I wish Carlos and Dex would have been people who you help like Viola and Kiki. Would have made more sense than to throw in Shakespeare and Vlad the Impaler. With Dane Vogel and the DeWinter sisters, you already had some of the characters you'd met in the series. Everyone is DEAD, which would mean everyone you met, everyone you fought, every ally you had was there in Hell... complete and utter missed opportunity to not bring ANY character back. Troy, Tobias, and Luz "appear" but as husks with not a single line of dialogue among them, which again is yet another instance of missed opportunities. A wealth of dead characters after the destruction of earth and they shift their focus AWAY from them, which even as a newer fan (SRIV was my first time really playing any of the games, then I played em in reverse like a dingus) I knew it was stupid that these old characters were neglected in a haze of sloppy writing. Dex should have been featured more highly as a main character in Gat out of Hell, Carlos has a lot of people who miss his character and would love to see him come back-- taking on satan with old allies would have at least given old fans closure and given new fans reason to go and play the older titles. I've enjoyed all of the games (Well, barring SR1... really couldn't get past how painfully it felt like playing GTA3 again), most of em play great-- but the writing started suffering at 3 and completely fell apart in 4.
The original sr1 ending with Julius not the culprit sounded so much more cooler. If time travel is ever invented, I'm definitely going back to make sure those asshats do their jobs.
Are you serious? In my opinion this was the truest to a character Saints Row ever managed to be. What Flippy didn't mention in these videos is that the devs came up with a pretty good reason why Julius killed off the player (even if it wasn't even supposed to happen): He founded the Saints to end the other gangs, because he felt those were tearing Stilwster apart. As that progressed, he saw how much damage this was doing to the city (in 2, he states he'd been seeing the saints turn into the vice kings), and so he planned to end gang violence by ending all gangs, even his own one. I'm not sure if and when Julius knew Troy was a cop, but Troy probably gladly accepted to disband the gang, using it for his own career between 1 and 2. Dex seems to have had no problems with it either, but that's never really explained. Gat was a psychopath with a gun, but more peaceful (!) than one other character: the player, a ruthless murder-machine and most likely the reason why Julius wanted the Saints disbanded in the first place. He couldn't let the player get away, he'd just set up a new gang. The player had to be killed, no way around it.
+SonTyp OhneNamen while I do agree with you and feel that the reason why Julius betrayed the player does make sense, I like to think that if the original ending was canon and made part of the game, that the games following would have stayed true to the original gangster vibe and theme, instead of being about aliens and superpowers and shit.

Everything seemed to be going exactly to his plan, then all of a sudden he jumps to that to 'I've gotta take him out'. Granted how the player is 'meant' to be is better portrayed in SR2 and if like that, yes Julius has a case but that's the problem when you use a mute, but how a character like that ended up in the situation they were in when saved by Julius and Troy to begin with makes even less sense. Ultimately what does Julius even achieve by trying to kill the player off? Within 2 years the same stuff happens all over again. I think Troy understood that which is why he was angry with Julius for trying to kill the player. Troy understood that somebody had to rule and figured it was better being the Saints then anyone else, which is why he backed them in 1 and indirectly backed them in 2 and is still helping them by 3. Both Troy and Dex were robbed pretty badly of story if you ask me.

Same. The boss didn't make stupid one liners and annoy me. That and the boss from SR2 clearly shows why they are the boss and is clearly an intimidating individual who is not to be messed with. The other Saints respected the boss and followed him for a reason. In SR3 and beyond, he's a goofy clown who no one respects or fears. They only follow the boss at that point because it's just how things are. Your fellow Saints dont even really respect you at this point. Kinzie even asks Johnny right in front of you why he isn't in charge in SR4. Plus the sudden attitude change from bad ass to goofy kind of threw me off.
Considering Saints Row 1 was something akin to a clone, moreso than an original idea, it's strange that it still caught me quite well. For all of it's similarities to GTA, I did find the interactions with the Saints and the overall approach rather interesting. Then you get Saints Row 2, what I'd say is a crowning achievement on something fun and ludicrous, but also intriguing and compelling. It felt missions had context, they matched story beats and didn't feel like a bundle of stock ideas. Something I honestly felt with Saints Row 3. It was ludicrous, but then you realised half the game was building off of side activities. It was silly ideas threaded together afterward. And I think Dex really sums that up. I don't think Saints Row 2 did a bad job. The Julius mission, the fact that it was hidden, was nuts. It felt shady, dark and very real. Very much how it SHOULD feel. Then we get... this? THIS?! "oh dex he i and the stillwater explode dead okay." It's lazy, hamfisted and lame. Not compelling, not memorable and not worth the trouble. Better to leave it unfulfilled than to pull this if I'm honest. They had a perfect setup for a third game. But by this (Fifth?) iteration, they may aswell have not bothered.
Flippy Dude, you nailed it though. Loved my time with both games, especially 2. SR3 was... fun? But it just didn't stay with me. I STILL haven't picked up SR4. It sounds like a cool idea, but man... SR3 and Gat HURT. HURT.

