Some facts about busking:
1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver, one of the worst areas in all of North America. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020, came out of a depression in dec 2020, then had a serious brain aneurysm early April 2021. I’m lucky to be alive.
4) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
5) It's a lot of unpaid work to post these videos all the time so please try to help me keep the channel going. Many thanks to those that have supported me! It means a lot!
6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.
Anyone who has music work to offer can contact me at shatnershairpiece@yahoo.com. Do not send me your offers to sell your crap apps or software. It will go straight into the trash.
First day of busking season at the Vancouver seabus terminal. What better way to start than this classic from 1978. Nailing the Knopfler tone with fingers and Parker Mojo. Not a straight copy. I am improvising all over the place. Also, for the rabble that likes to scream 'clickbait!' in fury, mashing that thumb down button at lightning speed, how much did you pay to watch? I don't make a cent off youtube video, regardless how many views they get. Feel joy because your view sends more money to Mk, and we know he needs it more than I do. If the title offends you, please contact me and I will paypal you $25 for the rip off. Look at the publication date. This video has sat in the youtube toilet for FOUR YEARS with 47 views and all of a sudden started getting hits early 2021, so I would call that some mighty slow clickbait. If you mention the word ‘clickbait’ you will be banned and deleted.
If you actually take a title like this seriously, I have a bridge to sell you. If Knopfler's jaw is all you care about, then I suggest subbing to his channel and perhaps writing him for a photo of his jaw dropping, then you can hold it up to your face while you watch this video. If you get that easily upset at an unemployed busker who spent 48 years playing guitar, 15 years posting 1000 videos on youtube before even being seen, and busks for seven years on the most dangerous street in Canada, just put on your grinch costume full time and go step on some baby chicks.
I used to be in a band with this guy, was a fun experience we did some crazy eclectic instrumental versions of songs no one played in the first place, nice to see him getting props, great player

There's something seriously wrong when people like the Kardashians are famous and make millions and you get talented people like this man playing on the street.
I agree wholeheartedly.
The Kardashians, etc. are members of "The Club". They're put in front of the public to serve as "influencers" and push political agendas! As such, they are relentlessly promoted, whilst those of real talent so often remain unknown.

I have found that it is hard to get people's undivided attention unless they offer it willingly and knowingly. You can be one of the best players but unless you are extremely talented at drawing people in it can be difficult for them to even notice if they aren't on the same vibrational wave as you are.
I’d stop and be late even if I was in a rush. Somethings in life deserve this.
You have hit the nail on the head man .No problem
Sometimes you just have to stop and listen.
How can someone walk past what is the cleanest cover of Sultans of swing I've ever heard and not stop and listen
exactly what i was thinking
Idk maybe they got shit to do... or it's awkward like you know the dude wants money...or he might be playing that for 20 minutes... so when you stop you're his audience and if you want to leave you have to abruptly walk away... plus you can still hear it while you're walking so basically that is his audience. I'm sure he doesn't care
@@simonlinser8286yep I'm broke so no money to give him. I might hang around and pretend I'm waiting for someone though😂
The amazing thing is that he didn’t as much copy Sultans of Swing as he did completely channel Knopfler's style. Some was Knopfler, some original, but it was hard to tell where one ended and the other began. Absolutely fantastic.

Look forward to it!
I was in Art college with a girl who talked about her friend in Harlow College called Mark Knoffler who played blues guitar (not a name you would forget), it was years later that I heard ‘Sultans of Swing’ and then found out it was him playing.
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright

Ha ha! 🤪 Such wit! 🙄 mines obvious lyric references and thinks it’s cute or funny. Here’s a reality check. I don’t have a daytime job. Not doing all right. Live music and busking banned. Was not able to play at all last year, and very likely not this year either. Did not receive a cent of gov’t assistance for covid related job loss, while 15 year old French fry servers who worked part time and lived at home, all got paid $15,000. Very depressing year in 2020. So bad, could not even pick up the guitar for 8 months. Now, I finally start coming out of serious depression and this joke title video (which I had completely forgotten about) goes viral after sitting in the toilet for 4 years and 43 views, and I get hate for the title on top of it. then in April. 2021, I had a serious brain aneurysm and almost died. Win win! Also don’t make a cent off this video, or any of my videos on CZcams, no matter how many views they get. Video is monetized by Mark Knopfler’s record label. And we all know he needs the money.
I am a musician and a huge Dire straits fan , and that my friend was incredible !!! Kudos to you 😊👍

Dude, you have me applauding at full volume from my apartment at midnight. This interpretation of sultans would make knopfler blush. I can only dream that my playing will sound this good. Respect.

