I like that despite seemingly a know it all, Reacher still consistently have blind spots. Especially when it comes to empathizing with others, he didn’t know about Finlays wife in s1, and didn’t know this cops dad and his backstory either.

Something about Reacher I've noticed is that he's so used to dumbasses messing with him that he's developed a bit of an ego. So the moment he is dealing with an opponent that actually is competent he caught flat footed.

The level of human emotion in the prior scene had me in the verge of tears. And I just love Russo’s character. The way he kneeled down to speak with the boy…it’s like he was speaking to his younger self. Kudos to the actor portraying him.

Russo was a great character that I really appreciated. Could have gone the route of "modernizing" his appearance and mannerisms for social brownie points, but instead went with the traditional depiction of what you might assume to be a dirty cop these days, and turns out he's one of the most standup guys in the city.

Neagley said that Reacher only goes off of facts and attempts to make the logical conclusion from what he has even if the conclusion is not a positive one

Just finished watching this episode. It's poor, average, full of all that over-wrought over -emotional American bullsh*t and the script is really bad. The previous episodes in this series were't that great but this one made me shout at the screen. The previous series humour seems to have gone and the Reacher character is becoming cliched with Richson just going through the motions. The scene at the funeral acted between Reacher and the cop made me cringe. Then the action sequence after was just another shoot n chase on foot with a gazillion bullets fired and only one person got hit. Then a car chase that was poorly filmed. Whenever there's a suggestion that one of Reachers ex army pals may be a crook we get a close up of Richson looking pained. Honestly, it's that bad.
It's a shame because the books avoided all that - this is just another averagely made and acted American action repetition of all too many other shows.

Yeah I understand your criticism and perspective. To a large degree the extent you mentioned you are right. It's a unfortunate trend many people tolerate too much over perfect progression these days. Since how bad shows and productions have gotten and people have slowly became desensitized about other levels of badness that make story structure sense when it comes to judging aesthetics they have become more tolerant of oversaturated lukewarm drama scenes like this when they grew tired of the other extremes.
It's a bit of ashame really. It's a compromise people don't realize they have truthfully made. It goes to show how warp our foundation of tenents can become when we are not ever vigilant when faced against the worse dichotomies.
We accidentally become indifferent to the smaller detracting elements such as these overly polarizing scenes too much.

Some people can call me a fool for it if they intend to but I won't be conforming to their expectations all the time.
