Hannah, Answer a couple questions for me would you? I think it would help us recommend games you enjoy.
    1. The idea of repeating a game after I've beaten it and looking for new things/efficiencies appeals to me. (y/n)
    2. I prefer games that represent a significant investment of time (50+ hours gameplay) versus games that can be finished in one or two play sessions.
    3. I want to be taken on a journey, meet interesting characters and see them interact.
    4. I want time spent in game to be a feast for my senses, visually and aurally. I am disinterested in simple graphics and soundtracks.
    5. I want to have a clear directive when playing a game. Figuring out my own direction just leaves me lost and confused.
If you answer these questions, I think your community will be able to more easily suggest games you will get a kick out of, not just ones we want to see you play/struggle with.

      1. Maybe. I'm replaying TLOU but I don't think I'll replay 2. I'm finding new things but not necessarily looking for new things as an objective.
      2. I think I like games in the 20 to 30 hour range. But I also suck right now so everything takes longer.
      3. I don't know. I liked the cut scenes from the last of us and I did not like having to decide what to say in Mass effect.
      4. Kind of.
      5. For the love of God tell me where I'm going. It doesn't have to be obvious, but I hate looking around. I feel so stupid.

Okay, perhaps the community can back me on this one... But how about Metal Gear Rising: Revengance?
Fully optional replay value, can exist within your range of preferred playtime with your current experience, has cinematic cutscenes that do not require any stress on your part, is a step up from Doom in terms of sensory feasting and finally, is largely linear with virtually no real chance of getting lost.
Oh, and you get to kill stuff.

The direction issue is particularly interesting. Happens to a lot of gamers regardless of skill. Does it have to do with inherent real life spatial perception? Or is it a disconnect with your character’s senses in the virtual world? Would she have an easier time navigating the same space in real life or equally clueless?

I think "Completion" in this context means Completing EVERYTHING available to do in the game, most of the times, way more than just completing the game "story" or "run" itself, things like collecting all the hidden or not so hidden things in a game, talking to everybody, getting all the types of guns, crafting all the tools, things in that regard

There was a point where most everything in every game trailer made her frown and say "I don get it", or she would get VERY shocked by pretty mild violence. Now she regularly sees some pretty whacky and gruesome shit in games and the videos on them, and she just nods like "yeah this is what I expected".

i think its hard to guage your motivation when playing games this early on. i think a lot of the excitment you might get from completing the game is from how new they are to you and how it can be a challenging task because of your current skill level. the completionist part was definetly more refering to people who want to hunt every achievment, not just completing the game. once the novelty of finishing games wears off, i think itll be a lot easier to measure your motivations.

Loved your reaction! :) A couple of things 🤓👆
    - It's JRPG, not GRPG (J from Japanese) - they usually have a more anime-style aesthetic and a few other differences from other RPGs.
    - If you want to play one of the Zelda games, considering what you said in this video, Hyrule Warriors or Breath of the Wild are better suggestions for you than a more classical and story-intensive one, like, say, Skyward Sword.
That is, unless you want to try to "improve your openness" and try something new, to see if you can enjoy a game with more story/exploration. Although Zelda has a lot of lore, usually it doesn't make heavy use of cutscenes, like some other story-focused games (which kinda feel like you're watching a movie); story is told more in terms of interactions, so you can enjoy as much or as little story as you want. Same with exploration - there's achievements, but they're not required for you to beat the game. In this case, I'd recommend Majora's Mask for a 3D Zelda, and A Link Between Worlds (3DS) or Link's Awakening (Switch) for a 2D Zelda.

