    I think having Zhao at Kyoshi Island was one of the necessary changes of condensing the series into eight episodes, because it seems like a lot of the episodes they’re most likely cutting- the waterbending scroll, the deserter- are the only episodes where he actually interacts with the gaang. If he’s going to be the big bad of the first season, they need to know who he is and fear him. They can’t just have him showing up at the very end of the Winter Solstice episode and then at the North Pole and leave Katara and Sokka asking “who the fuck was that guy?” Like Aang will get some screen time with him during the Blue Spirit and Zuko will be around him a lot more, but they might have just felt they needed one extra scene with Zhao to establish him as a threat before he KILLS THE MOON.

    • @Hannah-vt7lc
      @Hannah-vt7lc Před 4 měsíci +52

      I will be kinda sad that we won't have 'the deserter' if we go by the trailer. That episode had some nice plot points: the introduction of Jeong Jeong, Aang getting scared of learning fire because he hurt Katara, Katara figuring out she can heal.
      Plus we have the background of Zhao ad what his flaws are (impulsive and easily angered) and we see Aang using that knowledge to defeat him.
      Now that I am thinking, could be that they put Jeong Jeong at Kyoshi Island. I think combining those two plot lines could work.

    • @johnathancooper5753
      @johnathancooper5753 Před 4 měsíci +17

      Exactly! They still have to write a good story that makes sense to ones who never saw the animated series before, not just nostalgia for us fans.
      Hopefully the story is well written, but changes are to be expected with the adjusted formatting of 8 hour long episodes instead of 22 shorter ones.

    • @UZiBLASTER7
      @UZiBLASTER7 Před 4 měsíci +23

      @@Hannah-vt7lcLove that last idea, having Jeong Jeong at Kyoshi island. Maybe that’s why this time they stop at the island, because they find out about him. It could probably be the most efficient way to fuse the stories.

    • @YaGurlSunshine
      @YaGurlSunshine Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@Hannah-vt7lc I don’t thing they’ve cast Jeong Jeong yet, but maybe they could incorporate part of his story into book 3? I don’t know, I feel like Aang’s fear of firebending wasn’t that important overall to his character arc, but if they wanted to include it it could be just part of his trauma from losing his people to the Fire Nation. I know it kind of comes back when Zuko joins the gaang, but Aang did get over the fear with about three seconds of meditating.
      As much as I like Jeong Jeong, I don’t know how much would be lost by cutting his character in the long term, Iroh kind of matches most of his symbolic importance- a general who turned his back on the Fire Nation and later joins the white lotus and helps liberated Ba Sing Se- so like with cutting Bato or Haru (even if I still hope they include some of the story beats from Imprisoned for Katara’s sake, but it was her story not his that was important) IDK how much we’d lose from not including him, he doesn’t really effect the plot very much.
      Jet, The Mechanist and Suki are all secondary characters who have an impact on the plot so you have to keep them, but other characters I can understand the need to cut them out to tell a cleaner and more focused story.

    Actually I think Azula + bow scene could be used to highlight another trait of Azula’s - there’s actually quite a few things in the world she’s NOT good at, NOT a prodigy at. And her response to these imperfections is to rely on her status and the one prodigal skill she has (firebending) to elevate herself and compensate. See the flashback, where she can’t tolerate that Tai Lee is more acrobatic and pushes her over, or the massive fit she throws on Ember Island when she realizes she can’t socialize as well as her peers. There can be a scene where Azula tries archery, realizes she’s not as naturally good as she is at other things, and walks away in a huff saying that “princess of fire only needs fire, leave the mundane weaponry to people of lesser talents”.

    I don't know if they'll do it this way, but it'd be cool to see the Air Nomads fighting somewhat equally until the comet comes really close, and amplifies every firebender's fire. Like, imagine that trailer shot is Sozin blasting Gyatso, who's fending it off right as the screen goes red and Sozin's flame blooms into an inferno. Really hammer home the threat of the comet coming back around as clear as possible when we learn of it later, and establish it wasn't just ordinary firebenders that wiped out the mass majority of the Air Nomads.

