Corfe Castle Village & Swanage Pier - The Action 4 has Been a Beast All Along!!!

  • The Action 4 isn't easily caught out. It's almost a fool proof camera. Over the past two weeks, I've been testing it in so many situations and every time, I have ended up with a useable shot.
Very little footage is wasted. It's fast to use. It really doesn't freeze or do any of those daft things.
If anything, it might have a tendency to push exposure down quite heavily if there are bright things in the screen, but the detail is still there in dark areas so in post, it comes up easily.
Very left and right edges get more stretched than GoPro in standard mode with dewarp. Using the widest angle is easily straightened in post though and some of the sea shots that I took were wide and corrected in post.
I rarely needed to touch colour balance. It copes with mixed lighting extraordinarily well and moves pretty quickly from dark areas to light areas smoothly.
For stabilisation, I only used the first level. On the train shots where I stuck the camera out of the window, I used the horizon levelling system because I couldn't see the screen.
Indoor church shots were in really poor lighting. You wouldn't know much about it looking at the shots. I underexposed them slightly and raised gamma in post.
Camera was kept in auto throughout so I just let the camera 'do its thing'. Previous experience with GoPros doing this has often given me very variable results which needed sometimes tough to sort out white balance issues. That didn't happen with the Action. It's pretty much spot on.
The lavalier that I have been using is a Rode lavalier which is very good. But if you use a poor sounding source, it will never sound great. On occasions I also used the DJI Wireless mic system. Going straight into camera, I used the Boya adapter.
The audio was then equalised, compressed and normalised. No noise suppression was necessary.
Now I feel that I have more of a grasp of this camera and how it reacts to different conditions, I feel so much more confident to pick it up and run 'n gun' with the knowledge that it is just going to work fine.
This has to be the best small vlogging camera that gives quality like this so easilyand just doesn't get in the way or is cumbersome to carry around on holidays or whatever.
Seeing the new Hero 12, I think they may be in trouble .........

Another great video showcasing the action 4 and....... a cracking rendition of Y.M.C.A who could ask for more.

We had a great time down there while I collected hundreds of clips to use as examples of the Action 4. I’ve literally been throwing it around videoing anything that moves in any lighting and quite honestly, it hasn’t faltered once!

Thank you, John. I’m at my happiest (and more relaxed) I guess, just messing around on video!

Hi Ian hope you're well, great vlog or should I say a great set of vlogs. The action 4 looks like it worked faultlessly, the auto mode gave great results, stabilisation was on point, the dji seem to have got it right with the action , gopro better watch out if the GP12 has any issues confirmed GP users will jump ship. Loved the Village people impression maybe you guys could do a tribute act. Corfe is a beautiful village, we can easily walk from the caravan site we stay at into Corfe. Our plaque is at the top of the pier on the right hand side as you look out to sea, not sure but at one point you very close, we're there again soon so I'll show where it is. Going to try a lav and my wireless go on my GP8 instead of the media mod mic.
Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen

I knew I was close to your plaque. We went the whole length of the pier, Lucy in the middle, me on right and Helena left. I’d forgotten just how many there are! I must have been on it because I did get to the very end of the pier.
I think that Corfe looks like a model village on my video. I hadn’t realised that your campsite was close. It is a really lovely place.
Mind you, I like Swanage as well. Very different from Corfe but the three old inns there are the real thing!
The media mod isn’t great for sound. I used a case that held the audio converter and went direct into the GoPro with a lavalier.
I did the same for these videos. Straight into the Action from a Rode Lavalier.
I think GoPro 12 might be a real flop. Many people have waited for it to appear before deciding on Action or GoPro. My Action has been faultless all along tbh so I don’t think I’ll be returning to the GoPro. Can’t stand the locking and freezing. It wouldn’t surprise me if this might be the last GoPro and they move on maybe, to a full sized camera. Or just retain the action cameras rather than keep updating. This 12 looks like a dreadful move.

@@iancraig gopro's could definitely loss their market share if all the leaked specs are to be believed. I might keep an eye on the GP11, once the 12 is out the 11 may have some good discounts on it.

You know Jon, if you are looking at an 11, maybe look at the Action. It’s more reliable.

You looked like you fit that helmet to look like a foreman on a construction site, actually a typical foreman who doesn't fit in hehe
I do really like those old buildings, it is like a living museum.

We had a great time while I collected hundreds of clips on the Action 4 in real situations. I’m going to hang on to the Action 4 for sure. It’s a great little camera.

😂 👍 like to see folk having silly fun but the village people I can’t decide if it was spot on or borderline inappropriate 🤔😲😂😝 Cheers mate ✌️🤙

I thought I did the constructor worker very appropriately. I had studied their video online and we practised like mad beforehand, because behind the camera, there was an audience of 2000 connoisseurs who specialised in Village matters.
We’re currently working on ABBA. We moved on.
