! I like how amazon is using intermodal/trailer containers now to deliver packages across the country from the west coast to the east coast. I believe that amazon does the same thing with Norfolk Southern (NS) trains.

    just letting you know the windscreen filter is cutting out the bass sounds from the chug of the engines. I want to hear the bassy rumble of the engines on the mountain grade!!! :) lol

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety +1

      Yea, sure. The wind blew that strong, though, that I couldn't even hear the rumble with my own ears! This was interesting.

    • @eccentriceric
      @eccentriceric Před 4 lety

      @@mbmars01 dang!!! I've had that experience when at Curtis Hill in 2008. Plus I used the windscreen filter back then and didn't realize it cuts out some of the rumble of the diesels so i couldn't hardly hear anything on the video but my friends videos the engines was loud. I take some furry material and glue it on over the mics on the camcorder since then to make a baffle to cut the wind noise down and not use a wind screen filter. Works really good.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety +1

      Ah thanks! That's a good idea.

      @@mbmars01 Now if i can figure out how to do the fancy screens you do for your titles or captions. I am using Power Director. What are you using? I like how you do your fancy intros and caption screens. I hadn't been happy with my plain jane videos.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety

      I used iMovie, which is a video software that comes with every Mac, in the past. It has some of these effects already built in. Nowadays I use the more commercial software Final Cut Pro X, also on Mac. It's like iMovie, but with more options. I know there are much fancier ways to create intros and stuff, but I'm happy with what I have right now.

    MB watched this again loved it just as much the first time. I enjoyed the sound of the big GE”S eating up territory. Did you know from your scanner that nine engines was on it’s way? Thanks again for everything from a repeat watcher

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety

      I know what you mean. There's a lot of details that one often only recognizes at the second or third look. No, I didn't know about it. BNSF and UP don't talk much on the scanner, unlike CSX or NS.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't think one can see much during the night hours lol

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 4 lety

      @Eugene Stoner The "night vision mode" on this camcorder simply enhances the IR spectrum of light that its CMOS chip can capture, but, of course, this is not specialized night-vision equipment. In other words, this mode works only decently well, if some supporting ambient light (like from street lamps) is available. The Cajon area is simply black at night (unless there's full moon lol).

      @@mbmars01 But still, aren't there mic covers like the TV reporters use. I only mention this because it detracts from the great diesel sounds in your videos.
