- In this quick video I show my newest watchmaking tool, the JKA Feintaster Micrometer, and I give a short demonstration of how it is used. I measure the pivot on a pallet fork and also the diameter of a watch jewel from a Waltham Pocket Watch. I also showed the original instructions which came with the tool when it was new and translated them from German to English.

The OD of that jewel was 1.70mm, you have to count the number of revolutions on the small dial also. Very nice tool!

It can very well be your most precise precision tool. Note that if you used "most" then it should be followed by an adjective and not by a noun. Hope this lifts the doubt and lets you enjoy the grammar of your most precise precision tool^^

There are several different levels of precision and, of course, price when it comes to measuring devices. This would be called a bench micrometer. There are also dial and digital calipers, hand held micrometers and millimeter gauges. They can be found new and also used. Hope this helps!!

Does this famous Feintaster also measure internally?. If it did, then I would understand why it is so coveted. Say the jewel is entirely missing...how do you measure to find the proper size with such precision then?. You can measure the pivot of the wheel or pallet fork for the inside hole diameter, but what about the outside diameter?. Say you just wanted to measure the internal diameter of a barrel...can the Feintaster do that?. I was just wondering because I noticed it's tough to find a micrometer that does both internal and external measuring. Most only do external.

So, the question really is. How does this tool help you more than a Micrometer? Could you let me know what you used before this? Have you compared the two? Is this the first measuring tool you have owned for watchmaking? So many questions are left unanswered, and only a few videos address this topic with this tool. These are great questions to address, considering the price difference between this ($450 to $650, depending on the type and condition) and a good Micrometer that can be had for $100 to $200.
Hi Eric. I'm not sure I understand your question. This IS a micrometer. The only other measuring tool I use for watchmaking is a digital caliper but it is not accurate enough to measure the small pivots and jewels needed for some repair jobs. This micrometer is mounted on a horizontal bed which makes it much easier when dealing with small parts than trying to manipulate a hand held micrometer. I would recommend trying out several different models or micrometer before you buy if at all possible. As you noted, they can be very pricey, but deals can be found online if you are willing to purchase used tools. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

I found this one on ebay. They have them there from time to time. They can be pretty expensive though so don’t be afraid to negotiate the Buy it Now price.
