  • Overtones and overtone music examples played on a violin, Overtones and undertones may occur when frequency vibrations meet to create another tone from the ones played. Here is an example of overtones (or maybe undertones) on a violin. I was not unable to find many examples of the actual playing of these phenomena so, we made one! Catherine was a great sport playing these mysterious and beautiful warm sounds. Play on my friends!

    Its possible that what you are experiencing on these double stops when you hear a third lower note are actually the so called tartini tones which aren't a purely acoustic phenomena but rather a psycho-acoustic one.
