  • Capitalism-and low prices-depend on consumers having choices. The four conglomerates controlling 80% of American meat packing are hiking prices and forcing out small businesses. Rep. Katie Porter sat down with Rep. Cindy Axne to discuss Axne's bill to fix this broken market, boost competition, and lower costs for families.

Having choice and competition levels the playing field . Let's be honest here , if only four big corporations are buying and producing beef for market , if there is a natural disaster you are going to go hungry . Its important to suppirt agriculture . Great job, ladies! I gave up meat several years ago because of the filth and brutality of the meatpacking industry, also because of livestock's environmental impact. But to be honest, I wouldn't be able to bankroll a week's worth of meat these days, anyway. Next, I'm going to try to adjust to almond milk, since the dairy industry isn't much more humane than the meatpacking industry. I also gave up commercial cleaning solutions and laundry detergent, as well as single-use paper products. My grocery budget is still way under $50 a week. It's not for everyone, I know, but when prices go up, we sometimes have to make adjustments. Trust me, consumers do have considerable power in this issue -- if everyone in the country decided to give up meat next week, producers would bring those prices down. FAST!

Not a farmer, don't know if that is feasible. What I do know is when you are struggling to make ends meet, the first thing to go is the fruit and vegetables because of their high price. Ok, second thing to go, meat is the first. Back when we were struggling it, was dried beans, pasta, eggs, soup, crackers, cheese, and bread that we bought the most. I guess food preferences would be different for everyone.

They're so knowledgeable and focused, and clearly grounded in the reality. Middle men should be scrapped, and large farming corporations need to stop getting money from the Government and be forced to efficiently re-allocate their money. Farmers and consumers should be allowed to provide lawsuits against unfair business practices of these companies, and attempt to break extremely large companies to smaller ones that can be run by the farmers themselves.
Also, farmers used to have a lot of knowledge about many crop varieties that were water-efficient and beneficial to the overall ecology. Companies are not aware of this. If farmers are given the choice to grow what they want, and are supported in selling their stuff, both the consumer and the producer will have more choices. I'm so happy that we're seeing such a sensitive, nuanced, grounded policy by a democrat who is finally giving rural america the empowerment they deserve. Making them free from corporations, or government interference. Hopefully the appalachian poor can be helped after this. Let's work towards rural empowerment too! Not just urban!

All you had to do is listen to the cattle market report. It's like a short report. You'll know what ranchers get per pound. Go to the store and see the price for meat. So, yeah 2 dollars per pound at the ranch = 7.00 per pound steak at the grocery store. What consumers need to do is save your money. Go to a rancher buy a steer and have the rancher take it to a butcher. You'll save a lot of money. You'll have to have a freezer. You can buy half a cow at the butcher.

@@RebeccaWhite30 ok; could you make a living from selling cattle on a farm less than 10 acres? How much? In all of my calculations the difference between the butchered beef and the living cow are the greatest cost in the food. I don't understand what weather and commodities have to do with the price of cattle, unless you are the type of person draining the aquifers, and justifying it by raising the most water intense livestock possible? You are explaining a scale that is problematic to anyone with less than 100 acres.

@@MrZacchery so when there is drought, cattle owners end up selling their cattle early because there isn’t enough grass to feed them (ie small cattle producers that rely on snowmelt or rain to grow grasses, not row crops which is what I believe you are referring too). This floods the market with a supply of beef but then there is a huge gap. The life cycle of cattle is longer than pigs or chicken. Calf is born and either had its first calf at 2 years of age or is slaughtered ideally around 16-20 months depending on finishing. So instead of selling their cattle, why don’t we just buy feed? Well, because if everyone else is experiencing drought or a good portion, feed prices skyrocket. Yeah supply and demand. This has been happening and now cull prices are at a all time high because of the lack of cattle going to market (cull cattle are ones that are sold because of age, productivity etc and usually made into ground beef). As far as the CME, that’s a hot mess and better to ask an ag economics specialist. I worked in dairy markets for a decade and it’s a lot! Oh, and wildfires in Australia a few world catastrophes ago also totally changed cattle and feed prices all over the world. Now to answer your other question about cattle on small acreage and making money, it’s too complicated to just pencil out because feed, resources, butcher vicinity, and weather are way too different in all parts of our country to boil it down to one number.

Stop saying literally. The playing field isn't literally a thing. It is a figurative representation of the environs in which a competitive practice takes place.