      That’s a good point, the comet doesn’t last that long and showing what normal firebending looks like would help emphasize just how much more power the comet makes them. "The Look" you mentioned about Netflix shoes is also true of Amazon with Wheel of Time and Rings of Power and it's because the world doesn't look lived in. The most prominent example of this are the clothes. They are beautiful and perfectly bring the animation to life but for people travelling, and adventuring, and working the land there are NO rips, or tears, or errant stains, or sweat. This cleanilness can be forgiven in an animated show but not when you have to compare a live action show to the look at feel of real life

      I think this goes deeper than costuming and props, but to the CGI as well. All the CG look... Well like plastic. There are never any imperfections that a practical set would have. Making realistic CGI (or even artistically non-plastic-looking CGI) is not impossible, but lord knows these artists are under enough crunch that the slap-dash, corners cut version is all a Netflix or prime show will ever produce.

You will get a better idea of the show and the characters before forming misconstrued opinions. I won't spoil for you who the Blue Spirit is but it is clearly stated in the show later on.
      Please please please watch the animated series before starting unnecessary debates on a topic that is so clearly outlined in the plot of the original show.

      Sozin is probably just going to kill Gyatso but it might an interesting change if Sozin goes down to Gyatso sucking air out of the room. He died of old age in the OG show, but maybe they want to make him more of a martyr in the new timeline and give the guy who arguably is the real villain of the show an onscreen comeuppance. I'm a bit of a camera and filmmaking nerd although by no means an expert, but I can at least speculate about what makes the show look so clean and cheap. I think it's a combination of many factors: a lot of it seems to be greenscreen and lighting that is generally very bright and studio-like, leaving the characters a bit too perfectly illuminated to seem natural, and I'm not sure if the practical lighting colour always matches the CG environments. The clothing isn't weathered so looks less realistic and more like cheap costumes. They're using anamorphic lenses which have a very stylistic depth of field that works great in some cases but I don't think they're a good fit for Avatar. The trailer also has ridiculously many lens flares, which are a feature of anamorphic lenses although I think many lens flares in the trailer were digitally added in post. The colour grading is definitely very vibrant (which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in this case I don't think it looks particularly natural). I'm not entirely sure if they're using diffusion filters, (some highlights look like it but could also be a glow added in post) but if they are using diffusion filters, that would definitely be another factor that results in a very soft look.

      Some people are worried about the changes to the story, but judging by the trailer, this is what worries me the most. I feel like instead of making the necessary changes to properly adapt the aesthetics of the world to live action, they just tried to make it look exactly like the original. Which is a problem, because things that look good in a cartoon don't usually translate well to the visuals of a live action show.

    • @averylfong4843
      @averylfong4843 Před 4 měsíci +44

      Spot on. I went to school for theatre and studied wardrobe/costuming/hair and makeup and there is a surprising lack of weathering and aging on a lot of the clothes, shoes etc.
      You get blinded by shots of perfectly white fur trim on Sokka and Katara's clothes, something not attainable/maintainable with the level of technology where they live, and the rougher state their tribe is in. Even Aang's clothing has crisp cut edges and vibrant colours that don't seem faded or worn in the slightest, considering he's so mobile and only has the one set.
      Hair and makeup is generally pristine as well, which feels like a choice.
      No idea if this was deliberate decision to make the show appear "closer" to the original AKA cartoony? But it definitely pulls your brain into "this is not real" territory quite quickly.
      A good example of a TV show that uses aging/weathering techniques vs pristine, new clothes for character and story purposes is Good Omens. In that show, the angel Aziraphale is dressed in the same clothes that he's maintained carefully over millennia (still subject to wear and tear) vs the demon Crowley who "miracles" his outfits into being (brand new and perfect). It's subtle but it creates depth to the world that Avatar so far might be lacking? Just my two cents.