I'm a new school fan. The first Saints Row game I played was 3. But I loved it so much that I went all out to buy an Xbox 360 and one of the last two BRAND NEW copies of Saints Row 1 left in Australia. I care about the Dex saga. I was disappointed with how the handled Dex in Gat out of Hell. Actually, I was disappoint with Gat out of Hell in general. Flying around is awesome and all, but there's no story missions and all we get are repeatative side games with a poorly structured story built around it. I hope Saints Row 5 is more thought out.
I'm not a "new school" or an "old school" Saints Row fan. My story is that I played the original Saints Row at my friends house in 2008 when his brother had a Xbox 360 for a little while. I fell in love with it right away, as I thought it was a cooler and more open-ended version of the 3D-Era Grand Theft Auto games. However, I have always been a PlayStation guy, and so I never played the original Saints Row ever again (which leaves me broken to this day). However, I got Saints Row 2 that same year for Christmas. The amount of love I have for that game is impossible to describe. It has helped me get through so many tough times, even to this day. Naturally, when Saints Row: The Third was announced, I pre-ordered it right away. I loved it when I played through it the first time, but after I beat it and saw how aimless it was after the story ended, I realized how much the gameplay was lacking. Needless to say, I thought this game was the weak point of the series for a while. Oh, and shoutout to the shitty DLC for that game. Fuck you for stealing my money. Then, when I saw Saints Row IV, I was initially disgusted. I didn't end up getting it until the National Treasure Edition came out in 2014. Then I played it, and I fell in love. It's my second favorite Saints Row game behind Saints Row 2; it's innovative, fun, and hilarious (although the aimlessness is still there). Then there's Saints Row: Gat out of Hell. This game can be summarized in one word: terrible. The environment is fantastic and beautiful at times, and the flying mechanic is awesome. Everything else, well, for lack of a better word, sucks. The humor is shit, the story is shit (probably because it's non-existent), the graphics are shit, and the activities are boring after two hours (even though the devs expect you to spend 20+ hours on them to get 100% completion). Remember when I said Saints Row: The Third was the weak point? Nope, not any more. I don't know what to think about this series any more. Chances are they're gonna look at the statistics and see which Gat out of Hell ending the players chose the most. From what I saw, a lot *spoiler* *spoiler* *spoiler* chose the Cop Ending, which is fucking stupid. I chose the Find a New Planet Ending, and I'm not the ruler of the series, but I think it should be the true ending. Imagine the Saints Row 2-style story of claiming territory, but with the style and substance of Saints Row IV. This is probably the longest comment ever to be posted on CZcams, but I thought that if I needed to share my opinion, it would have to be on Flippy's channel. I love Saints Row for it's world and amazing characters. I love how complex these characters are like Julius and the Boss. Saints Row 2 developed the Boss further then just being a psychopath. I remember seeing an interview Angry Joe had with the developer of Saints Row and how the interviewee loves the aimless direction three went with. On how Saints Row 2 took it self too seriously and how "fun" trumps all. I disagree, Saints Row always existed where the extreme was possible but know when to pull it self back to reality. Sure you can dress up as a clown and devalue property of a corporate conglomerate that wishes to gentrified a city to control it and running illegal genetic experiments with a septic truck. At the same time it knew when to hit the player with it's darkest moments like mercy killing Carlos. This not