@@croatiaboy11 Twitch is about quite a bit ahead so if Doom is what you are looking for, just hit up the Twitch while its still up there. She streams there first. She is currently posting her Last of Us stuff edited for time here. She started streaming that 3 months ago and finished about two back now. The unedited and unlisted streams of that is generally 2 hours long(last one in part 1 series was 4+ to finish it) and she's getting them down to 40-50 minutes or so on the condensed streams. You can check her channel page playlists for the first two games plus DLC to see her methodology. You notice they are unlisted videos but a public playlist. You can see she migrated TLOU2 Twitch streams over 2 days after she finished it. Given the total length its obvious she didn't stream all that in 2 days because its easily 36+ hours long. So her approach seems to be stream on twitch til a game is done. Move streams to CZcams unlisted. Do editing for time and release that version on YT. Release about 1 a week with her other content at her current pace. Two videos a week on YT. Streams every few days on Twitch based on free time. So when she finishes Doom, check her channel page playlists tab for the unedited versions or wait months for the edited down version because she has some catching up to do being three full games deep. Some may be hidden like some of the TLOU2 streams. You'd have to ask her the particulars. Might be copyright or something.
So 12 eps, we're on 4. That's 8 weeks until the TLOU condensed is done. 2 more for Left behind. And quite a damn few for TLOU2. So half a year at current pace for the edited versions to start Doom. The Doom unlisted versions will be up much sooner on YT with notification when she does update the playlist but they are all currently up on Twitch to binge until she offloads and renames them to put them in order for youtube. I would say binge those there.

The type of game you enjoy can vary a LOT. I like being big fish in little pond, meaning I am playing well for the type of game and level of difficulty. I could push and play on higher difficulties but I enjoy being decent performer in a group of less experienced players. I should like to build and develop my skills, but I am kinda happy just doing well in a lower difficulty compared to doing meh or badly (and keep training and practicing) in tougher content.
For example I started to play Fallout 4 after having played the other games. I have terrible aim so my only real way to win was to do a re-play and find a mod that made me super powerful. I enjoyed the story, exploring and looking around. Heck after a while I basically turned the game into a bad version of Sims when I spend most of my time developing my Settlements, building communities and plan how to efficiently grow crops, get water, build homes and comfy beds, etc. Last I checked I had probably 700-800hr played in Fallout 4 and at least half of that is just me planning and building, reloading when I don't like how something turned out and back to the drawing board. I download skins and mods to make sure guards are properly armored, that my Medic has its own Medic-themed Power Armor, etc. I don't think I have even finished that game because I cannot decide which faction to side with so I stop the story before I need to make that decision.

this might be too late for you to see, but just in case I'll throw this here. Considering you enjoy having clear goals and crave violence and destruction in your games, what about the borderlands Series? Borderlands 2 is a game that clearly tells you where to go next and challenging sections can always be made easier by completing side quests first then returning. It's a game where both the comedy and the violence become so absurd it's hard to find another series like it.(I personally think the second game is the best balance between enough features to be fun but not so many that it gets overwhelming)
Borderlands is a series of shooter rpgs that focus on both leveling up your character and looting enemies to get improved weapons and gear to progress through the story. It has a roster of brilliantly written/voiced characters that you either straight up love or love to hate. Definitely one of my top of all time games, and if you fall in love with it, It's got a lot of ways to keep playing after you beat the main story the first time.(about 45ish hours if you focus, but hundreds of hours if you add some dlc and NG+ )

I love a good story, but great mechanics and options are so much more fulfilling. Crap story/fun gameplay usually means a fun gaming experience, whereas crap gameplay/great story means I'll get bored, uninstall it after a few hours and just watch the story on CZcams.
I don't dislike social interactions, but I don't want other people to make/break my fun, so I only play singleplayer games and mostly RPG's (like The Witcher and Mass Effect) and FPS games (over-the-top ones like Serious Sam and Shadow Warrior). I also really like games that blend FPS and third-person shooters (like the Jedi Knight series) or that are immersive sims (Deus Ex) or share elements from that genre, mostly giving you more than one option to get past an obstacle/complete a quest (e.g. Knights of the Old Republic).
Most of my examples are old, because I have a large backlog and only rarely find a new game that I like enough to mention as an example when talking about my gaming preferences.

A point he didn’t really make is that most games are trying to provide many experiences to as many people as possible.
Like Minecraft, it’s a chill Lego sandbox with an unlimited map to explore, but at the same time it’s got a super competitive speedrun community. God of War (and many others) has multiple difficulty settings so you can go easy and basically watch it like a movie, or you can crank it up all the way and skip all the cutscenes just to get to the fights if you want.
If you like the quick reactionary gameplay of DOOM or GoW, you’d probably like games that put more emphasis on that. Fighting games are probably the purest representation, but also Bayonetta, DMC, Metal Gear Rising, basically any shooter, and even Monster Hunter or Elden Ring. If you like the feeling of accomplishment of overcoming difficult challenges, but not necessarily having to master the controls, turn-based tactics or rpg’s might be more your speed. All of these are typically pretty linear experiences.

