Overtones and overtone music examples played on a violin, Overtones and undertones may occur when frequency vibrations meet to create another tone from the ones played. Here is an example of overtones (or maybe undertones) on a violin. I was not unable to find many examples of the actual playing of these phenomena so, we made one! Its possible that what you are experiencing on these double stops when you hear a third lower note are actually the so called tartini tones which aren't a purely acoustic phenomena but rather a psycho-acoustic one.