only shows that the Boss is more than a psychopath, who cares about his friends(especially with Carlos as a big sis/bro little bro relationship). It also showed that there is a price to pay for greed. Benjamin king told the player that this lifestyle is a constant struggle and there is always someone looking to take what you have. This showed that the stakes were high and since the player can literally tank everything that the gangs and police of Stilwater can through at it. They have to hurt by taking what matters the most to you. This also plays in the final scene of SR3 after Cyrus, but like the video said they simply did nothing with it. Sr3 robbed me of my revenge, which should have been the main focal point of three. I can see laser guns being in a Saints Row game because it fits well. It also make sense in its narrative, because S.T.A.G is a counter crime unit that is employed by the government that uses extreme force. Of course they would get a state of the art experimental weaponry to combat the Saints. Who knows they could in turn use against the populace for "disobedience". Again they did nothing with the dystopian sci-fi themes that they build on from the second game. I want to fight Dex in an all out dog fight on the VTOL in the Stilwater skyline and have a climatic conclusion with a dildo saber fight. Which the main character is reflecting on their actions up on to that point. People that say Saints Row 3 and 4 help branch out from being GTA clone make me laugh. They are saying that because in SR 1 & 2 you can steal cars and have the criminal element. Which three still had by the way. Mercenaries had both of those elements too, does that make it a GTA clone? Tl;dr: Saints Row was awesome when it was in the middle. Not too serious and not too wacky, just grounded.
They fucked up their own story. That's funny. At this point though I'm not surprised that they took the cheapest way out. I love Volition but goddamn they cut more corners than any other dev I've seen besides EA. Wouldn't be the first time that they pulled this either. Remember Killbane? Remember how in the canon ending you left him behind to go save the Saints? I thought for sure that the first mission of IV would tie that line up at least but no, instead we got Cyrus for some reason. Then he becomes a major point for Kinzie out of left field because reasons that aren't fully explained. There are so many things that this series as a whole does right and wrong at the same time it's mind boggling and I can't help but feel conflicted. It has some incredibly strong writing and character moments built up around some fantastic gameplay segments. My time freezing opponents and stomping them to bits in IV felt so satisfying, my time dual wielding SMGs and blowing away enemy gangs in SR2 was intense. My time kicking the shit out of Genki and getting 100k out of it was a rush, and all of that worked so well. At the same time there are so many story bits that fall apart, and that's worse especially when you have solid characters. Some of it is bad writing, some of it is lazy design, some of it is a combo of the two. For Saints V, the whole team needs to sit down and seriously think about what they are doing. No more lazy cop-outs. You have solid writing, it was at its best in IV, but please buff out the dents and make a whole story, not threads that won't be fixed or if they are it's done in the most backhanded way. For the gameplay, and I know I'm in the minority here, but keep the super-powers. You've finally found a flavor of your own that isn't a GTA clone. You've differentiated yourself, so going back would feel like..well, going backwards basically.
To be honest... After finding out that the entire series after saints row 1 direction was because of lazy programming was probably the most hopeless and tramatizing thing to learn I just can't look at the other saintsrows anymore without knowing it's not the original direction....