    You wanted game recommendations:
Based on your Achiever self assesment:
    - Uncharted, Tomb Raider games, Guardans of the Galaxy - relatively same structure as Last of Us giving you a decent relatively not open world you can achieve towards
    - Call of Duty story modes, Wolfenstein - same, just more like doom
    - ARPG games (Diablo, Patch of Exile, Destiny, etc) are good for achievers since you level, get new gear, etc means you can have lots of small achiements in your head, can set short term goals.
    Something totally different:
    - Just to decide of you like them, since they are technically also Achivement, but more the Mastery/Strategy side of Achiements: Marvels Midnigh Suns- newest game from the XCOM devs, turn based superhero story, pretty fun!

    @ElliotTPham Před rokem

I don't know if you think you're ready for open world games, but I know a few that you may like. All of these games are singleplayer and heavily driven by story and characters.
Open world games are really the best way to become immersed within a game because you have the freedom to go anywhere and do anything, making for a much more personalised experience and a deeper connection with the world because you're really a part of it. One thing I do want to mention: These games are looooong, and feature a huge amount of secondary/additional content and ignoring it will mean that you won't be as strong as you could be and you will miss out on parts of the game, so barreling through the story and being done with it is not recommended.
Ghost Of Tsushima is an instant PlayStation classic, it's got a great story, but the main focus of the game is combat and it is fairly hard if you're not great at the technical aspects of gaming. It does feature stealth kills, arrows to the head, and explosions, though, and we all know you like those.
The Witcher 3 is one of my favourite video games of all time. The controls are a little wonky and the combat(again) may be a little hard, but no game has ever made me feel more invested in the story and world than that one. There is also a great emphasis on player choice that affects the story, so you can really make it feel like your own story. I know you like Supernatural and witcher contracts really fill that fantasy if being a moster hunter detective, piecing evidence together to figure out what the monster is, preparing for a fight and going to take it down. Not as much brother melodrama though (but there is some if you do the side quests with Lambert and Eskel(Who is alive btw, his death is a netflix thing only)). Also sex. There is sex. Nothing more risqué than titties, but you do get to choose between Triss and Yennefer. I'm Team Yennefer.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a damn story masterpiece. It's probably the one that you can get away with ignoring side content the most, because most of it isn't super fun, like the fishing and treasure hunting, but the story driven side missions are all really good.
My final recommendation would be Hogwarts: Legacy. I know there is controversy around the game because JK Rowling, but her influence really isn't felt much and it's the most immersive Hogwarts experience there is. It also happens to be very noob friendly, having an easy to pick up combat system that is nonetheless very deep on higher difficulties and sporting a lot of accessibility features, like an audio visualiser so the hearing impaired/deaf can determine where sounds come from in-game, and even an arachnophobia mode, which replaces the (numerous) spider enemies with other types of baddies.
If you want something more linear like the Last Of Us games, try the Uncharted and Tomb Raider series. They don't have much side content, and the combat is not super technically challenging on the lower difficulties.

I think you should try out different types of games to see what you like, and then go from there. ^^ Like get a good representative game from every genre and try it out. For example, I'm a completionist when playing games and I really enjoy fantasy games, so when I played Witcher 3 for the first time, I had to finish every single quest, get every single item, and then play it a couple of more times to experience every story and all achievements. When I played Dark Souls I had to once again, finish all the bosses, lick all areas clean, do all quests etc. I love horror games like Silent Hill and Bioshock too, I love platformers like Hollow Knight. But I also play competitive social games like League of Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty etc. I think you can definitely like games from all different genres so don't stay in a single genre but try branching out.

Most games that give you the ability to cause mass destruction aren't that hard compared to other games that limit your skill set. So it makes sense challenge is far away from destruction. It isn't all inclusive obviously, many games are getting better graphics and sound design along with more demanding gameplay, but it's hard to allow a player to blow through an obstacle and still make it challenging. Maybe the set up is challenging, but the destruction itself isn't all that hard to appreciate.

