  • A list of low TSH symptoms both on and off thyroid medication. How your thyroid medications impacts TSH level and more.
    Does having a low TSH cause any sort of symptoms? The answer is yes but what may surprise you is that the symptoms associated with a low TSH are not universal.
    They depend on what caused your low TSH and how you are feeling.
    I've broken up this topic into 2 main categories:
    Those with a low TSH who are taking thyroid medication and those with a low TSH who are NOT on thyroid medication.
    Those who are taking thyroid medication with a low TSH tend to present in 2 main ways with 2 sets of symptoms:
    - Those with a low TSH from thyroid medication who have HYPERthyroid symptoms which include:
    + Weight loss
    + Palpitations
    + Rapid heart rate
    + Tremors
    + Anxiety
    + Hair loss
    - And those with a low TSH from thyroid medication who have HYPOthyroid symptoms which include:
    + Weight gain
    + Cold intolerance
    + Slow heart rate
    + low body temperature
    + chronic pain
    + Depression
    + Hair loss
    There are some similarities between these two sets of symptoms but you can differentiate them with close evaluation.
    You should be aware that having a low TSH does not automatically mean that you are hyperthyroid! Hyperthyroidism is a cellular state and depends on your symptoms as WELL as your lab tests.
    So it's possible to have both a low TSH and still be hypothyroid. In addition, it's also possible to have a low TSH and take too much medication. This is why you need both your symptoms and the TSH to figure out what is going on.
    Those who are not taking thyroid medication are much easier to diagnose.
    If you fit into this category then your symptoms will either be present (and fit into the hyperthyroid category) or they will be absent (in which case you just need to recheck your TSH in 2 months).

      I think you helped me figure this out. I have always had high tsh like 6-11, for past year insomnia (like have to take sedatives just to sleep) anxiety, mood stuff..recently had tsh and its .18.
      I have been on levothyroxine and NP prescribed by doc to get my higher levels down. Could that explain my symptoms...

    Omgosh this is so overwhelming.. I appreciate you taking the time to explain so much .. I just had 1/2 the thyroid removed .. pathology came back papillary microcarsinoma ( I’m sure I spelled that wrong) anyways of course my remaining thyroid now went hypo ... tsh is 5.29 so I started synthroid 50 mcg 2 days ago ... This seems like such a science experiment that I’m really overwhelmed by it all so I truly appreciate you explaining this ya in layman’s terms ... this way I have a better understanding as to how to advocate for myself. Thank you so much for this video! Its rare but I'm both Graves and Hoshi since 2003 and have had quite a journey. Doing well but still not right and this info helped alot to understand what we might be missing. I'm actually having symptoms from both categories so perhaps it's the ratios which are so hard for MY doctors to understand. Looking forward to more videos!

They are very slow to give back results here in Ireland. I decided to have another TSH test recently. Its 3 months since i had the low TSH score. Im now waiting, and waiting....I appreciate you saying dont do anything, just recheck!!

    Hi Dr. Child's,
    I have listened to a couple of your videos on the thyroid and they are extremely informative. I have a very good Doctor who leans towards natural medicine and so she has been testing me quite regularly due to my hypothyroid condition. For at least 20 years I have been on Raw desiccated thyroid. At one point I was doing fantastic and was only taking about 30 mg a day. I wanted to get off the thyroid medications so I decided to stop taking it and that was a big mistake. My hair started falling out and I started gaining weight. Mainly the change of the texture of my hair and my hair falling out was a huge concern. So I went back on the thyroid medication at 60 mg. My medical doctor tested me and my TSH was at .01. Two months later she tested me again and my TSH continued to be very low. My T3 was elevated 7.5 and my T4 was 12.7. I also checked my antibody level and she said it was within normal range. I've always been hypothyroid so your video on the suppressed thyroid made a lot of sense to me. At this point I do not have heart palpitations and my Doctor will check me to see if I have any osteopenia or osteoporosis. By the way, I am 69 years old, a retired about two and a half years ago so my lifestyle has definitely been much less active. I used to do yoga everyday until my yoga studio is closed down to the covid, so any exercise I get is just what I do myself at home which is definitely a lot less. I cannot afford a Naturopath so I am hoping you can give me some advice. My Medical Doctor doesn't seem to really know what to do. I have heard that it would be good for me to start lowering my raw desiccated thyroid, maybe get back to the 30 mg that I was taking a couple years ago. I've also been listening to some Indian practitioners who are suggesting to get off the medication and use some other natural forms of thyroid support. I would really appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!
    Maggie Ryane

The Dr lowered my medicine to 112 MCG. I use to have Graves Disease then I had a thyroidectomy and about 10 years later became hypothyroid. I see an endocrinologist in a month. I am very worried about this, is it possible for me to become hyperthyroid again? You seem like an amazing Dr. wish all were as informative as you. Thank you so much!

    Loved your video.
    My tsh has been checked twice.
    Was .02, now .03, normal T4 and T3.
    I've just seen an Endocrinologist in Tampa and the second tsh was after he switched me from Armour Thyroid to Tyrosint.
    Next step is neck scan. My history is being hypothyroid since 1999 and then suddenly losing 20 lbs, cold intolerance and other symptoms. He'll recheck Thyroid numbers in 3 weeks including Hashimotos. I'm also ANA positive. I've been tested for it, but he wants to retest.