@@DarkSlimeGod The algorithm guides me here. I agree the writing wasn't as bad in SR4 as it could have been. The dialogue between the homies is very solid and there's no 'real' major plotholes. However many people can't see beyond the surface level of the silliness that SR4 has relatively to the sensibleness of SR1-2. I understand that but yeah, there's still some substance under all the flash and super powers of 4. I don't think the writing was necessarily 'better' in 4, certainly not anything to do with the main plot, but it's nowhere near as bad as most would think.
The fact that we could have continued the 3rd street saints with Julius and the other just blows my mind ! That one mistake with the ending turned this franchise into something different and not in a good way. They had such a good mix of characters and personalities, and it could have been something great. Instead we get half-assed gangs (excluding 1& maybe 2) no longer being about a gang anymore, with superman himself and fucking time travel .
Saints Row 2 was awesome. For the time, there was so much for you to do. The story was actually compelling and the characters and tone was fun. I wish if they do a proper saints row sequel it take place after SR2. Or at least give us a full remaster of SR2!!!
The concept of hell, could've been much more. Bring back all the old characters (which was interesting in Dane's return, and Dex's flop of 1) and have it be another game. They literally could've brought back the entire cast if you think about it. Hell, gangs, etc. yeah, not too many noble characters in this game.

I think the "Gryphon's not who you think he is" line is directly answered in the very next mission, where Gryphon orders you to kill seemingly random pedestrians to take advantage of the Boss's blind rage, by telling him/her that the pedestrians work for Dex. So i dont think Gryphon was ever part of anything bigger, he's just a psychopath who wanted to amuse himself with murder, and the Boss is completely oblivious to it. For all we know, Gryphon could have been the founder of Super Ethical Reality Climax. Dex simply became a rich asshole and escaped, its the Boss's fault for being gullible towards Gryphon that he couldn't confront Dex. Of course i think SR3 should have addressed Dex at some point, but i don't think they ever intended a major story arc.
I never played SR1 cause I didn't have a console, but SR2 was my introduction to the series. That game is sooooo fucking good. I played it only a couple months before SR3 came out. By the time SR3 had come out, I was like, the hugest fan of the series. I had enough money left in my budget to buy one game. I chose SR3 over Skyrim, which came out within days of it. I feel like a fucking idiot. SR3 was a joke at the expense of the fans. SR4 was a good game that had nothing to do with what I thought SR was supposed to be about and I'm not even bothering with SR:GOoH. My fondest wish for this series is we get "Saint's Row Part 3, the real one!" Where the boss wakes up from the worst acid trip ever where they became superstars and got abducted by aliens and shit. And then they actually do something with the game worthy of our intelligence! That won't happen, but a girl can dream.
Sorry girl, Honestly if Volition hired just one of their old saints row fans for a reboot, they might actually be able to unfuck themselves but... like this reviewer said, their lazy and their heart just isn't it, the series is lost. Sr1 and 2 are the best, 3 is... fun for what it is, and I didn't even bother with 4 and gooh cuz i saw the direction they were heading. Every true fan of the old SR will forever be waiting for the REAL Sr3.
7:29 Does anyone have the actual timeline of events of this game? Even the Wikia itself doesnt know what's going on. Hell, supposedly SR2 takes place in 2011 and SRTT/4 in 2016, according to it. Which sounds absurd tbh, since SR2 feels like the mid-late 2000's and SR3 "feels" like 2011.

I played it young too but that was a few months before the 3rd came out. Hell in 13 now and I still boot up my 360 since PC version sucks to play SR 1 and 2.
I didnt even knew much about Dex when i played Gat Outta Hell and found him,but i knew he was important cause you hear about him on Saints Row 2,and that was the only old Saints i played,HOWEVER i thought: "how would i feel if i cared about this caracter and he was putted like this?I guess not very happy,i bet an old fan is probably angry right now" AND I WAS RIGHT.
The whole idea of the Boss and presidency kind of immediately killed SR4 for me, thankfully I avoided everything beyond 3. 3 Was bad enough with minimal customization, but 4 was even worse. I wanted to play Saints Row when I tried it from a friend, not some shitty 3rd party DC Universe.
+Moses Cen Don't forget how lifeless of a city there was in Saints Row 3, the same pedestrians all throughout the map (In SR2 pedestrians changed as you were going through different parts of the city), lack of a good story, lack of good gangs (if you can even call them gangs). The list goes on.

SR 2 is one of my favorite games of all time (and I haven't even been playing it for more than a year) but that it came to existence is just a fluke? But how? They really cared to make SR1 a good game, with all the research they made. I. fuck. Flippy, I can totally see why they don't (seem) to care. Glad to see you're back Flip. The first SR I played was 3, but because of your vids I'm now currently playing 1 (which I'm rather enjoying) and looking everywhere I can for 2. Heck, this series is one of the reasons I bought a 360. I haven't played Gat out of Hell yet, but I'm kind of disappointed that this is how they decided to close out the Dex storyline. Hopefully SR5 will see the return of a more serious storyline, while still retaining the craziness that separates it from GTA.
I quit Saint's Row after the Third one and I saw which direction they were taking the series. Seeing how they handled Dex and the whole "Julius was supposed to be running away" bit has kind of made me sick. What the hell have they done?
I just want a rerelease of the first two games that I can play properly. I liked how the second one started more grounded, but it runs to fast for my laptop, and turning up the graphics to slow the frame rate, only creates the opposite problem. I've tried every setting, even tried the way that you can get your system to basically emulate older versions of Windows, because I really wanted to play it, but nothing worked. And if they are going to continue, they need to make the ending where Johnny resets the universe canon, and keep things grounded this time. So that escalation doesn't become a problem.