Although a lot of us really love huge universes and expansive games if your super "I just want to beat the game" I am not sure you would enjoy playing a lot of those large very long games as amazing as they are or maybe just make sure you mix it up with lots of short fast fun games Maybe get 3 lists going, games under 10 hours, games around 25 to 35 hours, and games over 50 hours and play some shorter games in-between longer stuff to get those I finished the game feelings while still letting yourself enjoy some of the larger more drawn out games. I tried to have a lot of variety in types of games.
    Short and quick games
    The Stanley parable [2 hours}
    Limbo [2 hours]
What remains of Edith Finch [3 hours]

Fall out new Vegas [Open world]
Witcher 3 wild hunt [Open world]
Legend of Zelda breath of the wild [Open world]

Since you were looking for game recs, I’d probably suggest Uncharted, God of War and Devil May Cry on PS5. If you had a Switch I’d probably suggest Bayonetta. I don’t think the newest Zeldas would be a good fit since you don’t really want exploration games and that’s basically the whole point of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (wonderful games though). JRPGs often tell grand stories but they tend to be LONG. Like, 50+ hours long.

A study done my Dr. Browse Howler called the G.O.A.T can totally help you out here. Tell me what you’d answer.
    1.
You are approached by a frenzied Vault scientist, who yells, "I'm going to put my quantum harmonizer in your photonic resonation chamber!" What's your response?
    2.
While working as an intern in the Clinic, a patient with a strange infection on his foot stumbles through the door. The infection is spreading at an alarming rate, but the doctor has stepped out for a while. What do you do?
    3.
You discover a young boy lost in the lower levels of the Vault. He's hungry and frightened, but also appears to be in possession of stolen property. What do you do?
    4.
Congratulations! You made one of the Vault 101 baseball teams! Which position do you prefer?
    5.
Your grandmother invites you to tea, but you're surprised when she gives you a pistol and orders you to kill another Vault resident. What do you do?
    6.
Old Mr. Abernathy has locked himself in his quarters again, and you've been ordered to get him out. How do you proceed?
    7.
Oh, no! You've been exposed to radiation, and a mutated hand has grown out of your stomach! What's the best course of treatment?
    8.
A fellow Vault 101 resident is in possession of a Grognak the Barbarian comic book, issue number 1. You want it. What's the best way to obtain it?
    9.
You decide it would be fun to play a prank on your father. You enter his private restroom when no one is looking, and.... do what?
    10.
Who is indisputably the most important person in Vault 101: He who shelters us from the harshness of the atomic wasteland, and to whom we owe everything we have, including our lives?
Please make sure you’ve answered all these questions honestly and to the best of your ability. If you have, then all of us here in the comments know FULLY what kind of gamer you are :)

It has systems for creating settlements that you can ignore or build a city. What you find yourself doing in the game would tell you a lot more than any video.

In reference ot when you said that you were chasing the sense of accomplishment when you finished the game you were playing, pay attention to how you feel in that moment. Razbuten, who's Gaming for a Non-Gamer series you've already started watching, once said, "You know a game's good when you get that hollow empty feeling after beating it." This is a quotation that is frequently on my mind, and I've experienced it in a number of my favorite titles over the years. I find that, for me at least, it has to do with the end of the game a the realization, or understanding, that that experience I just spent all that time enjoying is now over, and I don't get to enjoy it in the same way anymore. I doubt this is something everyone experiences, but it's something interesting to keep int he back of your mind.