The guy put "His Own Stamp" on a timeless classic. Knopfler would have approved!
Runs home, grabs lawn chair, spends whole day watching this guy. Free concert!
A true artist, 'lost' in the joy of his endeavor. He is truly 'one' with his guitar.
Usually when street performers play this to make it "their own" they usually lose the sound of the original, but yours doesn't, nicely done!
This guy's talent is off the charts - can't believe people are walking by without stopping for a second and at least nodding in appreciation... is brilliance the new mundane now?
Not only do they not stop, some actually scream obscenities and tell me to shut up. I interfere with their ‘standing in the bus line’ time. Once, a guy screamed at me because he was trying to have a quiet smoke. I had one old guy on a bike pass me very day and call me an asshole. A woman waiting in the bus line told me to turn it down because she was stressed and considering suicide. I recommended she get therapy, ASAP.
@@shatnershairpiece Don't let a bunch of negative Nellies get you down! Great work, sir!
@@shatnershairpiece Is it Vancouver that is to blame? Never been there, just wondering...
No, selfishness is the norm now. No one gives a crap about anyone else. I remember a time when I thought a lot of people were cool. Now I never cone across anyone I imagine being a good friend. Well, I'm exaggerating a bit. This guy should be a successful musician unless he has some serious problems that make it impossible, like a bad drug problem or can't get out of bed before supper time. He could make a decent living as a studio musician, if nothing else. Maybe he just got out of jail and needs some quick cash until he gets hired. I wish him well whatever it is. He has the talent. I think he is no knoffler, but it's hard to judge from one CZcams video.
@@perrypelican9476 Given Knopfler is ranked 12th in Guitar World's all-time rankings, I wouldn't expect him to sound THAT good. I understand your point but people care about what they care about and that's showbusiness. Certain things bring in money because people are willing to stop what they are doing and pay for it. I say this as a guitarist myself so I have a huge amount of respect for this guy but no one has am obligation to stop what they are doing to watch him if they don't want to
@@jakemcs1095 If my comment implied obligation then I didn't word it well enough. There are not many who put a coin in the "hat" of the musician who tries to give people a little boost in their everyday life. Edit : A very skilled guitarist.
I was walking across lower Manhattan years ago and it was 25 degrees with snow falling and a blizzard coming. I heard a guy playing a banjo and stopped for a moment. I gave him $5 and said that I didn't have time to listen, but if he was playing in a snow storm then whatever he was playing was worth 5 bucks!
I never pass a street musician without putting something in the hat. I'm also usually the guy who claps in a restaurant after the first song I hear ends and the crowd is mute. Rarely do they suck, so people could at least acknowledge his or her existence up there. It means a lot to hear applause and not silence.
@@stephenwalsh2634 If I was going by I'd listen and contribute but that is Vancouver's Grand Central Station. Commuters coming down the valley, the Seabus from the North Shore terminal. Skytrain etc, etc, etc starts and ends right there. Taxis, buses too. Many commuters are busy getting to work in the heart of the city and don't have a lot of time. It is just what it is.
Fantastic performance. Slightly altered the original without losing its soul - 10/10
My cat jumped up and started rubbing her head against my phone that was playing this video.
She has great taste in music. 🙂
If I had no change in my pocket I would have walked to find a cash machine. THIS IS UNREAL!
thanks, you can always support through the tip link.
Ya notice he didn't get a dime !
C'mon people, show this guy some love, he's layin' it down cold!!
I don`t understand the people that just pass by without realizing how much talent is there, that piece of art is difficult and he played it really well!
thanks. check the link to the newer version. I like it much better.
I can't believe you'd walk right by a chalk artist and not watch them all day and give them all your money