    I really wish they had done more with Zuko's scar. It's not supposed to be pretty or aesthetically pleasing like oh there's a little mark there. NO. It is a nasty burn scar. His skin is literally melted. Make it look ugly. In the cartoon Zuko did not have a left eyebrow, his skin was melted in such a way that he could not open his left eye fully, AND (one thing that is often overlooked) his left ear is also melted down.
    I also wish it was overall bigger and darker/more red. Because when you see him in the cartoon, his scar is the first thing you see. Its his defining physical trait. Re: moving the Mechanist storyline to Omashu. I can see a version of this story where Aang is enthusiastic about introducing his new friends to a favorite place that he's sure will always be the same, especially after seeing the devastation of the Southern Air Temple, only to be dismayed that the Mechanist is seemingly demolishing a place of living history. So Aang goes to complain to the King of Omashu - while Sokka hangs out with the Mechanist to learn about this cutting edge science - and after Aang's trials/duel, he realizes the King is Bumi himself. Aang demands to know why Bumi is allowing his city to be torn apart, and Bumi explains that to Aang, it seems like everything is changing overnight, but Bumi has lived these past hundred years and knows that society has to progress for the good of the people. Just because the Fire Nation is going about it the wrong way, using their advancements to conquer their neighbors, that doesn't mean everybody else should stubbornly live in the past. The episode can end with the Fire Nation rolling up and beginning a seige on Omashu, the initial wave which the Gaang helps fend off, then Bumi insists that the city will be fine and they have to move on. It's a bittersweet parting for Aang, victorious but with more pressure mounting for him to end the war - and for the audience as well, because we know the next time we see Omashu, it will also have succumbed to the Fire Nation.

It gives her a weapon, like Zuko has his swords, it is the kind of organization the perfectionist Azula would YEARN to excel in, it brings her into contact (and possible conflict) with Zhao, and easily integrates her into a cool part of the story that was just a cool part but wasn't as plot relevant.) It also lets the story show off that the Fire Lord trusts Zhao. He allows him to command a unit with his golden child daughter. It's a great place to put her where she can be plot relevant and not plot breaking. Aang might notice her. She gets to see the Blue Spirit . . . and maybe starts figuring out who might be behind that mask, a plot point that might come in later as Zuko and Azula clash.

    Just remembered that Azula _DID_ use a bow and arrow in the animated series....when she and Ty Lee were teasing Mai's crush on Zuko and she used Mai as target practice by sending a flaming arrow to the apple on her head and Zuko crashes into her trying to save her and they fall into the fountain. I think the mechanist change works very well.
    In the original show, the Fire Nation acquired the remains of the war balloon at the end of season 1 and it's not ever mentioned that the fire nation has air power now Up until the day of black sun. I don't think the mechanist will be the traitor, he may actually just work for Bumi and the earth kingdom and only switch sides in season 2 to insure his son's safety which should make us care way more about Omashu and its' people when season 2 rolls around.
    This change will also make Bumi's decision not to fight for Omashu a bit controversial among the fans, because in the show it was kinda treated as a joke. You know "Haha, Bumi's nuts and he's clearly got a plan". Here, his strategic retreat might effect the characters we knew and care about Theo and his dad

For S1, Zuko might just be the misunderstood bad boy who gets given a choice in the S1 finale and picks “evil guy” - especially if Azula is in the mix. The antagonist role moves neatly from Zhao to Zuko for S2 where we see him crawl back to redeem himself for S3.

I will say I’m absolutely still skeptical about the fight scenes. While it is a GIANT step up already from the movie. I think it still falls really short here. I haven’t done much research into the production of this series but IMO every actor or their stunt double needs to be trained in the martial art that their bending is based off of. The way to do bending fight scenes here would be to choreograph them as a hung gar (EB) vs tai chi (WB) fight scene first and then try to incorporate the bending into the choreography. And then once you’ve done that to film the final fight scene. Also, not a fan of Appa or momo, you gotta do what Mandalorian did, super hi tech animatronic dolls. But here just with the face of appa. Momo might have to be CGI though.

