  • In 1223, in Italy, St. Francis of Assisi created the very first Nativity scene as we know it, to inspire the local townspeople. Meant to mark the birth of Jesus, each crèche is an artistic expression of personal faith. Correspondent Nikki Battiste talks with professor Eric Barreto of the Princeton Theological Seminary about the history of Nativities, and visits the University of Dayton's Marian Library collection of Nativities from around the world. She also checks out a living Nativity scene in Mount Laurel, N.J.

In 2018, a local ward of the LDS church hosted a Nativity program over a weekend where people displayed their unusual Nativity sets made from wood, glass, wax, fabric. Also had entertainment, a couple of handbell choirs, and a choir from the LDS church as well as some other local churches, a high school and grade school chorus, and a men's a Cappella group who performed a dazzling rendition of "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas". So much beauty to behold! Happy Holidays to everyone! 🎄🕎

The Kid's Christmas pageant in our church this year was called "The Nightshift Before Christmas". It was set in a 50s style diner in Bethlehem the night of Jesus' birth. Later on Mary came on stage riding on a real pony. Joseph leading the pony. And later a manger set in front with Joseph and Mary and Jesus. Nice. With scriptures read throughout. - If you read your Bible though, the wisemen ( we don't know how many there were) didn't show up until Jesus was about two years old. And Jesus was probably born in the tower of the flocks, where the lambs for sacrifice were born. There would have been shepherds there. And sheep around.

For historical accuracy, of course, the wise men didn't arrive until Jesus was almost two. And we don't know how many wise men there were.

The fact that they would start this segment showing a woman who has 800 nativity sets gives me hope that someday CBS Sunday Morning will profile me and the 37 life-size statues of Elvis that I've made out of dryer lint soaked in corn starch.

I think he meant there's many misconceptions about the navity. Many navity sets show the Magi present at Jesus' birth. We know the Magi actually came sometime later.
