I look back at your work from way back and while I thoroughly adore that period, I have to say that your work nowadays is so bold, confident, and rich. You really represent the places you visit - even in the 15 minute sketch - with such immersion and care... it's really inspiring! The "Coast Colour" piece is just fantastic. Hi Mel, I loved to watch this wonderful video with many familiar places:). I really liked the autumnal colours. The gravestone is looking gorgeous with St. Michaels mount in the background. I saved this for my first (very gentle!) gym workout of the year. You kept me going beautifully, thanks Mel! So interesting that you seem to have spontaneously moved away from the Derwent palette to Kriksis’s custom tin; I guess sometimes our work is influenced by less conscious decisions which I never really thought about before! Also, your ceramic tray and coaster are gorgeous! They even sound lovely! Happy New Year! 🎉

Thankyou so much Melanie I really enjoyed the tour. I’m going to watch the others again just for the pure joy and relaxation of them. I’ve just returned from my final social gathering for the season and am planning a very low key and quiet New Year’s Eve with my partner and am inspired to start my new year with art and creativity. How wonderful to see your process and supplies for each season. Recently I have been thinking of adding different mediums to my watercolor sketches. Loved seeing the mixture of your palette.
Hello Melanie, it was very relaxing to watch this last video tour of 2023 thru your sketch prompts. Although I have a daily sketch practise, I don’t use prompts. But I may try prompts for January/February when life is very cold and muted here in Canada...sometimes its hard to feel interested in sketching anything when it's so dark...can't wait for snow to improve light levels!😊 Lovely to see the different seasonal palettes together. It's interesting to see how your choices changed thru the year.
Hope you got some snow and it's making your days a bit brighter!
I would love to see you paint larger canvases of your sketches if only to be able to step into those gorgeous Cornwall landscapes! Thank you for sharing your Autumn prompts! ❤

Your sketches are just beautiful! And I love the winter gouache colours, which is quite interesting because I really love vibrant, bold colours a lot. You mention that you were given the gouache tin, but you didn't say what kind (brand) of gouache it is. Not sure whether you were given the tin with the paints in it... England has such lovely scenery. We do here in Canada too, but there is just something restful about the English countryside (except, perhaps when the wind is blowing so hard that you barely open your car door)!
Thankyou! Kriksis I believe mixed them up for me so I do not know the exact colours or brands- it was a personalised gouache tin! Will ask her though as I have really enjoyed using them.

Loved seeing your color palette evolve! And I love that you didn’t restrict yourself to doing the prompts in the order presented. I love having prompts but sometimes I get stuck, I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to do the prompts when it made sense.
I'm so glad to hear, yes definitely do the prompts as you see them, it certainly helps to keep you going.

Thank you for sharing your sketchbook. Love your style and the way you use the mixed media on the pages. I’ve never used prompts but it’s a good idea to push myself to just play in my sketchbook more. 💜🙏

Wow Melanie! The winged horse and girl gravestone you found with that incredible view from the graveyard is magical! Here in the Seattle area I've never seen a gravestone like that, but I'm definitely going to keep an eye out now. I've been sketching a bit in 2023 and I was calling it urban sketching, however, I'm quickly learning that urban sketching is actually getting out and about as you do, and not so much sketching from photos as I have been doing. I love this tour from your sketchbook, your work is so inspiring and I wanted to say thank you for sharing your beautiful work. Happy New Year and many Blessings. P.S. Thankyou so much! That gravestone was a an unexpected treat to discover I don't think I've seen anything quite like it in a graveyard. Sketching on location has certainly improved my way of seeing and capturing things that a photo just doesn't do. Happy New year to you!

What were those gouache paints? I'd like to try gouache. I do find your sketchbook tours so interesting and peaceful. Jerry
Thanks Jerry. They were given me by Kriksis so I'm not entirely sure but Daler Rowney designer gouache sets would probably be fine and then mix your own colours.

Thank you for sharing this record of your life on the edge of the sea, Mel. I noticed a stack of photographs early on in the video, and wondered what kind of printer you are using for them? Is it a special phone printer, or are you cutting up formatted sheets from a regular one?
One advantage of having all four seasons is that the materials do overlap and sometimes repeat, so a sketcher doesn't have to go out and buy all new materials every time. They can supplement and exchange a few.
P.S. Really enjoyed your Domestika course, which I bought over the Black Friday weekend sale. I was surprised how much information you packed into it!
Thankyou! Yes those photos were bought from an online photo company I think called Inkfinity. I would like to get a small photo printer to connect with my phone as I think it would be very handy for workshops.