    I actually think it fits to have Zhao attack Kyoshi. At the South Pole, Zuko doesn't go out of his way to hurt anyone or destroy anything in his search for the Avatar. He only fights Sokka, if you can call him mostly just rebuffing his attacks fighting, and while he does throw fire at the villagers, it's also clearly over their heads and meant to scare them more than anything. The most aggressive he gets is when Aang is actually in front lf him, and he halts immediately when Aang bargains for the village's safety.
    To me, that establishes that Zuko is willing to be menacing to get what he wants, but doesn't go out of his way to hurt anyone. Zhao, on the other hand, is ruthless and I honestly believe him burning down a village more than I do Zuko, even while seeing him as a villain.
    I do hope as well that this doesn't neuter Zuko's villainy completely, but we also have to consider that Zhao will have less time before the Blue Spirit episode to be established as a secondary villain, and I think Kyoshi is a perfect setpiece for that. I imagine they'll have a shorter confrontation between him and Zuko to establish their race to find the Avatar, and then Zhao beats Zuko to Kyoshi, but that's just my speculation.

    6:29 I'm not so sure on how I feel about Azula using a bow and arrow. I kind of like the idea of her using it to complement Zuko's dual-sword style as you pointed out - however, the reason Zuko used swords in the first place was precisely to be good as something Azula wasn't. Beyond that, it was an act of reverence and admiration for those who lacked firebending, an inhereted legacy he was failing to live up to and thusly actively rejected for.
    Azula abused and thrived through a power freely bestowed upon her, Zuko went out of his was to respectfully learn and master an art of the common person. Until The Firebending Masters, Zuko's firebending is, like Azula's, a reflection of his dark legacy, whilst his sword-fighting is often aligned with his most truthful desires.
    I'm sad we're probably going to lose this in the live-action show. Yes, the bow and arrow fit Azula's personality, but I find it hard to think of a reason why she'd adopt a secondary weapon. Maybe the show will surprise me in that regard.

      Azula wanted to be the best at everything. She got upset when Ty Lee was better socially in The Beach episode, and when they were younger, she tripped Ty Lee out of jealousy for being able to cartwheel better.
      SHE has to be the best at everything! I can imagine them using these archery scenes to show her personality.
      Not saying they are doing this, BUT She already is a fire prodigy, you have to use a different style to show her being "lesser" in some way so she freaks out about it.

      @20000dino Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@johnathancooper5753 While that's the most plausible explanation I could imagine, I still have a hard time seeing it implemented in the show.
      Azula does want to be the best, but only at what will prove beneficial to herself and her goals. Good acrobatics are a great asset for any bender, and she's already incredible at it from a young age, so it makes sense she'd be jealous of Ty Lee, who's always been even better than her. When it comes to Ty Lee's social and romantic savviness (or maybe "social conditioning", judging from her advice), Azula feels jealous of her because, deep down, she desires to fit in and form connections (especially with people her age). She's always been heavily sheltered (if extremely privileged too) and conditioned to be the immaculate legacy to the royal family. Thus, she doesn't have her emotional needs truly met, which becomes evident when she completely unravels after losing Mai and Ty Lee.
      On the other hand, I cannot see why Azula would be jealous of Zuko's sword-fighting. She's always seen sword fighting as a lower from of combat, reducing it to mere "playing" in Zuko Alone, and calling out Zuko, a firebender, for "wasting all [his] time" with it. Furthermore, she constantly establishes herself as superior to him in a way she doesn't to anyone else, as she feels the need to consolidate herself as the only possible heir to the throne (an act she actively derives pleasure and confidence from). Thus, I cannot understand why she'd feel the need to learn to use a weapon, as she doesn't see it as an either useful or worthwhile pursuit, nor would she feel insecure about her brother doing it.

    • @johnathancooper5753
      @johnathancooper5753 Před 4 měsíci

      @20000dino I agree with your assessment of Azula's mindset. But swordfighting and archery are different fields.
      Also, Azula jealousy of Ty Lee's acrobatics was when they were children. And as teenagers, when we first see Ty Lee, Azula is mocking her "circus" job. So Azula "downplays" the importance of gymnastics years later because she is not as good at it. Maybe she is downplaying weapon training because Zuko was better at it. I'm not sure though. You can be right too, but we will see what they have planned.
      But from an advertising perspective, i am pretty sure they want to save her blue fire for when the show releases. So we keep getting these less active shots of Azula in the advertising so we can see her real abilities when the show comes out.

