  • Stop. Panic. Grab your moisture traps and banish the dreaded damp and mould. - Yeah right !!! As if thousands of forecourt caravans are sat there with cushions up, lockers open and moisture traps all over. All it takes is a bit of common sense. That's our opinion for what it's worth.
Also a bit of an Ally update. It's a bit more than just old age.

Well said! At last someone speaking sense about winterising.
Water will do massive damage to pipes, taps and the boiler if it freezes and doesn't have anywhere to go, but leave the taps open and open the drain valve. All is then good.
There is also plenty of ventilation already due to the drop vents for gas safety.
We open the drain valve everytime we leave site. Why would you want to use more fuel to move 15kg of water around for no reason? It takes a couple of minutes to refill and get the air out again. Easy.
As for moisture traps, they collect such a tiny amount of water over weeks and months, it isn't worth it. The air it has taken the moisture from is replaced via the drop vents within a few hours.
We plan to carry on using ours too, it is warmer in the caravan than at home most of the time!
    Well played as always guys.

Thanks for watching 👀 and commenting. 👍 We weren't sure what response we'd get going against the grain.

I'm all for safety and doing things right, but I do think that some people just need something to worry about.
Enjoy the hobby, enjoy getting away, but when you are spending more time blowing air out, rotating and removing wheels, and just checking on things at the storage yard rather than actually using it, there is no enjoyment anymore.
Good on you for going against the flow and speaking your own opinion. Nobody has to follow it or agree after all!

Sorry to hear about Ally. I agree about winterizing, just make sure the vents aren't blocked and leave it alone, it's designed for it.

I thought winterising was putting extra whisky and cocoa in for the trips away.

I learnt the hard way by not fully draining my water ( using the flow device) my shower fixture had water left in it, then froze and cracked the plastic

We think you've been very unlucky there given our experiences over the years. Thanks for your comment 👍 it does add to the conversation.

Hi Guys a lot of people are panicking about what will happen to their van during the winter months. I’ve never blown the water out of pipes in 20 odd years of touring. Drain the water down when leaving site. Leave taps open in storage not had an ounce of trouble. My van won’t be used between end of November and early February, I put the cover on primarily to keep it clean and to stop water freezing and thawing in joints etc. Remember one year away during winter in our 1400 Monza, no heating just good sleeping bags. We woke in the morning to the most beautiful ice sculpture inside the kettle! As you say try and get away all through the year it’s magical.
