Swimming Pool 101: A Crash Course for Rookies

- This is a video that covers many of the basic aspects of swimming pool care all in one long lesson. I think you will find helpful if you know nothing about your pool. I did this in one shoot where I go over the basics of the pool water itself, equipment, testing, cleaning tools and much more. All of this information can be found in my eBook also and you will see pages from my book drop down during the course of this video.
To purchase my eBook for the low price of $9.99 you can go to my webpage here: payhip.com/b/3XtG
My friend Ben who currently runs a landscaping company wants to possibly expand into pool service in his area. Since he knows next to nothing about pools I agreed to give him a crash course. So I recorded my conversation with him and created this video. I think you will find it extremely helpful.
The first point I make and one that is very crucial is to know that a pool is a very unnatural way to keep a body of water. The natural state of water is more in line with a lake or a pond. But for the pool to be maintained so that it is safe to swim in you need to do these three things:
Balance the pool water
Circulate the pool water
Clean and maintain your pool
If any of these three elements is off the pool can turn on you very quickly. Let the chlorine zero out and algae will form. Go long enough and the pool will turn green. Or even if you add tons of chlorine to the pool but the water is not circulating, the pool will overtime turn green. And if you don't remove the dirt and leaves from the pool the water quality will also suffer. It is not hard to do but you need to be diligent and on top of these three things to be successful in your pool care.
Knowing your basic pool equipment is also essential. The pump is the heart of your system. If it is not running long enough or not running well, the pool can turn on you quickly in the Summer. Same with the filter. If it is not cleaned on a regular basis the water will not circulate properly. Knowing how the water flows into the pool and how the pool valves operate is also essential.
Testing the pool water weekly is a key part in keeping everything looking good. You should invest in a good test kit, one that does the basic four:
Free Chlorine or Bromine
pH
Alkalinity
Calcium Hardness
It is also a good idea to invest in a more advanced test kit so that you can
also test for:
Combined Chlorine
Acid Demand
Base Demand
Cyanuric Acid (CYA)
If you don't keep your pool water in balance all kinds of bad things can happen. It is actually quite easy once you get the hang of it so don't be scared if all of the terminology makes it sound like you need to be a scientist to get it right. You don't and it is easy.
One area that is often overlooked is cleaning your pool on a regular basis. If you don't have time investing in a good automatic cleaner can be a lifesaver. I have reviewed a good percentage of the cleaners on the market today and have an extensive video library on automatic cleaners. It is an investment but it will pay off in time saved and a clean pool each week.
If you don't have time or are physically unable to maintain your pool, hiring a good pool service company is the way to go. Each week your pool will be clean and balanced. In the long run it is worth every penny to avoid he headache of a pool that has turned bad on you. And if you are like my friend Ben and are thinking about doing pool service keep watching my videos or join my group on Patreon where I can give you one on one real time help.
Again, the eBook I created is a great resource that pulls everything together for you in one place. I can't stress enough that it is a great investment for you if you are a homeowner maintaining your own pool or new to the service industry.

