Unlocking the Old Testament Part 25 - Ezra and Nehemiah 1

  • In looking at Ezra and Nehemiah, David Pawson gives the background of the 3 deportations which Israel had suffered under Assyria and Babylon, and the 3 returns to the land. Years earlier, Isaiah had prophesied that a man named Cyrus would release Israel from their captors and Cyrus, of Babylon, did just that though he did it for his own agenda. Apparently both being written by Ezra, these books record the rebuilding of the social life, of the religious life and of the physical wall and buildings, though the latter suffered threats and interruptions. Zerubbabel, of the Hebrew royal line, led the first return. Now Ezra, a priest, led the second and Nehemiah, a few years later, led the third. Each made an impact on a different aspect of Israeli life. Both books look at how the leaders went about rebuilding the state and reforming the people. The tragedy was that, though the earlier sin of the people had been the catalyst for losing their land, when they got back, they went back into sin. We see that Ezra was a “Bible man” - he studied it, he lived it and he taught it. What an example.

    I had never given any thought to the "order of worship" until David Pawson spoke about it and it stuck such a chord of logic with me that I wanted to agree whole-hearted with him ...Word of God, then Worship music, after receiving the word we should be in tune to proclaim the Greatness, Holiness, and LOve of our Majestic creator.

    8:23 Balaam the prophet prophesies the star that the wise men would follow
    28:01 Ezra setup a wooden stand in the marketplace for the reading of God's word
    29:01 have worship after the word!
    32:25 I feel like I should be doing the same thing!! Wish I knew what on ramp to take! Terribly frustrating-no denomination lines up w/ a person's honest biblically supported convictions so what seminary is one suppose to go to? What path are they suppose to take? It's nearly impossible to seemingly get a straight answer to those questions meanwhile millions die w/out God-its the paradox of paradoxes-I guess it's aog or something similar

    I have enjoyed this find. I wonder if Brother Dawson reads the comments.
    The reason some of us start with singing in services, is to fulfill the command: "Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His Courts with praise," from Psalm 100. I agree that this business of "working people up" is ill-conceived. It would also be good if the readings and preaching for the day were all coordinated as far as theme and content.
    Maybe a middle position would be to start with one song, and then transition to the Ezra model. Yet, the scriptures give us no evidence of the Ezra structure in New Covenant format. I would put greater weight on an explicit command from scripture, than an unverifiable tradition.
    I am thinking about Dawson's reasoning. He would use The Word to get us in the right frame of mind to sing. But I would use the music to get us into the right frame of mind to hear The Word. A multi-layered sandwich program seems best, with a fulfillment of Ps 100:4 coming first.
    Idea: opening with a song derived from The Scripture. Boom! Everybody wins.

      @kimchatwin-smith891 Před 7 lety +6

      I agree with David Pawson
      A simple prayer "Holy Spirit, anoint the ministry and give us ears to hear" is all we need, as the Holy Spirit will do the work in us.
      Milk is hearing the word - Meat is doing the word ... and this comes from knowing or position in Christ Jesus and praying/declaring/professing our faith daily by praying in the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues edifies the speaker. Unless we are edified to overflowing we are unable to minister effectively.
      Our personal prayer life should mean we are in a perpetual state of readiness to participate in worship. If we come to a meeting and 'need to warm-up' ... we are looking to take from the gathering rather than 'give praise to God'.
      God Bless

    • @DavidPawsonMinistry
      @DavidPawsonMinistry  Před 7 měsíci

      Interesting question …and no, the Bible does not explicitly say that. However - You need to read the book of Esther alongside Nehamiah ….. many scholars believe Artaxerxes was the Son of Esther’s husband (and infact some believe he was the son of both Esther and Xerxes).
      Unfortunately we can no longer ask David why he believed this to be true but there are sources of information outside the Bible eg the Jewish Talmud which is not considered scripture but is a well respected ancient Jewish document
      Here is one source I found you may find of interest to read

    Joseph married an egyptian, judah married a caaninite, moses married an ethiopian, and boaz married a moabite. Jesus lineage in matthew there are 4 women mentioned, they are gentile women. So marrying a jewish woman was started after coming back from babylon, probably some tradition of man they started and put it in their talmud.
