This song makes me think of my mother! She loved Dr Hook so much and this song could have been written about her and my father.. sometimes being beautiful doesn't make life easier.
🦋Amazing interview. I listen to Dr Hook and now Dennis Locorriere I have to agree with you on his unique vocals. Shel Silverstien knew exactly what he was doing when he gave Dennis his tune's. I love all of their song's and I respect that you wrote that song it's brilliant so natural on feelings I feel the word's.🦋✌
I remember siting the car listening to this song while my boy friend was putting gas in. Thinking he went to the most expensive station in town. .72 cents a gal. Lol! 🌹love this song!
The most amazing thing I learned from this is that Engelbert lives in a mansion- with not a single guitar. Nice interview, would have loved to hear him play the whole song. His version sounds fantastic.
Great songs always come from heartbreak, "Nights In White Satin" another song that will live forever.. I wonder how the women in the songs feel about it, knowing it's about them.
I was in the Studio when this was being recorded. Ron Haffkine was trying to contact his partner Bobby because he wanted the song to be the next single. I was able to reach Bobby who called Ron to get the ball rolling. I was 19 years old and first time in a studio.
This song I played for a woman I fell head over heels in love with. I'm stuck in a loveless marriage with a narcissist woman who does not love me. This other woman I love, lives in southwest Montana in a town that starts with the letter "S". I Iive Northwest Montana in a town that starts with the letter "E". Her name is Paige and my name is Gary. We've been separated for two years. I've never tried to contact her because I don't wasn't to hurt her. I want her to be happy, even if it's with another man. I love Paige, and I want her to be happy. As for me. I just need to make peace with my maker, and pray I don't burn in hell for my sin's . Amen. Paige Honey. remember this? "I would never hate you". "I would never hurt you". "I would never judge you". AND, I WILL ALWAYS Love you!.. With this said. You know it's me.
Every time I hear this I see Dennis in my head grinning at the camera in a performance of it. I often wondered why Dr. Hook changed their sound so drastically. This in part explains that. Sorry but I still think Shel wrote the best songs for them.
There is a video of Sylvia's mother and a vid of the story behind it. Sylvia's mother was written by shel. I believe its him who dated sylvia and was calling her mom mrs avery. My favorite song
WHY would you cut off the actual song at the end!? Listen to someone talking about it for ten minutes then you cut the song SHORT by the person who wrote it? Good grief
Bart Herbison is a great guy but I always feel like he should let the songwriter tell the story. Rather than him telling them what happened, let them tell him.
Nice chat. When artists say “I wrote”, I always wonder who ACTUALLY WROTE the song, ie Put the black dots on the manuscript score in all the different instruments.
Nope, the 'black dots' is the music for a piece. Most song writers don't put a single 'dot' on the paper. In fact many musicians in bands can't read music. Guitarists just know the chords, the drummers know the sticking etc.
Unless you are someone like Kris Kristofferson (not many of those around!), the songwriter writes the lyrics ("the song") and musicians create the music. Note sure it really matters who writes the music sheet thereafter.
Great song, Dr. Hook were such a fun-lovin' band.
Thank you for writing such a Great song! Brings back memories.
Dr Hook were huge down here in Australia, this song in particular.
This song ages beautiful. Every word so true.
Thanks to even Steven for the song..when yur in love with a beautiful women its hard..
such a great and beautiful song.. oh my god.. how I miss the 70's... when music was music for real.
Yes ! Me too’ I miss 70s music. The lyrics were great! ♥️💕
The beautiful music of the wonderful 70s..
Amazing writer. My best song.
Never thought of this song as disco, just a great pop hit.
Cruisin with my dad back in the late 80s in his Buick Regal listening to Dr. Hook..... Priceless memories
This song makes me think of my mother! She loved Dr Hook so much and this song could have been written about her and my father.. sometimes being beautiful doesn't make life easier.
This is great, wise beyond measure.
Probably not but I'd sure give it a try for one day 😉
Was 10 years old when this song was released. Have loved it ever since.
As a Gen Xer in my mid 50s, the 70s feel like a distant, beautiful sublime dream.
Same…amazing memories.
What a song, cant be any truer relates to most of us, Dr HOOK just makes it watching Dennis Locorriere perform so natural ✊❤️
Hell yes, thank God. Engelbert didn't sing this song 🙏🤞👍🙂
Dennis did it best! Love it.❤️
Good thing that you wrote that beautiful song!!!!!!
🦋Amazing interview. I listen to Dr Hook and now Dennis Locorriere I have to agree with you on his unique vocals. Shel Silverstien knew exactly what he was doing when he gave Dennis his tune's. Beautiful song, respect to even Stevens.
A great song with a great story behind it. I am also a songwriter and hope someday the world can hear about my songs. Cheers Paul Geno
Wow, I loved the way he sung his song.
wonderful song,,,,,love it
I remember siting the car listening to this song while my boy friend was putting gas in. Thinking he went to the most expensive station in town. .72 cents a gal. Lol! 🌹love this song!
I remember doing the driving simulators in high school, passing the signs that read .35 cents a gallon. How old is this video?
The most amazing thing I learned from this is that Engelbert lives in a mansion- with not a single guitar. Nice interview, would have loved to hear him play the whole song. His version sounds fantastic.
Ever notice best songs written on rough life experiences in less than 15 minutes.
Inspiration doesn't last long.
Great songs always come from heartbreak, "Nights In White Satin" another song that will live forever.. I wonder how the women in the songs feel about it, knowing it's about them.
Dr. Hook; freakin best band ever! Dennis and Ray were magic together. Rip sexy pirate man.
I loved them, still listen, and always will. Such fun memories
Thank you and God bless!!
A great story. Thanks
Loved this Interview!!!
A well-tuned Interview. Bravo!
I remember going to the local Holiday Inns to listen to groups back in the 70s. Ah, those were the days.
🥀Amazing Interview! It's always good to hear how some song's come to life! Thanks for posting this video it's priceless🥀✌🥀☝️
Great interview - worth the 10 minutes.