    2018 was my worst year on record, which spans sixty years. Depression, joint pain, spinal stenosis, mental health issues, memory loss, and the rapid degeneration of my hip that was replaced this past December 2018. My GP said I had a hyper thyroid according to my recent lab results when I was in for an annual physical last month. Again I have been feeling a lot of those hyper symptoms in the past two years, especially heat intolerance, fatigue, trouble getting a restful sleep, and low energy. But from my own research my numbers seem normal. My TSH is .75 and my free T4 is 1.1. I watched you video on low TSH with the list of symptoms for Hypo and Hyper, and strangely enough I have symptoms from both columns. I have weight gain, palpitations to 120 bmp just walking to another room, intolerance to cold and heat, body tingling all over, from feet to face and tongue, exhaustion, dry skin and hair, and all over "not well" feeling that has been ongoing for more than a month. My current TSH level is 1.17 and T4 is 1.8. Is this something might be related to either Thyroid issue?

    Hello Dr Childs. I live in the UK, treated under the NHS for hypothyroidism since 1994 or 1995, and currently take 50mcg thyroxine and 20mcg liothyronine (T3 started in 2013). Most, recent tests in Feb were: TSH 0.19, FT4 8.9, FT3 4.9. Still get fatigue, aches and pains and cognitive issues. Doctors now want me to stop all medication (over 4-5 weeks) because they don't believe I ever had thyroid disease (diagnosed in France) even though I had all textbook symptoms. The issue has been raised very strongly more recently because of the high cost of T3 in this country. I am very worried about this as my symptoms have fluctuated in response to different meds brands and doses and am really scared of going back to how I was. I have been wondering about central hypothyroidism as one possibility for my results. May I ask for your thoughts please on 1) Is it usually safe and reasonable to remove thyroid meds after being treated for so many years? 2) Might it be central hypothyroidism? 3) Might you have any contacts in the UK with good and open-minded thyroid specialists you can recommend? Many thanks.

    Thank you so much for your video. Unfortunately you didn’t touch on my situation:
    TSH = 0.08
    Free T4= 1.3
    I have every one of the HYPOthyroid symptoms on your list. (Except low HR- I’m usually 70-90/min.
    I do have benign thyroid nodules that haven’t changed over 10 yrs. But my TSH over the years are as follows:
    2011 = 0.45
    2013= 0.52
    2017= 0.62
    2018 = 0.26
    2023= 0.08
    Not on /nor have I ever been on any thyroid meds.

    My TSH is 151 right now but my T4 is 0.5 and my T3 is 2.4 now I am on T4 50, plus 25 Synthroid, and T3 35 SR and 10 mcg of lio, because I had already purchase my compound. so far I feel better, but my nails are not growing, and my fingers are still sensitive. I am hoping that when I do my blood work end of this month that my numbers will be better. I read that woman my age early 60s TSH should be more like 2-2.5 but I know it really depends on how I feel. Thank you for sharing your work.

    Hi, this was VERY helpful, but I'm still looking for answers. Have Hypothyriodism and Hashimotos (verified by antibody test). I am ACTIVELY trying to loose weight. Strict no compromise diet and daily exercise NO MATTER WHAT for past 8 months. I have lost 52lb's so far. I am also chronically anemic and take 45mg Iron daily.
    I am on NP Thyriod 180mg daily, if I take any less my weight loss progress stops completely.
    Current complaints: Alarming hair loss and sensitivity to cold
    Latest blood test shows
    TSH: 0.06
    T3: 3.0
    T4: 0.9
    Total Iron: 38
    Ferritin: 8
    Question 1:
    My doctor wants to reduce my dose due to the low TSH, but I am reluctant to do so for fear of having more hypo symptoms and inability to loose weight. I am wondering, is the TSH in of itself important? Is living with low TSH but normal T3 and T4 okay? As I understand it, the TSH is a leading indicator and signal, but can a low TSH be a problem. Another Endocrinologist seems to think I should not decrease my dosage..
    Question 2:
    My doctor insists I break up my NP Thyriod into 3 times daily instead of one dosage because it is short acting. This is very burdensome to manage due to the 1 hour before and 2 hour after restriction plus the fact that i need to take it apart from my Iron supplements due to the interference with absorption. Another endocrinologist seems to think taking it all at once is just fine. My question is, is there a benefit to breaking up the NP thyriod dosage or is it just as effective taken all at once. I have contacted the manufacturer but never heard back.
    Please help and please do continue to post your wonderful content!

Tired, my feet were cold, no motivation, gaining weight and other issues. I stopped taking it almost a month ago and I actually feel much better. I do a 0 carb diet which has helped. I added some raw milk to my diet also. So now it's less than 30 grams of carbs per day. I ordered some naturally dissected beef thyroid supplements and see how this works. I will recheck my TSH levels in 2 months. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi! I’ve had hypothyroidism for almost 30 yrs. I’ve been 309 lbs and 150 lbs and always needed the name brand medication. For the longest time, I took it at night with my usual vitamins, etc. About 6 months ago someone convinced me to take my usual 150mcg dose in the mornings like I should. In Dec 2021, my TSH was .08 which is the lowest I’ve ever been. My Dr suggested I lower my dose to 137.5mcg. I put off lowering the dose until 2 weeks ago. My current TSH is 4.35. That seems like a big shift but maybe it’s not. Is it possible taking my medicine too close to my testing time back in December could give me a false low reading? Is a swing like that normal? I was 2.53 in 5/21, .080 in 12/21, and 4.32 in 4/22. Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me.

The only diet where I can loose weight is the HCG diet and I need to do that diet at least once a year or I will be a blimp. Each year i gain 30-40lbs REGARDLESS what I eat. I eat clean and about the same as my 100lb wife but i still constantly gain till I diet (hcg). I've tried other diets but my body refuses to lose weight. I 've been on a CPAP for about 3mos which has helped energy but I get exhausted very quickly. My normal body temp is 96.8. Help? I get a full VA blood workup once a year.
