- The Wrong End of Time - Pt 1
Season 1 Episode 1
Aired date: Sep 28, 1970
Plot: The year is 1970. A young girl called Sarah is walking along the boundary of a disused naval base in St. Oswald beyond a sign which clearly says "Ministry of Defence. Keep Out" She stops as she hears a strange electronic noise. She wanders closer to the base and is seen by Tom Ferris, a farm labourer. Ferris calls out to her but she is mesmerised by the strange sound. She feels out to an invisible barrier that appears to be set between a series of redundant concrete fence posts... and suddenly vanishes into it! The labourer stumbles disbelievingly to the remains of the fence but finds nothing to credit what he has just witnessed save a discarded handkerchief
BEST children's TV series ever. Treated us as intelligent beings. Rivetting even now. Love it.
Better than Doctor Who?
@@ikarikiddoctor who great tv series 🎉
One of th'e best. Don't forget Catweazle, Dr. Who ('60's to 80's versions, the Tomorrow People, Follyfoot, etc. So many good shows back then. And yes, mostly British, even though I'm Austrailan (saw them on the ABC Australia).
This is surely the most grown up children's programme ever made.
This thrilled me as a teenager. And here I am, sixty-six novels later, still writing about time-travel!
Australia here, I remember this well from its initial (and only?) run on ABC TV back in the very early 1970s. I even still remember the music to this day.
This series was brilliant.
TV for kids that makes them think.
I loved it as a teenager.
I was hooked, the moment I discovered this series on YT. Watched all episodes in 6 days/nights. Give me 'Time Travel' stories any time. I love it!
Tomorrow's People might be a good one for you.
@@carolineg1872love the 70s tomorrow people it was a lot of fun to watch on a bootlegged website seen all 8 seasons 😊
@@carolineg1872 The original one was best. then they did a second series in England and another version in the U.S. I believe. I might be wrong of course, (I often am).
One of my TV highlights when I was a kid. Brilliant series!
This definitely brings back memories. I use to love this show as a child.
Some episodes were scary though, Especially the one where people aged really bad.
That fence as been in my head for the last 50 years. Never stopped thinking about it. As the coments below say The best childrens tv show. what I remember was it centres around the future 1990. hot and cold..
Me too - the scene of them going into straight from the Naval
Base in to the Antarctic is etched into my memory (I was 7 at the time).
I bailed half way through the '1990' series, when Devereux was cryogenically frozen. Still hiding behind the sofa in 2020.
Wow what a coincidence! I havent seen this since it probably first aired in 1970 or shortly thereafter (I would of been 6 or 7 years old) and still remember it. In fact I was just thinking about it few days ago and wondering what it was called!
This series should have been prime time. A superb plot with lots of surprises. Faultless! ( except when the adults "fluff their lines" ) . Mind you, these grown ups can't be trusted.
As a Yank, it’s delightful to find all these kick ass UK sci-fi series. And I’m someone ( as a Yank) who knows more than my fellow Americans about this genre specific to the UK. But damn me if I don’t keep finding stuff I’ve never heard of before.
Haven't seen this programme in forty six years. The production values may look
quaint today, but the story is still very eerie.
Thanks for posting it.
watched this in 2005 when i was 10, re watching now, its amazing
This is a very deep show, well ahead of its time!!!!!
I was eight at the time. I loved this show. Spencer Banks and - bugger, I forget! Thanks for posting!
thank you for posting this - a childhood memory for me
I remember this but I thought it was in colour when I watched it. It was around when I was watching the Double Deckers, Great after school entertainment.
It was made and broadcast in colour. For reasons I explained in a reply to a comment above, the original colour master videotapes no longer exist, so only the black and white film copies of those videotapes that were made for international distribution survive (only one episode survives on its original colour videotape master).
it started off in black and white but went colour after few episodes
I used to have these episodes on VHS video for a long time. A great series, good cast and some interesting moral questions.
Whats VHS?
I've just binge watched the whole series (took about a fortnight). I used to love it back in the day. It's still well worth watching now. Devereaux is still a rather scary character!
where did you watch it ? Thanks
The tension of Quatermass you can feel here in this serial, thx for upload it great.
a wonderful scifi serial about the dangerous of technocracy and how the 2 kids find themselves charged with saving the world from destruction: a gem
Indeed. It's a small masterpiece of a children's serial.
I loved this as a kid. I remember the intensely creepy music score.
Thank you for posting, legions of us like this stuff, unlike one sad buggar...
I'd totally forgotten about this series. Watched it as a kid. Happy you posted it up. Thanks!.
Not seen this episode since first broadcast. Great to see. I'll be watching the rest of the series for sure.