I'm not even surprised at the reboot anymore and the decisions the devs are making. Ffs
I wish Carlos and Dex would have been people who you help like Viola and Kiki. Would have made more sense than to throw in Shakespeare and Vlad the Impaler. With Dane Vogel and the DeWinter sisters, you already had some of the characters you'd met in the series. Everyone is DEAD, which would mean everyone you met, everyone you fought, every ally you had was there in Hell... complete and utter missed opportunity to not bring ANY character back. Troy, Tobias, and Luz "appear" but as husks with not a single line of dialogue among them, which again is yet another instance of missed opportunities. A wealth of dead characters after the destruction of earth and they shift their focus AWAY from them, which even as a newer fan (SRIV was my first time really playing any of the games, then I played em in reverse like a dingus) I knew it was stupid that these old characters were neglected in a haze of sloppy writing.
Dex should have been featured more highly as a main character in Gat out of Hell, Carlos has a lot of people who miss his character and would love to see him come back-- taking on satan with old allies would have at least given old fans closure and given new fans reason to go and play the older titles.
I've enjoyed all of the games (Well, barring SR1... really couldn't get past how painfully it felt like playing GTA3 again), most of em play great-- but the writing started suffering at 3 and completely fell apart in 4.

Are you serious? In my opinion this was the truest to a character Saints Row ever managed to be.
What Flippy didn't mention in these videos is that the devs came up with a pretty good reason why Julius killed off the player (even if it wasn't even supposed to happen):
He founded the Saints to end the other gangs, because he felt those were tearing Stilwster apart. As that progressed, he saw how much damage this was doing to the city (in 2, he states he'd been seeing the saints turn into the vice kings), and so he planned to end gang violence by ending all gangs, even his own one.
I'm not sure if and when Julius knew Troy was a cop, but Troy probably gladly accepted to disband the gang, using it for his own career between 1 and 2.
Dex seems to have had no problems with it either, but that's never really explained.
Gat was a psychopath with a gun, but more peaceful (!) than one other character: the player, a ruthless murder-machine and most likely the reason why Julius wanted the Saints disbanded in the first place.
He couldn't let the player get away, he'd just set up a new gang. The player had to be killed, no way around it.
+SonTyp OhneNamen while I do agree with you and feel that the reason why Julius betrayed the player does make sense, I like to think that if the original ending was canon and made part of the game, that the games following would have stayed true to the original gangster vibe and theme, instead of being about aliens and superpowers and shit.

Everything seemed to be going exactly to his plan, then all of a sudden he jumps to that to 'I've gotta take him out'. Granted how the player is 'meant' to be is better portrayed in SR2 and if like that, yes Julius has a case but that's the problem when you use a mute, but how a character like that ended up in the situation they were in when saved by Julius and Troy to begin with makes even less sense.
Ultimately what does Julius even achieve by trying to kill the player off? Within 2 years the same stuff happens all over again. I think Troy understood that which is why he was angry with Julius for trying to kill the player. Troy understood that somebody had to rule and figured it was better being the Saints then anyone else, which is why he backed them in 1 and indirectly backed them in 2 and is still helping them by 3.
Both Troy and Dex were robbed pretty badly of story if you ask me.

Same. The boss didn't make stupid one liners and annoy me. That and the boss from SR2 clearly shows why they are the boss and is clearly an intimidating individual who is not to be messed with. The other Saints respected the boss and followed him for a reason. In SR3 and beyond, he's a goofy clown who no one respects or fears. They only follow the boss at that point because it's just how things are. Your fellow Saints dont even really respect you at this point. Kinzie even asks Johnny right in front of you why he isn't in charge in SR4.
Plus the sudden attitude change from bad ass to goofy kind of threw me off.

Considering Saints Row 1 was something akin to a clone, moreso than an original idea, it's strange that it still caught me quite well. For all of it's similarities to GTA, I did find the interactions with the Saints and the overall approach rather interesting. Then you get Saints Row 2, what I'd say is a crowning achievement on something fun and ludicrous, but also intriguing and compelling. It felt missions had context, they matched story beats and didn't feel like a bundle of stock ideas. Something I honestly felt with Saints Row 3. It was ludicrous, but then you realised half the game was building off of side activities. It was silly ideas threaded together afterward.
And I think Dex really sums that up. I don't think Saints Row 2 did a bad job. The Julius mission, the fact that it was hidden, was nuts. It felt shady, dark and very real. Very much how it SHOULD feel. Then we get... this? THIS?!

