Ciao! Here's my cover of one of my all time favorite songs: BELLA CIAO! I heard it for the first time in La Casa de Papel and I simply fell in love with the song. A couple of days ago, I saw a video with lots of Italians singing this song from their balconies during the quarantaine and it literally gave me goosebumps. When we decided to cover Bella Ciao, I studied the lyrics (I've never sung Italian before whaaa) and I discovered the true meaning of the song. It's just wonderful and so deep. I hope my Italian pronunciation is okay and I really hope you like the video - as you can see it's inspired by La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). In Italy this song has a very strong meaning. the “partigiano” was a person who fights against fascism so in italy this song is remembered like a war song, but also like a song of freedom.

Just like Grandola Vila Morena in Portugal which, was a censored song, also appears in La Casa de Papel in the latest Season specially when [SPOILER REDACTED] died in the last episode of the Season. Used by the revolutionary military movement in 1974 when they broke into the National Radio Station and broadcasted it as a signal for the revolution to proceed with it the Fascist Regime that Portugal had Estado Novo was ended. And a transitory period into a more socialist country started.

Know this song from my youth. Have listened to more than 30 different performances. To me this one is, unexpectedly, the best of all. It goes straight to the point, without any unnecessary vocal tricks and ornamentations. For many others this is just a vocal exercise; here is truly a song about life, death and liberty. Thank you! Take it from an Italian who grew up with this song and has it in his bones, your interpretation gave me goosebumps. It is so difficult to keep a dramatic equilibrium in the interpretation as you effortlessly do, without over-dramatizing or, worse, falling into folk kitsch. In my book, among the non-Italian covers that I heard, yours is up there with Mercedes Sosa's. I love Tom Waits' version as well, but it can't be really called a cover. In any case, stellar company, congratulations!

Fun story. As a Spanish speaker, the first version of this Italian song I heard was... in Dutch. My mother grew up in exile, after a totalitarian fascist government exiled my grandparents. She learned the song in The Hague. The meaning didn't change.
