Wheelchair Rugby was invented in 1977 by a group of Canadian quadriplegic athletes, who were looking for an alternative to Wheelchair Basketball that would allow players with reduced arm and hand function to participate on equal terms. The sport they created, which incorporates some elements of Basketball, Handball and Ice Hockey, has since grown into a thrilling and intense spectacle, and is enormously popular with Paralympic spectators around the world.

The name really doesn't seem accurate to the activity - this is a sport in it's own right and any links to rugby are tenuous and best.

Stephen Walker it's called rugby because it's the only full contact wheelchair sport and they couldn't market the original name murderball.

The best sport ever, at the best Games ever. My wife watched 14 hours solid rugby one day while I was working (Gamesmaker); I finished my shift in time to join her and see GB beat Sweden. Magic.

they should do this except for regular olympics. so its a bunch of regular, fully functional people in wheelchairs but if you get out of your chair it's a foul. and if you get out of your chair and fight it's an ejection.

This was awesome watching! I have Hydrocephalus, and at the age of 9 I suffered from a stroke due to the pressure in my brain being so high. After that, I spent nearly 2 years In wheelchair, before I was slowly able to regain the use of my left leg after several months of both physical and occupational therapy. I had to depend on a walker for a few years after that, even to walk at home. I still have to use the walker today, but only when I go somewhere that requires me to walk a long distance. I owe all of my thanks to GOD, because I know that I wouldn't be here sharing my story with you now if GOD didn't intervene. I don't understand why HE chose to save me, but I'm thankful that HE did. Praise be to our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ! I pray for anyone that may be dealing with the trials of life, that our LORD Jesus Christ be with you and comfort you. GOD Bless each and every one of you. Amen.
