Fishing Line Cuts into Seal's Jaw

- A few big rescue nets were needed to catch this seal! He had been evading the OCN rescuers for a few weeks, but their persistence won. The seal was visibly injured by a piece of thin fishing line wrapped tightly around his jar. Because the entanglement was located around his mouth and one of the net's zippers was starting to open up, they had to capture him in a different net before they could get started. Once safely secured, the rescuers used surgical instruments to gently remove the entanglement from his mouth. The whole team was needed to ensure everyone's safety for this complicated but successful rescue. Well done, guys! 🦭

Seriously, I'm really glad they caught him. That horrible cut was probably making him ill-tempered as well as the ignominy of being caught twice by critters that didn't even have decent flippers.
The OCN team breaks all the rules: they run with scissors and they're the only ones who look cool wearing fanny packs.

Recent videos have been quite intense rescues. They clearly demonstrate just how committed you are to keeping the seals healthy and free of all these horrible entanglements.

The nets they use to catch the seals are wonderfully designed. I’ve wondered if the nets are designed for something else or this team designed them and have them specially made.

The rest of the seals are like, "Oh man they took down Big Jim, I'm getting out of here!" You guys are really getting to be professionals at this now. Worst case scenario - bad entanglements and injuries inside a very large seals mouth and you got it done and everyone knows the risk with a large seal like this is always there. Well done all, that was something to watch.

I'm glad you don't come across many entanglements like this one, but you totally have the strategy down now. It was much easier and faster than the previous rescue you referred to (CZcams video posted on 1 May 2021, "Graphic Seal Rescue--Uncut Version" from July 2020). And this seal was much more cooperative! Well done, guys! Thank you so much for your determination, your persistence, and most of all, your hard work! 🦭👏🙏❤❤❤❤

The last big bull rescue you had that took forever, you can tell you learned a lot from it. I could see the lessons carried forward in this, you got ahead of everything. Nice work guys!!
Another rescue perfect executed. I wonder how many seal community around the world have similar entanglement problems but no one looking for them. You guys are an inspiration to everyone and I hope you can generate (and occasionally to traine) other people around the globe to try to help these amazing animals and others that also may need help.
time for companies producing fishing lines and plastic that entangles animals to consider using material that dissolves in the water after a while. humans also need to reevaluate how much fish they really need to eat and how much lies they tell about the "need" for animal food on their plate, when scientifically it is already proven that animal foods are not even healthy. the food industry can make more money by converting to plant based food, but the corporate world rather keeps on lying to themselves and push their old outdated eating habits and beliefs upon the world instead of making a positive change.

I like the innovative use of ropes to control these muscley ones. Holding down a 200kg seal is no small task!
This guy was also much more accommodating than Captain Hook was!
This is one of the most impressive operations that your group has ever performed, in my opinion. Stellar job!
Another heart warming rescue. Have you considered using tie down/luggage straps? The ratchet means that they are easier to lock tight, the strap is broader so less likely to damage, the catch has a quick release.

The seal is very aware of it's size and power and knows exactly how to throw it around..... Almost like wrestling a crocodile at times, eh...? I commend your patience and dedication...! Thank you!
6:01 Easy fix for that knot. CZcams video called The Slipped Half Hitch shows that you fold the line in half instead of putting the end of the line through the loop (hitch). It leaves a piece of line hanging out for you to pull on to undo the knot. I use that knot all the time. So do those cowboys that tie the three calf legs together. You can practice on Densil if you can catch him. 😆👍

@@kareyreuben3869 Knots can be intimidating. Plus, most of the rescues are from lines with knots so, the optics of adding another knot might put people at unease. But, yes. It is a good safe fast knot. ✌
Poor seals they have a way of finding themselves in the most odd situations. On the other hand it keeps the team on their toes. You guys are turning into veterinarians aswell as removal experts.,
I think sea water is a possible antiseptic, a saline solution is good for cleaning a wound. I hope any cut or open injuries on these seals will repair quickly. 👍👍😊

Experience is a good teacher. Seeing how you learn from each seal is encouraging. The ropes are a great improvement to immobilize the seal.

Excellent planning & rescue by the team! The camaraderie is so funny and Naude has a new sport: sand skiing! It looks like OCN could use a bull sized net. Great that this rescue was easier than the other seal that had been visibly cut to the jaw bone by snoek line. Proper tools really help. Bravo on saving this big boy!

Very intense rescues two days in a row and this one demanded all your combined strength too. We could clearly see the deep cut on top of the nose when the seal charged out of the net afterwards. I'm very glad you were able to finally catch him and free him from that line. It must have made feeding difficult and painful for him. Great, great job, OCN and good idea using the surgical tools.
Oh fellas, that was another fraught catch and release. That bull was very strong and not a happy chap. Thank goodness you carry so many different tools in the truck and are kitted out for most entanglements.

Id say they have to be prepared because there are no vetinary resources to turn to nor any medicatation to enthusize them so preparation, strength, speed and determination save the day.

Rope around the body to hold the front flippers - looks like the knot might be an issue when releasing. You need one of those ratchet straps that don't have the actual ratchet. Pull to tighten and then press the button/lever to release.
Yes, that would even be better than what I suggested. Like a tie down ratchet straps they use for tying down equipment or loads down on the trailer. This would eliminate the need for trying to knot the ropes and be strong enough for these big strong bulls.
Suggest using a slippery half hitch through that clip hook.
Yeah when I saw that I said to myself that's gonna be hard to release. A better way would instead of going through the loop is to use another loop within the loop so it can just be pulled for an easy release.

Sometimes I can't tell if the degree of entanglement is getting worse for these seals it seems as though for the longest time eight out of ten rescues were simple entanglements and now it seems more and more and more that it is worse I hope not you guys are doing an excellent job you don't need anything extra to do thank you for what you do

Amazing, the power and strength of those creatures. Great job figuring out that process of capture and hold. The hemostats have made a great addition to your tools, and the bandage scissors will end up a safer option in situations around mouth, eyes and deep embeds. You guys are great!!! Can't imagine that poor seal with that line in its mouth for weeks.