@@edsnotgod - who said all your money? And also how many chalk artists do you know that can fill arenas, stadiums? That’s what i thought. This guy may not be playing stadiums but he could land a gig playing at a local music scene and then the crowd gets bigger so he’ll have to play bigger arenas. While the chalk artist, for all their talent, will remain just that, a chalk artist.
@@itslikethesamebutdifferent8020 you admonish passersby for daring not to stop, gawk and throw money. Maybe they just don't feel like it. Nobody is obliged to stop and listen to anything or anyone on street in a free country
"Everyone gets a prize for showing up"
@@edsnotgod - I’m not saying they have to stop and give anything but also don’t dismiss a talented musician as nothing of worth either. I know he is more talented than a lot of “everyday” people walking there.
I'm jealous of your fingerstyle. I've tried for years to get that knopfler feel going, and to this day it's one of the few areas of guitar that I never could master.
English picking is very difficult to master.
agreed. i recently came upon dire straits and i went to learn sultans of swing. spent 7 hours and then realized knopfler didn’t use a pick. another 6 and i kind of almost have it
Man, this Video is pure Gold!
Sultans of swing is one of my all time favourite songs ever. I came across this completely random a week ago and I watch it before sleep every night since them. I’m feeling your guitarplay badly! And I love how you really live the song while you play it.
Damn this is just awesome!
Greetings from Germany
Please just keep it up
A very creative version of Sultans. SWEET!!
Let me tell you something, this week I flew from Germany to Vancouver and walked around the city. It happened that I saw you playing here. That was such a nice moment, since I didn’t even know that this is van (first time here). Just felt a moment like seeing a childhood idol. Thank you for playing so nice and keeping it up, man you rock!
cool. I’ve been out a lot this year, another month and I’m done.
Where I live you'd never have the opportunity to hear a musician on the street. I don't understand all the people who walk by as if nothing is happening. I'd have to stop and tap my foot and hang out for a while. And give him all my cash!
thanks! City people are mostly apathetic these days, too busy or too distracted to listen. You can support or tip on my bandcamp page where I have all my original guitar music. I make nothing off CZcams. thesixmilliondollarguitar.bandcamp.com/
@@shatnershairpiece Cellphones have created a tsunami of narcissists, the tech device is the new nicotine.
Having absolutely no musical talent myself I greatly appreciate those who do. How sad people are rushing by. I would've been stopped in my tracks unable to move while my ears had orgasms. Bravo.
Are all these people in such a damn hurry to get somewhere? Stop and enjoy this man's beautiful rendition of a wonderful song. Love it. Excellent job sir.
As a guitar player myself of 15 years. I appreciate how well you've mastered fingerpicking. Simply amazing!
That guitar is singing! This was brilliant.
Absolutely BRILLIANT first class.
According to my mom, if I was fussing as a wee one this song would instantly cheer me up. To this day, it makes me smile! Beautiful rendition, sir!!!! ✨💗✨
Happy to join! Wishing you all the best!!!!
Love that!
There is no way in hell that I would be able to walk past this without stopping to hear the whole rendition. Epic performance mate
Amazed at how many people just walking by not even acknowledging his mastery and talent we are a busy lot aren't we . And so tight not many giving anything so sad
Thanks! You can help support this channel by checking the description links for patreon, PayPal tip, and band camp, where you can download 15 years worth of my original music. I’m still banned from Busking and I make no money from CZcams videos.
I'd throw my wallet in , there's nothing in it but I'd throw it in. Do you accept PayPal?
That's coz Dire Straits are shite!
That's exactly what this song is about.
Guy walks by with little kid. Kid stops and looks at dad, "I can't believe we are going to walk by without giving that guy some coin!"
Dad hands kid pocketful of change 😁👍