I seriously hope that they just REDO the entire series starting from Saints Row 2. After that it seemed like they stopped caring about whether or not the story made any lick of sense. Make it like the Boss had a huge drug trip and imagined the entire thing, including the heist from the beginning of Saint's Row 3. When they do that, I hope they make the story make sense instead of everything escalating so fast like "Okay you're robbing a bank, but the bank is owned by a rival gang that was more prepared than you were. Oh and later on you become the president of the United States, but you get attacked by aliens that destroy the entire planet and you have to kill them for reasons. Oh! We almost forgot Gat and Kinzie go to literal Hell because Matt brought a Ouija board that teleported you there so you can kill Satan... and Dex."

I'm a new school fan. The first Saints Row game I played was 3. But I loved it so much that I went all out to buy an Xbox 360 and one of the last two BRAND NEW copies of Saints Row 1 left in Australia. I care about the Dex saga. I was disappointed with how the handled Dex in Gat out of Hell. Actually, I was disappoint with Gat out of Hell in general. Flying around is awesome and all, but there's no story missions and all we get are repeatative side games with a poorly structured story built around it. I hope Saints Row 5 is more thought out.

I'm not a "new school" or an "old school" Saints Row fan. My story is that I played the original Saints Row at my friends house in 2008 when his brother had a Xbox 360 for a little while. I fell in love with it right away, as I thought it was a cooler and more open-ended version of the 3D-Era Grand Theft Auto games. However, I have always been a PlayStation guy, and so I never played the original Saints Row ever again (which leaves me broken to this day). However, I got Saints Row 2 that same year for Christmas. The amount of love I have for that game is impossible to describe. It has helped me get through so many tough times, even to this day.
Naturally, when Saints Row: The Third was announced, I pre-ordered it right away. I loved it when I played through it the first time, but after I beat it and saw how aimless it was after the story ended, I realized how much the gameplay was lacking. Needless to say, I thought this game was the weak point of the series for a while. Oh, and shoutout to the shitty DLC for that game. Fuck you for stealing my money. Then, when I saw Saints Row IV, I was initially disgusted. I didn't end up getting it until the National Treasure Edition came out in 2014. Then I played it, and I fell in love. It's my second favorite Saints Row game behind Saints Row 2; it's innovative, fun, and hilarious (although the aimlessness is still there).
Then there's Saints Row: Gat out of Hell. This game can be summarized in one word: terrible. The environment is fantastic and beautiful at times, and the flying mechanic is awesome. Everything else, well, for lack of a better word, sucks. The humor is shit, the story is shit (probably because it's non-existent), the graphics are shit, and the activities are boring after two hours (even though the devs expect you to spend 20+ hours on them to get 100% completion). Remember when I said Saints Row: The Third was the weak point? Nope, not any more.
I don't know what to think about this series any more. Chances are they're gonna look at the statistics and see which Gat out of Hell ending the players chose the most. From what I saw, a lot *spoiler* *spoiler* *spoiler* chose the Cop Ending, which is fucking stupid. I chose the Find a New Planet Ending, and I'm not the ruler of the series, but I think it should be the true ending. Imagine the Saints Row 2-style story of claiming territory, but with the style and substance of Saints Row IV.
This is probably the longest comment ever to be posted on CZcams, but I thought that if I needed to share my opinion, it would have to be on Flippy's channel. Also, I couldn't do this on the official Saints Row website because it's so broken I can't login. Thanks for reading, if you did.

