It had to happen sooner or later… after 150,000 miles (71,000 of which I have done in five years while visiting 11 different countries!), the M96 flat six engine on my Porsche 911 has needed to come out for some much needed maintenance. Here's what happened! A HUGE thanks to the guys at Wrightune for taking care of the car, for all Porsche servicing, maintenance and mechanical restoration work give Chris a call or visit www.wrightune.co.uk/

The cost is the cost, it's an old 911 with 150k miles on it. The memories it's given all its owners in over twenty years, just think of it were a lesser manufactured brand, it would be made into a dishwasher by now and little Irish is still perfectly usable as a modern classic 911. Nice to see the dedication Lee.

225.000km on my 1997 996; four engines. First original engine blown up due to hard track use by earlier owner, second AT replacement short block had a disastrous rebuild with misaligned heads due to a uneven block, a mechanic that shredded some threads in one of the heads and figured it was ok to use helical insert threads and two component glue etc etc. Third engine was then a rebuild of the second disaster that lasted maybe a month until that ended up in a total intermix disaster. 12 months later the car got a factory new 2021 stamped long block (block, heads all internals) all auxiliary components replaced etc. Purrs like a cat now. While I did have that engine swap I bought a factory rebuild and zeroed G96 manual gearbox, installed the Numeric shifter and cables. Like you said the 996.1 base Carrera is absolutely the most Porsche 911 driving and ownership pleasure for any money. Hope to see you on the roads of Norway this spring/summer.

AOS, Y-cable, clean and cali the injectors, coils, and plugs, IMSB, clutch, pressure plate, pressure bearing, RMS, watter pump .... I think you have a new expansioin tank already, new aux-belt. YOu might want to renew starter motor. If your cats are original the insulations are done. Tensioners. And really I would do also the cam chain sliders. And do the boroscope now. ... any starter motor problem can also be Y-cable problem.

Leaking of the IMS bearing is not an indicator for a failing one. It will fail for sure even without leaking.
Did you ever cut your engine oil filter open to check for excessive wear?
If the engine is out it makes absolutely sense to change the IMS and also check for bore scoring on these M96 (non Mezger) engines.

Bosch are not what they used to be. Many German brands have reduced the quality of their products to compete with high quality Indian and Chinese parts. Same thing with Tyres, there is no difference in quality between good Chinese tyres and expensive Michelin, but you will pay a lot more for the branded items. Even new Porsche cars are not built to the same standard as the earlier cars were. Your 996 is better built than a new 992.

@@9WERKSTV well, that can be a slippery slope. With how you use the car, there best answer is regular deep cleaning. There are clear protective coatings, but to do it most effectively, you would really need to disassemble and clean/treat each piece, and that's not likely to happen for most of us. I'm certainly in that camp. I want to keep stuff together and drive the car as much as possible.

Any engine out as here is absolute minimum £3k+, the cost varying wildly according to a number of factors:
      - How easy the engine comes apart (bolts shearing off etc)
      - Labour rate of your chosen specialist
      - Cost of replacement parts used (OEM v cheap knock-off etc).
Hence the reason my cost isn't included, because it's not going to be relevant to the very next car on the ramp.