      @@johnathancooper5753 I already established that archery fits Azula's personality. Sword fighting and archery are, indeed, different fields - but that's not the point being discussed here. This isn't about how fitting to their character each type of weapon is, it's about how weaponry is perceived by benders, who wouldn't conventionally need it. I do stand by what I said - and, from the tone of her voice in Zuko Alone to the way they animated Zuko amateurishly using the knife, it seems like a huge stretch that Azula actually thought he was good at it.
      That point about Azula downplaying Ty Lee's acrobatics in their adolescence is definitely true, and something I forgot to mention. However, that doesn't really contradict anything I said about the subject, it's just fleshes out their dynamic more.
      I definitely think you're right about them using archery as a way to conceal Azula's blue fire for a but longer (as we're getting introduced to her much earlier on this time), which was my first thought when I saw it in the trailer. At the end of the day, all I'm doing is analyzing the show and voicing my worries about a strong aspect which might be lost in this new adaptation. For example, thats why the one movie which shall not be named has an appa that looks so creepy and off. I think one thing that could be better in the Appa here is his beautiful white coat!! Why dull it down? For example in season two when they do the lost days episode, his battered state HAS TO HAVE A REAL CONTRAST with his pure, fluffy and clean self the other times we see him.

    I’ve seen a lot of reactions and takes on this already but I must say out of all the ones I’ve seen so far you’ve got this universe down pat more than anyone

    I think the avatar state is going to be changed in so that whenever Aang enters it he will take on the appearance of a realized avatar like Kyoshi or Roku. And that he is unable to appear as himself in the avatar state because he's not yet a fully realized avatar. All the times we see him in the avatar state in the trailers I think are either when he is entering into it or leaving the avatar state

    My father and I have discussed the trailer CONSTANTLY over the last couple of days and this show was our bonding show when I was growing up and this is a 60yr old man freaking out alongside me with joy over the quality this show SEEMS to be giving us. 21 Episodes crammed info 10ep 1hr+ each is a BIG risk but we're ready!!!

    Thank you for breaking it down like that. I watched the trailer like 6 times trying to absorb as much from it as I could and your analysis was spot on. Thanks for the insights I will be looking out for your observations. So stoked about tomorrow's release!

    Pretty excited for this show like most people, worried about the lore/canon misinterpretation damage it will cause. also no Jeong Jeong.

    The Mechanist being in Omashu could actually work pretty well. Omashu gets captured by the Fire Nation in Season 2 because Bumi chose to do nothing. But in this Show the Mechanist could actually betray Bumi and the Earth Kingdom and be the reason why Omashu gets conquered or at the very least plays a role in the Fire Nations control/lack of Control/Bumi's imprionment instead of execution.

    I'm just hoping that writing will still be top-notch. I don't care if they smush some storylines together, as long as they do it well. I agree with Tim that we need to see Zuko as a villain first before we can see him as something else. He needs to earn that redemption arc.

      I think bumi can work despite his physical appearance if the actor pulls off a great performance

    I love the music! It is exactly like the one from the animated series and it brings back memories and emotions.. I wish they had grittier backgrounds where things look randomly crushed and thrown yogether instead of being artistically arranged into neat piles of debris (or jungle, or daily posessions...)

    I’m also noticing something about the bending effects. Not many understand or appreciate animating combat esp. martial arts (2d or 3d.)
    Just thinking of how the animators for Mortal Kombat put a lot of work into creating snappy movements at the end of the characters’ attacks. The difference between Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 is that the former had snappy movements animated to make us, the player, feel the impact of Sora’s attacks-he has the same moves in Kingdom Hearts 3, but they’re smoother which actually strips the motion of its aggression and snappiness.
    Look at whenever Hiroyuki Yamashita directs animation in Naruto. Every motion is animated with momentum to create a *punch* or bang any time an attack makes impact.
    That’s what went through my head watching Iroh and Sozin basically punch the air and then out comes a flamethrower. It lacks that snappiness that emphasizes impact.