Many thanks for uploading this long lost series from my childhood. My passionate interest in the paranormal, occult and it's ties to certain clandestine military activities has led me to remember this series. I'm convinced the writers may have had some information filtered down to them. Look into the Skinwalker Ranch and Truth Proof RAF Bempton phenomenon.
wow i watched this aged 7 am going to enjoy watching this whole series again been looking for it for many yrs but forgot what it was called and i just happened across it now thumbs ☝
My god I remember watching this in junior school. and I remember Peter Fairly, ITV's science correspondent at the time. Thank you for uploading flx6 m23
I remember watching this when I was four. I absolutely loved it, but could never rember the name of it. Thanks so much for sharing this x.
Thanks for uploading this marvellous series. Yes, it may not have been made with the kind of big production budget of today's children's dramas, but I don't think that detracts from the story one bit.
Indeed. Even if its special effects and sets are rudimentary my modern standards, there's an intimate dramatic strength to it that's timeless. It's amazingly well-acted, directed and (despite the occasional hole in plot logic due to time travel elements) the writing is so strong its surprising and wonderful. It's a beloved cult classic, and I can see why.
Here here
@@DrMoorehen hear hear... 👍
I just loved this. It is way before it's time, if you pardon the unintended pun.
Excellent stuff
Absolutely love this series. So creative and ahead of its "Time". Very grateful and appreciative for your posting of these episodes. You have made my day an exciting and outstanding one indeed. All my best to You! Much Thanks and Best wishes to you and yours. ✌❤😊
Thank You for posting this
Well the GR8 thing is BigFinish.com is releasing a new official AudioDrama series this month (May20) that continues the original television series. I’ve heard the 1st episode & it sounds fantastic. Its why I came looking to watch the TV series :)
What Peter Farley nearly blurted out ''but it's very close to what we are actually planning to do to you in the future''!
Never seen these but always wanted to so thanks for posting them!
thanks its still great to see as it was when i was a. little girl.
I still remember this series and I haven't seen it since it was first shown.
Great tv series 🎉
I HAD TO POST THIS! ! ! I lived in England for almost two years and I felt I was a Londoner at the time.
But I was already 24 years old. Suddenly, during my researches on CZcams,I felt I was missing the TV ads and the Television of the sixties. But it sank on me:I`VE NEVER BEEN TO ENGLAND AT THE SIXTIES,nor as a kid. So I started getting curious about how TV shows and ads looked at that time, while asking myself if,while I was a kid...I possibly made some sort of astral projection and went to England before...so I decided to see how was the British 60`s and the first video that appeared on the search " TV and ads 60`s"was this. To my complete shock, listen to what the presenter says:
I'm sure I watched it when it was on TV. I was 5 in 1970.
I remember a woman walking through and then reappearing as a very old scary woman, plus someone 🤥 ng on the floor struggling and being sucked in. That's all I remember, pretty sure it was this program. And I remember we all watched it and thought it was brilliantly scary.
Never knew this. Thank you. Great show. Love from Greece.
Moral of the story:never let go of your beer.
Thanks for posting!
Thank you for the upload.
The future General von Klinkerhoffen (Hilary Minster) in a minor role as a German sailor. Early typecasting, lol.
Thanks for this, if you do not mind, I will add to my page in my 1970`s Sci-fi shows playlist.
Thanks to Dr.Who I had a tendency to explore all these sorts of programs & by & large "enjoy" them all. :)
Fantastic stuff
I KNEW it!!! Time travel is real. Woody Harrelson lookin good.
Hi thanks for the great share just a correction it wasnt The BBC but atv who produced this x
I watched it all in a few days. Fantastic. I was too young back then I suppose. The music scared me and it was all too confusing. Now however?!...... and as for Cheryl? Man, what I could've done with her!
There were some quality kids show back in the day. I loved this. I also liked Ace of wands. Don't make an like this any more.
The boy with glasses looks like a young Richard osman.
Too bad there's not more .
I would have liked to see how the kids save Dear Ol Da .
Comedy gold!
I believe the original colour master tapes were wiped and re-used in the late 70s so this is a telecine copy that was made when the series was sold to Australia, New Zealand or possibly South Africa. None of these countries would broadcast in colour for several more years hence why a B&W telecine was deemed sufficient.
IIRC the original colour tapes suffered a catastrophe; heat-damage or something like that. Only one colour episode survived.
Something you may not notice: during the credits for the season about runaway global warming, the plants become more wilted with each episode.
Very interesting. Not like most silly sci-fi children's shows.
A very young Catherine Zeta Jones ! Great series.
Graham Daw,was this really CZJ???,i had such a crush on the girl,Liz,when i was about 12.happy days.
Yes ! No doubt about it, that Catherine Zeta Jones in a early role. I think she changed her name when she turned pro some years later. gd
Glad i had good taste in women at such an early age.
It is not CZJ.
She was born in 1969. The show was first shown
in 1970.
Not Catherine Zeta-Jones. The actress is Cheryl Burfield, was a great show :-)
Oh my word. He said 'ruddy'.
marvelouuss !
Thank you for the feedback. Are the DVD in higher resolution than can be watched here on CZcams? I don't like it when video-materials shot in Black & White are colourised. But if any series deserves to be restored to colour its this one.