I love Saints Row for it's world and amazing characters. I love how complex these characters are like Julius and the Boss. Saints Row 2 developed the Boss further then just being a psychopath. I remember seeing an interview Angry Joe had with the developer of Saints Row and how the interviewee loves the aimless direction three went with. On how Saints Row 2 took it self too seriously and how "fun" trumps all. I disagree, Saints Row always existed where the extreme was possible but know when to pull it self back to reality. Sure you can dress up as a clown and devalue property of a corporate conglomerate that wishes to gentrified a city to control it and running illegal genetic experiments with a septic truck. At the same time it knew when to hit the player with it's darkest moments like mercy killing Carlos. This not only shows that the Boss is more than a psychopath, who cares about his friends(especially with Carlos as a big sis/bro little bro relationship). It also showed that there is a price to pay for greed. Benjamin king told the player that this lifestyle is a constant struggle and there is always someone looking to take what you have. This showed that the stakes were high and since the player can literally tank everything that the gangs and police of Stilwater can through at it. They have to hurt by taking what matters the most to you. This also plays in the final scene of SR3 after Cyrus, but like the video said they simply did nothing with it. Sr3 robbed me of my revenge, which should have been the main focal point of three. I can see laser guns being in a Saints Row game because it fits well. It also make sense in its narrative, because S.T.A.G is a counter crime unit that is employed by the government that uses extreme force. Of course they would get a state of the art experimental weaponry to combat the Saints. Who knows they could in turn use against the populace for "disobedience". Again they did nothing with the dystopian sci-fi themes that they build on from the second game. I want to fight Dex in an all out dog fight on the VTOL in the Stilwater skyline and have a climatic conclusion with a dildo saber fight. Which the main character is reflecting on their actions up on to that point. People that say Saints Row 3 and 4 help branch out from being GTA clone make me laugh. They are saying that because in SR 1 & 2 you can steal cars and have the criminal element. Which three still had by the way. Mercenaries had both of those elements too, does that make it a GTA clone?
Tl;dr: Saints Row was awesome when it was in the middle. Not too serious and not too wacky, just grounded.

They fucked up their own story. That's funny. At this point though I'm not surprised that they took the cheapest way out. I love Volition but goddamn they cut more corners than any other dev I've seen besides EA.
Wouldn't be the first time that they pulled this either. Remember Killbane? Remember how in the canon ending you left him behind to go save the Saints? I thought for sure that the first mission of IV would tie that line up at least but no, instead we got Cyrus for some reason. Then he becomes a major point for Kinzie out of left field because reasons that aren't fully explained.
There are so many things that this series as a whole does right and wrong at the same time it's mind boggling and I can't help but feel conflicted. It has some incredibly strong writing and character moments built up around some fantastic gameplay segments. My time freezing opponents and stomping them to bits in IV felt so satisfying, my time dual wielding SMGs and blowing away enemy gangs in SR2 was intense. My time kicking the shit out of Genki and getting 100k out of it was a rush, and all of that worked so well. At the same time there are so many story bits that fall apart, and that's worse especially when you have solid characters. Some of it is bad writing, some of it is lazy design, some of it is a combo of the two.
For Saints V, the whole team needs to sit down and seriously think about what they are doing. No more lazy cop-outs. You have solid writing, it was at its best in IV, but please buff out the dents and make a whole story, not threads that won't be fixed or if they are it's done in the most backhanded way. For the gameplay, and I know I'm in the minority here, but keep the super-powers. You've finally found a flavor of your own that isn't a GTA clone. You've differentiated yourself, so going back would feel like..well, going backwards basically.
To be honest... After finding out that the entire series after saints row 1 direction was because of lazy programming was probably the most hopeless and tramatizing thing to learn I just can't look at the other saintsrows anymore without knowing it's not the original direction....

@@DarkSlimeGod The algorithm guides me here. I agree the writing wasn't as bad in SR4 as it could have been. The dialogue between the homies is very solid and there's no 'real' major plotholes. However many people can't see beyond the surface level of the silliness that SR4 has relatively to the sensibleness of SR1-2. I understand that but yeah, there's still some substance under all the flash and super powers of 4. I don't think the writing was necessarily 'better' in 4, certainly not anything to do with the main plot, but it's nowhere near as bad as most would think.
The fact that we could have continued the 3rd street saints with Julius and the other just blows my mind !
That one mistake with the ending turned this franchise into something different and not in a good way.
They had such a good mix of characters and personalities, and it could have been something great. Instead we get half-assed gangs (excluding 1& maybe 2) no longer being about a gang anymore, with superman himself and fucking time travel .

Saints Row 2 was awesome. For the time, there was so much for you to do. The story was actually compelling and the characters and tone was fun. I wish if they do a proper saints row sequel it take place after SR2. Or at least give us a full remaster of SR2!!!
The concept of hell, could've been much more. Bring back all the old characters (which was interesting in Dane's return, and Dex's flop of 1) and have it be another game.
They literally could've brought back the entire cast if you think about it. Hell, gangs, etc. yeah, not too many noble characters in this game.