I feel like this video can easily leed to overthinking something that can be as simple as looking at the price tag of the games. Therefore I am not going to focus to much on trying to project what I think your personality is when making game recomendations. (I also feel like that can easily lead into streotypying since we all have unconsious biases).
Anyway just looking at playstation store games that are less than 30$ and take less than 30 h to beat I might recommend for you to consider:
1.Battlefield 1 25,99 CAD 6 1/2 h to beat This is a first person shooter. You play as different soldiers in World War 1 and fight countless enemy soldiers trying to complete your missions. I am not sure how historically acurate this game is but I am sure some history buffs might like it. Also people who generally like army and shooting games.
2.Arkham Knight 24,99 CAD 23 1/2 h to beat This game is a sequal but I don't think it is completely necessary to have played the other games. You go around as batman beating criminals and trying to stop supervillains. The core essence is a power fantasy. The game has a story that I had mixed feelings about. Some things I liked some I didn't. I also feel a person's previous perception and feelings towards the character of batman and comicbook stories may influence how they feel about the game.
    3. Lego Harry Potter collection 7,49 CAD 28 h to beat This game has a lot of puzzle solving but its aimed at children and parents with not much gaming experience so its not unnecesarily complex. It follows the story of all 7 harry potter books and 8 movies mostly following the movies. It has some child friendly humor that may be either funny or slightly annoying. Mostly this game is for people who want to explore the world of Harry Potter. Basically Hogwarts Legacy for kids that is a lot cheaper. The Rowling controvery may also deter some people away form this product.
    4. Goat Simulator 13,49 CAD 2h to beat but if you want 100% around 10 h to beat This is a joke game. You play as an indestructable goat that causes havoc in a town. Considering you found exploding that one guy in last of us 2 funny I think you can have quit a lot of laughs with this game. I don't think there is much reason to play it however beyond how absurd it is. How ever a lot of people who play this game end up just nonstop giggling.
5.Uncharted The Nathan Drake collection 9,99 CAD 27 h to beat This is actually 3 games. The style of gameplay is somewhat similar to last of us you collect ammo and confront and shoot enemies then the story progresses until you meet a new group of enemies in another area. These are adventure stories. The stories follow a wisecracking protagonist in search of treasure.
6.Tomb Raider trilogy I think you decided to wait until these games are on sale so I won't focus too much on this. Similar games to Uncharted except the characters are different. I feel like Lara Croft the main character of these games differs from Nathan Drake on three aspects 1. She is a woman Nathan is a man. The difference is not huge but it does influence some sections and relationships obviously. 2. Lara is I think is a bit more serious than Nathan and also more conserned with protecting her friends. Nathan's a good guy too but he can also be a bit egotistical and his ultimate goal is pretty much always the treasure. 3. In the first game Lara is just starting her adventures while Nathan is alread experienced in his first game. Therefore Lara is a bit younger and less experienced and learns more through out the games. Beyond this they are both attractive people surviving impossible odds with only surface level scratches and kill probably hundreds if not thousands of unnamed people in their search for treasure.
    7. Batman telltale series 19,99 CAD 8 h 30 min Choose your own adventure batman game. You make choices that influences the game's story to predetermined paths. Same idea as choose your adenture books where you turn to specific page based on what you choose. This is by the way a whole season with 5 episodes so trying the first episode before you buy the whole season is also an option.
8.Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Remastered 26,99 CAD 6 h to beat A first person shooter classic. A lot of modern gamers learned their shooting skills form this game. I think a lot of your viewers might like seeing a new gamers experince to many moments of this game. Like batlefield 1 its main interest lies in being a war game but it has also now become a piece of gaming history. So whether one likes it, is indifferent towards it or hates it; in some sense its kind of like casablanca, matrix or princess bride (ok I might be a bit overselling it here). At least you would get introduced to context of some of gaming's memes like "remember no russian" and "soap trusted you".
9.Life is Strange Complete Season 26,99 CAD 14 h like telltale games this is a choose your own story game. In this game you play as a highschool girl named Max Caulfield who for mysterious reasons gets acess to a power to revind time back a short period. The game explores the butterfly effect theory which states that even small actions can have far reaching consecuences. The story has a lot of teen angst but also lightheartedness. The tone of the game gives is that it really is more about the journey than the end. I guess whether one likes this game really depends on whether the writing sticks whith them or not. Be warned there are moments where there is a lot of walking to find things in order to progress. Think Last of us and searching for pallets, generators and gasoline.
    10. Fran Bow 26,99 7h 45 min to beat This is a horror point and click game with disturbing subject matters and images. Fan Bow our main protagonist starts the game in a mental hospital where she was placed after both of her parents were brutally killed. Fran ingest special pills through out the game which allows her to interact with things that are not vicible or tangible in our regular reality. Fran escapes the asylum in order to find her cat Mr Midnight and get ot her aunt Grace. Through out her journey a scary demon creature who most likely killed her parents harasses her. As the story progresses things start becoming stranger and more fantastical. I think this game draws a lot of inspiration from Alice in Wonderland's story in the sense that once Fran leaves the asylum all reality starts disapearing as well.
Keep in mind that I only recomended games here that I am familar with. Also I can't be completely sure about the prices or length of time to complete.