Do children get anything as good as this now? I have no idea.
Not any more - children's tv has gone in a different direction. "Timeslip" and its writers treated children more like adults, hence the quality of the scriptwriting and the acting. Nowadays kids tv is quite simplified, probably to cater for shorter attention spans...
And Sandor Elès is waring the uniform insignia of a Kapitän zür See.
Crikey, this was required viewing in 1970, I was particularly upset when the Germans shot the girl in a later episode. Bastards. Interesting that kids T.V. was filmed in black and white then. Catweazle was in colour though...
Jules Hammond Spoiler Alert! I wasn't born when this was aired and love all things time travel. I really enjoyed this first episode but, kinda wish I'd not read the comments. My own fault!
MobiusVideo Apologies, that was thoughtless of me! Hope you enjoy the other episodes despite my error!
Dear Jules Hammond, I believe the series was made in colour until a 'strke' occurred which left all but 1 episode in B&W. The 2nd story 'The time of the Ice Box' Ep 6 is in full colour. Many of us hoped and still hope a full colour version will one day be released as technology improves. Enjoy the rest of the series, it still holds up today !
Thanks for the additional information. I must confess that in 1970 my family owned a B&W TV and that is the format I watched it in. Actually, from a nostalgic stance I quite like it like that! Best wishes.
Yes there was a colour technicians strike on BBC & ITV from Nov 1970 to Feb 1971 which affected all programmes made during that time period. Some shows had the colour signal muted and shows like Dad's Army have been restored to colour but other had the signal switched off so the colour was lost forever.
Was there ever a scene where the female lead walked through a wall? My friend was inquiring about just such a Briish show.
This was an ITV show not BBC.
I think Cheryl Burfield was also Lizzie Dripping...very popular Beeb afternoon kids tv.
No she wasn't.
Could you please tell me which of the 26 episodes were produced in colour? I have heard contradictory things. Thanks. Are the DVDs in higher resolution? If so I will buy them if possible.
Apart from about 3 (which were subject to union action in a technician's dispute) they were all produced in colour.. However the colour masters are all missing, believed damaged or wiped except ep 12. What else survives seen here are B/W export prints.
this is not colored series maybe i forget about this show
3 freaky times in my life I was riding in a work van with a bunch of other guys and the morning radio had a contest they play a song backwards for 5 seconds i got 8 out of 10 songs right everyone was looking at me. Another time I had a Nightmare my wife was siting on a guys lap talking on the phone his hands all over her she was having a laugh. That was not a nightmare it did happen the guy in my dream was her lover I only saw him in my dream but I discribed him exactly. The third time I was in a Nuke power plant as a guild threw the work site I had FBI clearance to lead works in the plant I was walking with my group and I stopped and said take care there is a bucket of water and a mop around the blind corner this is the first time I was in the plant I was right the plant guard with us reported me I was questioned but nothing came of it no one found any proof I had been there before the thing was that bucket and mop should not have been there they said
I kicked it up to 1.25 times the normal speed in order to make it watchable, and it still moved at a glacial pace. Clearly they felt they needed to kill time, but the amount of dead space and near-backward story momentum here is extreme. It was like watching DARK SHADOWS on quaaludes.
Michael Moricz well sorry things didn’t go as fast-paced as they do now...
frank skinner...hmmmmm,ive heard that name before.
It all looks so dated and amateurish these days, and to think I you to sit glued to the screenwatching this back then. Oh, by the way, can anyone tell me where I have seen the girl inthe show, her face looks very familiar.
Gary Dunn I'm pretty sure this was refilmed in colour in the mid 1970s. It's quite slow
@@nigelsheppard2953 No it wasn't. They repeated it in 1973/74 as someone further up the thread said. And yes, it's slow but good.
haha, theyll be back for supper.....theyre not babies.
Do they still make UK programs for kids at teatime? I thought they had stopped years ago because they thought it too expensive.
It was a golden age for children's TV, we had the likes of Timeslip, Mandog, The Changes, Children of the Stones, UFO, Ace of Wands, The Tomorrow People. If you were a pre-teen or early teenager at the time you'll remember all these with great fondness.
@@markpurcell8075 Timeslip and UFO are great. The others a bit less so.
Not bad, they made it way too easy for the Germans, the Naval Sentry wouldn't have had a big bush blocking his view allowing the Germans to sneak up, and there would have been at least two of them, let alone more Naval guards around the fence!
Hi.could anybody help me I left Uk in 1964,and there was a science fiction series called "out of this world" I think is it correct?
Yes.
Never liked it or understood it at the time. Now i can see it was a masterclass of writing, only let down by that stupid TV Technicians strike showing it in Monochrome.
The German language is dreadfully pronounced in this series.
Greetings from Germany 😂
I remember Peter Fairley. He could make the banal seem banal.
His reports on NASA were an aid to sleep.
Unwatchable! Who directed this? Yoko Ono?
Then why not watch something else instead of taking the time to watch then whine?
this is just terrible