I think the "Gryphon's not who you think he is" line is directly answered in the very next mission, where Gryphon orders you to kill seemingly random pedestrians to take advantage of the Boss's blind rage, by telling him/her that the pedestrians work for Dex.
So i dont think Gryphon was ever part of anything bigger, he's just a psychopath who wanted to amuse himself with murder, and the Boss is completely oblivious to it. For all we know, Gryphon could have been the founder of Super Ethical Reality Climax.
Dex simply became a rich asshole and escaped, its the Boss's fault for being gullible towards Gryphon that he couldn't confront Dex.
Of course i think SR3 should have addressed Dex at some point, but i don't think they ever intended a major story arc.

I never played SR1 cause I didn't have a console, but SR2 was my introduction to the series. That game is sooooo fucking good. I played it only a couple months before SR3 came out. By the time SR3 had come out, I was like, the hugest fan of the series. I had enough money left in my budget to buy one game. I chose SR3 over Skyrim, which came out within days of it.
I feel like a fucking idiot. SR3 was a joke at the expense of the fans. SR4 was a good game that had nothing to do with what I thought SR was supposed to be about and I'm not even bothering with SR:GOoH.
My fondest wish for this series is we get "Saint's Row Part 3, the real one!" Where the boss wakes up from the worst acid trip ever where they became superstars and got abducted by aliens and shit. And then they actually do something with the game worthy of our intelligence!

Sorry girl, Honestly if Volition hired just one of their old saints row fans for a reboot, they might actually be able to unfuck themselves but... like this reviewer said, their lazy and their heart just isn't it, the series is lost. Sr1 and 2 are the best, 3 is... fun for what it is, and I didn't even bother with 4 and gooh cuz i saw the direction they were heading. Every true fan of the old SR will forever be waiting for the REAL Sr3.

Hell, supposedly SR2 takes place in 2011 and SRTT/4 in 2016, according to it. Which sounds absurd tbh, since SR2 feels like the mid-late 2000's and SR3 "feels" like 2011.

I didnt even knew much about Dex when i played Gat Outta Hell and found him,but i knew he was important cause you hear about him on Saints Row 2,and that was the only old Saints i played,HOWEVER i thought:
"how would i feel if i cared about this caracter and he was putted like this?I guess not very happy,i bet an old fan is probably angry right now" AND I WAS RIGHT.
The whole idea of the Boss and presidency kind of immediately killed SR4 for me, thankfully I avoided everything beyond 3. 3 Was bad enough with minimal customization, but 4 was even worse. I wanted to play Saints Row when I tried it from a friend, not some shitty 3rd party DC Universe.

+Moses Cen Don't forget how lifeless of a city there was in Saints Row 3, the same pedestrians all throughout the map (In SR2 pedestrians changed as you were going through different parts of the city), lack of a good story, lack of good gangs (if you can even call them gangs). The list goes on.

SR 2 is one of my favorite games of all time (and I haven't even been playing it for more than a year) but that it came to existence is just a fluke? But how? They really cared to make SR1 a good game, with all the research they made. I. fuck. Flippy, I can totally see why they don't (seem) to care. I knew that they weren't listening to the fans but not taking their own creations seriously it just... makes me sad and I honestly feel totally demoralized.
Glad to see you're back Flip. The first SR I played was 3, but because of your vids I'm now currently playing 1 (which I'm rather enjoying) and looking everywhere I can for 2. Heck, this series is one of the reasons I bought a 360. I haven't played Gat out of Hell yet, but I'm kind of disappointed that this is how they decided to close out the Dex storyline. Hopefully SR5 will see the return of a more serious storyline, while still retaining the craziness that separates it from GTA.
I quit Saint's Row after the Third one and I saw which direction they were taking the series. Seeing how they handled Dex and the whole "Julius was supposed to be running away" bit has kind of made me sick. What the hell have they done?

I just want a rerelease of the first two games that I can play properly. I liked how the second one started more grounded, but it runs to fast for my laptop, and turning up the graphics to slow the frame rate, only creates the opposite problem. I've tried every setting, even tried the way that you can get your system to basically emulate older versions of Windows, because I really wanted to play it, but nothing worked. And if they are going to continue, they need to make the ending where Johnny resets the universe canon, and keep things grounded this time. So that escalation doesn't become a problem.