Yes I loved that, he's sick of Ariana Grande.
That’s the bread and butter of buskers
I would have given this guy half of my total pay check to keep this guy there.

Jimi said it best "Music, sweet music drops from my fingers!"
I don't care what the video title is. This guy really knows his stuff. When I see him in my recommended list, I stop what I'm doing and listen. He is ALWAYS worth a few minutes of my time!
Thanks for not hating me. I get enough hate on the street as it is.
I have to admit I was dubious when I saw the video title, but you sir, won me over big time. An absolutely great cover! Wish I had been there. Thank you for sharing and rock on!
I love watching the facial expressions and body movements of musicians who really know how to play and feel it from their toes right on up. Very enjoyable to watch. One of my fav songs too. Brothers in Arms was one of the best albums ever.
I never understand that talented individuals like this chap are out of work.
sign of the times. music clubs all closed, people don’t care about live music anymore, guitar out of fashion.
Amazjng. As a lifelong Knopfler, Dire Straits van i have never heard Sultans played like that. Can you imagine a duet between Mark and this Guy. Great
Not to mention his honest defense of the video and title! And His title of course, is the title of the song! He made it his own.
I can imagine Mark would let him play rhythm, but no way he's getting the solo, not even Clapton is given that privilege.
that’s because I would totally outplay him. many people prefer my versions over MK. this version is so so. have much better takes on CZcams.
Wouldn’t it be great if Mark Khopfler walked by and saw this wonderful musician the ultimate tribute !
That's what I thought the caption implied🤷🏼♂️
@@whatthehaps implied??? it is click bait. dishonest.
lol! I work one of the roughest streets in the world for seven years. The dishonesty part is not really hurting me. Wake up. All CZcams works on clickbait. please buy a sense of humour.
IM humble opinion, this raw version magic. The other version, I bow down to, but you are on the edge of your seat more, your inner personal voice just comes out in a really cool way in this version bro. Thank you for your killer talent!
Edge of my seat is right. It feels like being in the eye of a hurricane. You can't hear what's actually happening by listening to this audio. It sounds like I'm in a nice quiet and cozy bubble but it's the opposite. This is an audio recording in front of the amp and not what I actually hear. I am surrounded by vagrants, bums, addicts, screaming, car horns, sirens, smog, buses, people running into me or my bag. My spidey sense is on high alert even in the middle of solo. It's amazing I can produce any coherent music at all in this madness.
@@shatnershairpiece Damn, that sounds awful! Why don't you use headphones, then?
@@gerhardvaneeden5615 That would prevent me from hearing the danger. I need to be aware at all times as I can be hit from all sides.
@@shatnershairpiece Thanks for the answer 👍
If I could ask another, please. What would be hitting you? Is it specifically related to crime?
And let me also just add that it makes your playing even more impressive. Keep it up, sir!
@@gerhardvaneeden5615 vagrants, addicts, street psychos hit me, and steal my money. have gotten into fights, had drunks arrested, been shoulderchecked, idiots running into me while running for the bus, idiot joggers running into me, drunks stand next to me and sing, old men on bikes will ride past and yell “shut up asshole!”, and bus line passengers will actually poke me and tell me to stop playing.
I don't know how you could walk past this talented man, and not put something in his guitar case.
Magnificient skill, effort, technique and composition. So strange many people pass empty handed. So rare they could ever hear this music on street.
If there’s busking of this quality going on then for me there’s nothing that’s so important that it can’t wait while I listen to a few tunes.
This is one of the few good things to come out of this strange time. People are turning to alternative means of entertainment and in doing so, are discovering awesome new talent!
“Toss a coin to your busker, Vancouver of plenty...”
Never have had the opportunity to see someone this good on the street tearing it up, I'd be sitting there all day until he was done.
Look at that Vancouverite.
He's well-recognized.
Congratulations!!!!
I clicked this video out of curiosity and found myself in a trance. This was always a song that just blended into the walls for me, but seeing it actually being played shows what a musical masterpiece it is. Awesome cover and amazing playing. Thumbs up a new sub headed your way, sir.
