Few people could have anticipated the full implications of legalizing euthanasia in Canada. 7 years later, there are growing concerns about the expanding scope of euthanasia, the lack of protections for people experiencing vulnerability, and the long-term effects on the ethics of the medical system. As disturbing as these developments are, they point to a larger problem - a national crisis of meaning. Only faith provides an antidote to this cultural malaise. In this presentation, Deacon Larry Worthen will explain the recent evolution of euthanasia policy in Canada and its impact on human dignity. He will describe the role that churches can play in restoring the perceived value of every human life.
Deacon Larry Worthen is a graduate of Dalhousie Law School (1981) who had a career in management in the not-for-profit sector and Nova Scotia Department of Justice. He is a trained facilitator, adult educator and mediator. Larry is married to Dr. Linda Gagnon and resides in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He was ordained deacon for the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth in 2012. In May of 2013, he graduated from the Atlantic School of Theology with his MA in Theology and Religious Studies. His thesis outlines the role of proclamation in the New Evangelization. Larry and Linda have two children, six grandsons and two granddaughters.

    God bless you!
It has completely destroyed my family. What I witnessed at the palliative care unit where my father accepted MAID was pure evil. I did not stay for the crime, but everyone else accepted his choice (all devout Catholics). The worst part, I was told to not mention anything to the priest who would be conducting his funeral. I was rejected and shunned from assisting and participating to my own father’s funeral because I objected to MAID. The priest gave my father a full mass thinking he had died naturally….I was threaten by family and to this day suffer from great post traumatic stress from the whole situation.
I was mostly greatly disturbed by the lack of faith from my so called Catholic family. Many are not telling the priests the truth because they want an ordinary mass, my heart is destroyed beyond words. People are becoming lukewarm with the faith, all playing a facade. Our foundation is crumbling, praying for people to understand the gravity of such actions.
God’s grace and peace be with you 🕊️
