  • Doctor Who Episode 2, The Devil's Lost CHord was... interesting. By now, I don't expect this show to hold any substance and it just felt like a bizarre comedy albeit, with an interestingly familiar villain. #doctorwho

    I'm confused by this episode. The first episode showed any change in the past would immediately have an affect on Ruby. Not having music seems like this would change her and maybe even prevent her from meeting the doctor🤔😲

      I’m kinda on the fence with this villain. I have a soft spot for campy, scene chewing villains like professor Zaroff or Spaldy, or the Omega. I just hate RTD’s way of writing when it comes to who since RTD writes who like a common serial where the season builds up to a finale and have the finale be about the thing they constantly mentioned.

    Other people have pointed this out too but, the "devil's chord" is just a tritone, it's quite a common interval. It wasn't banned by the medieval church for being satanic, they just advised against using it cos it didn't sound very nice to them. Tritones were used a lot in music even as early as the Renaissance, so I think it's funny to imagine Jinks appearing every time someone played a diminished chord somewhere

    • @MoonPhantom
      @MoonPhantom Před 25 dny +24

      My favorite thing is that companion girl here started to play a song based around the tritone, and they needed to convince us it was beautiful... So they HAD to cover it up with the louder orchestre to mask that well... The tritone sounds bad! That's why we call it the devil's chord.
      You only use it when you want something to sound deliberately off-putting like in the Sweeney Todd musical, it is used semi-frequently.
      And I just kept thinking about this anime that came out early this year called. "Pluto." where there's a whole episode only about a composer trying to write a piano piece, and whenever HE plays, we ONLY hear the piano. And we get it because, that piece is beautiful and you get legit lost in it, and you only need the piano and a NICE arrangement to be swept away. If it's good you don't need a whole orchestre... it's there to mask how bad it sounds.

      @MoonPhantom Před 25 dny +3

      @@ayan5416 Well... The thing about Pluto is that it's based on "Astro Boy." which is a huge Japanese cultural milestone.
      And I can't tell you how good it is in its own right, because I was already into Astro Boy when I first watched it, so I understood what Astro Boy is and loved it.
      So to me... it was absolutely fantastic and a brilliant take on Astro Boy.
      But for someone who ISN'T familiar with Astro Boy... I have no idea how it holds up.
      That Piano episode though was really really good, it was breathtakingly beautiful and painstakingly sad, it's some of the best anime I have seen for a long time.
      And if you want to see something, that dares to go so slow, and has such a small little personal story that is just about two people and their interactions, giving you time to soak in the somberness, pain, and sadness of these two, and how they affect it other. How this little Piano piece is in the center to represent the feelings of the composer and his inability to finish because he can't face his own feelings of the past. And therefore can't see the beauty around him now. While his companion also desperate to escape the darkness of his memories is CLINGING to the beauty around him and wants to immerse himself with it so he doesn't have to remember.
      It is so good. You're very much drawn into it.
      I love it was such a small and personal story, that was allowed to breathe, that was allowed the time, we were allowed to just hear the piano while seeing breathtaking animated scenes from the composer's memories then torn up with war when he can't continue until it ends.
      So yeah as a standalone, stellar episode regardless of context.
      All the rest... again I liked it because I was already familiar with Astro Boy.
      How someone who is not familiar with Astro Boy will take to it... I have no clue.

The doctor fought gods, would-be-gods, the master, davros, wheeping angels, but then this entity shows up in reflections and he's saying we can't fight her. This feels like the lazy MCU writing where the dollar story versions of the original cast shows up, one-ups the established heroes, and the veteren heroes have to gas them up just because the writers didn't want to work for it. Its a shame to because you were right, this actor did the role very well for what it was written to be, but they needed to build up Maestro more.

      Here's my question. Since apparently in Britain they don't really need people's ratings, because people have to license to have TVs, what is your motivation for making good movies or shows? 😩 What's to stop them from making everything that's God awful because there's no motivation for them to make anything good? Unless people start getting all of their entertainment from overseas

      The BBC as it is funded by a licence fee doesn't rely on ratings so much. Most stuff is bloody awful. In the past it was "great the BBC is doing a new adaption of_______". Now it is crap the BBC will do a new abomination of________". ITV and Channel 4 etc are funded by adverts so need to get good ratings.

    Little note about the no-sound part of the episode, the Doctor likely used his weird ass sonic screwdriver to use some type of noise cancelation, which is a real thing. You basically use soundwaves that are of the opposite frequency to the soundwaves you want to cancel, which will meet and neutralize each other. It's like sending cold air in a room to remove the heat from that room.

Why would the Maestro, a personification of music, want to steal/end all music? Isn’t that just suicide? Also why do they want to end all life? Like the maestro comes as manic and somewhat jovial but at the same time they don’t want anyone to experience music. I think they forgot what made the toymaker so dangerous was the fact that everything was a game to him and he had to win.

    with the old timeline rules where retro-causality applies, he beat them all, but that takes a lot of future adventures to finish.