Great song and very interesting information about how it came to be.
Amazing ♥♥♥i like this interview great one so this is my favourite track 😘😘😘 ♥ awesome 👍
This song was not meant for Engelbert , that’s why the machine ate it up ... 🎶

Great interview!
Should have remembered this song at the time I was introduced to 'her'.
My daughter's dad gave me this cassette and a ring from a bubble gum machine
👍👍👍👍nicely done !!!
awesome
great story..... I feel better now.
Got away with one of the best double entendres ever: When you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's hard
Sometimes when Dennis sings it live, after he sings "it's hard" he adds in "let's hope"

damn Bart, let him talk, you keep cutting him off when he is talking smh
let him finish the song! good grief........
I agree with Mr. Stevens about the rendition by Steel Pulse. It's so different and interesting.
Agreed, a super song, but the overall feel owes a hell of a lot to Rock your baby, George McRae's hit of 5 years previously.
Great interview. I would think a good producer would get one listen of that demo and think hit. It's just good.
Shoulda’ showed a picture of the woman that inspired this great song...’When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman.’ 🥴
@Benny Hill absolutely, love your reply!
Dennis sang lead the majority of the time for Dr Hook...
WHY would you cut off the actual song at the end!? Listen to someone talking about it for ten minutes then you cut the song SHORT by the person who wrote it? Good grief
Cool guitar, with all the writing around (the edges)it!!👍 😎 What's the writing on it.. :)
I think I like his version better than the hit record!
Bart Herbison is a great guy but I always feel like he should let the songwriter tell the story. Rather than him telling them what happened, let them tell him.
They cut it off too quick! I like the way he was playing that.
I was in the Coast Guard too! Whaddya know!

Ahhhh don't think that's the meaning darlin'
"Alternate lifestyle." Don't get cancelled, bro.
Who is David

Interesting story how Dr. Hook got it but I think most people had already figured out the back story on the song. Whatever happened to the girl?!
ALL THAT SCRATCHING , SNORTING CRYSTAL
9:57... totally sounds out of tune.. and then... magic! Great story!
'You watch your friends' 🤨
It was not written as a disco song.
i dont get it er him ... great choon tho !
Why does every behind the scenes person look like a raging alcoholic Never mind ..it just hit me.
30000 sound system and not a guitar in the house ? I don't believe this story
what a creepy guy.....