    Jrpg, J as in Japan.
    Japanese Role Playing Games

  • @JamesHulltheFabulousJ

2:53 Bad enunciation by Daryll there. That's *J*RPG - Japanese Role-Playing Game(s). Aside form being developed in Japan, they have traditionally featured turn-based combat with multiple character parties with a heavy focus on skill progression, story, and character development. Recently, however, some Japanese developers such as Final Fantasy director Naoki Yoshida have expressed that the distinction inherent in the acronym has some derisive implication.
6:58 The Big Five is a fairly popular personality measurement supplanting the previous Myers-Briggs personality assessment. I think psychologists like it because instead of providing a concrete definition of personality traits, it provides a measurement of where you lie on a scale of various traits. ...which is probably a better analysis of personality since our individual personalities are constantly changing and evolving.
24:55 The CZcamsr "A Closer Look" did a deep dive into the story/character problems of The Last of Us: Part 2 which included an interesting rewrite (The Closer Look - How to Divide a Fanbase). At an hour and 45 minutes, it is probably too long for a CZcams reaction but may be interesting to see how another writer may have approached a sequel differently (or at least cleaned up the story for the sequel that we got)
11:46 I'm pretty sure "Mastery/Achievement" as stated in the vid refers to more than just finishing the game and also includes conquering all of the various challenges provided by the game (such as those tracked by "Achievements" on Xbox - the PS equivalent being "Trophies"). As such, it may be worth considering whether you are motivated by overcoming consistently more challenging tasks, if your desire to finish the game is driven by an urge to complete the story, or perhaps some other sense of accomplishment outside of gameplay mastery. I feel that gamers labeled "Achievers" would try to beat a game at increasingly high levels of difficulty while also unlocking all the trophies.
24:24 I personally don't have any game reqs aside from ones I've mentioned previously (Uncharted/Tomb Raider/Resident Evil 2,3,4,7), but perhaps you'd like to try a game from a different genre? I'd say it's a sound approach: like tasting multiple things from a buffet before deciding on a favorite. Since you like action and/or destruction (and magic/sorcery?), I'd suggest a character action game, like Bayonetta: czcams.com/video/h7PZ1i992kc/video.html

      Some jargon:
Tilted: continuing to play a game when _angered_ by a part of it and it getting to you, making irrational decisions (very common in competitive team games where leaving a game has penalties and people continue playing despite being angry)
"Players - World" were extremes on one scale, that is to refer to what is your opposition - other people or just the computer, respectively. If there is opposition, of course.

As others have said. I think it's too early to decide. I would encourage you to explore a wide variety of titles. I'd recommend playing GRIS. - ALSO. Doom is a great game, however... By their nature, some games are inherently suited for one platform or another. For example, Platformers and Racing Games are WAY better with a controller. Whereas FPS game (First Person Shooter) Are best on Mouse and Keyboard. You CAN play them on controller. Many people do. but you are missing a part of the game. There is a degree of movement and action the game is designed for that controllers can't replicate. I'm not being elitist, Doom in particular actually convinced MANY people to buy a PC after experiencing the difference. I'm not trying to convince you to buy a gaming PC. they are expensive and you should explore more games before you commit to that. Just something to consider when choosing a game. - HOWEVER. There actually IS one game that you can play on a literal potato (yes literal) that will allow you to experience FPS games on KBM (keyboard Mouse). DooM (1993) - The Original Doom. It's on Steam for $5. or on XBOX Gamepass PC. The graphics have been upscaled a bit, some Quality of Life features added, so It plays like a modern game. I would encourage you to give it a try.

If you are looking for a sense of accomplishment...might I suggest Hollow Knight, and if you love that feeling you get of taking down a boss in that game, you might be a Souls player. Then the real fun begins. :D

I don't think you really fall into the challenge box because I don't see you going out of your way to finish every mission or collect every collectable, you just want to finish the game which is basicaly how all games play, you're more of a Boom baby type gamer someone who enjoys differing ways to beat or destroy to get a sense of adrenaline.

You are way too new to gaming to really be able to judge how your personality effects your gaming. Ideally to get something from this you would have played and beaten many different types of games which would give a better answer. Once you start playing many different games aside from the few you have started with you will naturally branch out and discover stuff you probably did not think you would like to do in a game. This video was still really interesting though and seeing you learn new things about games is just a lot of fun lol