Just subscribed and liked. Best video for beginners. I’ve watched 4 videos before finding this one. And this is by far the most detailed one. And you kept It real. I wouldn’t need a pool guy. But my dad would. Liked and subscribed
Thanks for the great feedback!
pool
I’m thinking about accepting a job in this field. I have an interview this Friday. Thanks for the crash course! I got a little worried when the manager says Jody applicants quit after the first month
@@SPL
I have a question
When you use pool pump to vacuum how do you clean filter? What setting do you use while vacuuming and can you back wash filter after?
😅
“This is a pool, of course.” Wait, you’re going to fast.
Hold on, let me write that down...
😂😂
Lmao I knew someone was going to say that lol x). Let me write that down killed me lmaoooooo! And when he said this is a pool of course , like no shit lol
Reminds me of rainman 😅😅 "of course this is a pool"
You'd be surprised how many folks would require that information to continue...
Thank you for posting this. My dad has a pool cleaning business he's maintained for over 20 years but he recently suffered a stroke that has left him paralyzed on his right side and unable to continue working. I've decided to take over the manual labor of it but I have no basis to learn from because he was very private. This is will be instrumental to keeping his business alive!
Hi Rebecca, sorry to hear that. Very tough situation. Hope he has a full recovery. Email me at david@swimmingpoollearning.com and I will give you a free copy of my eBook.
Most believable youtube story
Dave I just wanted to let you know that you have helped me tremendously over the past few years. I started Englewood Pool Care in Englewood Florida 2 years ago with only the knowledge from your videos and having my own pool for 5 years. I have learned so much from your experience and I am so grateful. I am now at a point where I am at full capacity with a customer waiting list making excellent money. You are a true blessing for anyone that needs this info. I just felt like I had to say thank you because this journey would have been much more difficult without your videos as a guide. You're the best! Thanks again.
That is awesome man! You are very welcome and I am glad that I helped you out. Thanks for sharing! 👍👍
Congratulations! I was a branch manager for a commercial pool company for 7 years and finally decided to go out on my own. I'm glad you are successful. I'm hoping for the same results.
I just started as a pool service tech and all of this is very helpful !! Very helpful especially for someone like me who has no pool background
“This is a pool, of course.”
LOL 😜
I’m just messing with you 😊. I appreciate the video.
Just bought a house with a pool and was clueless about all the components and maintenance.... but this video gave me alot more confidence maintaining myself .. thanks 👍🏽
As someone new to pool maintenance and just obtaining my CPO certification I really appreciate your tips. Thank you! I love the battery operated filter bag vacuum on the cart. So much easier than trying to prime a vacuum hose where I work. No turning several valves. So convenient!
I have been watching your videos since yesterday. I knew allot of stuff but the great indepth knowledge you into everything is super great I really appreciate all your videos greatly! I have a plaster company but for years I been trying to expand on the service maintenance side and now that I found your videos I feel more confident to do so. Thank you!
1. Chemistry
2. Circulation
3. Removal of debris/foreign matter
It’s called “The Three C’s of Pool Care”. You got 2 out of 3. Not bad
#3 should be CLEANING (vacuum, brush, backwash filter)
@@drdrew3 your video helped me so much, a true gem!
I love how you say "It's pretty basic" but it's kinda confusing when you first start. You give us great confidence 😂
Fantastic work! Thanks a lot for all the time in producing it and experience condensed in this video.
Starting a pool cleaning business.. I will continue to watch your videos and learn daily.. thank you!
Man, I watch your videos every now and again just to keep me inline with my pool maintence schedule. I have NO IDEA how I've missed the part about opening the filter to prime the pump... WOW, really... Thank you that's absolutely mind-blowing to me
Highly impressed with this video and the honesty. Great job!
One of my favorite high school Jobs was cleaning pools one summer. Will never forget when the wind changed directions and I got a full gasp of the acid as I poured it in. Butt puckering 😂
Just started cleaning pools with a friend I love it I can't wait to start my own pool business thank you for your wonderful tips
Hi I wanted to start pool maintenance here in middle East, can you help me how to begin. Thanks
Why would anyone give this guy thumbs down The information he shares spot on.
Jealous hacks I'm guessing
Thanks for the nice positive comment! Doing my best but like everything there are Trolls and Eggs out there. 👍
The only bit of constructive criticism for this guy that I have is that in this video he is running back and forth from different subject. The video would be better if he focused on one thing at a time
nckwrn yes. But as he said many time's this videos a quick guild for this other man looking to do pools as well as yards... We were told he has 5 years worth of pool service information..
Thanks for making this video. It was really helpful. We just purchased a new home with a pool for the first time. I'll be going through your channel regularly for a while to get a head start before we move in. Thanks so much again.

Extremely helpful, thank you! Just moved to the South and dealing with a pool for the first time. Trying so hard to learn what I'm doing, and now extra motivated because the service we hired is acting like we didn't pay them & pool guy is treating us like we're jerks☹️ Want to know how to care for the pool anyway, but sheesh....

Your channel helped me save $400 that’s what Leslie Pools would have charged me to unclogged my pool when my pool became clogged last weekend with the wind storm we had . I just followed the steps to unclog pool lines
This was the first video I watched after starting at pinch a penny pools in Florida and 6 years later I have my own company doing commercial and residential pools and bringing in 10k a month, thanks bro!
Great one, thanks a lot!!!
Great info. Thanks
Wow I cringed when I saw that pump basket lid buried under all those pipes. I can't believe you just bang at the sides like that, my hands hurt just watching. I get on the ground and use my feet if I have to haha. I've been cleaning pools in South Florida for 3 months now and I loved this video. The basics were explained really well. I wish my supervisors were that clear and organized when they trained me for 2 weeks. I really want to be good at my job and maybe even get into repairs someday. Will definitely buy your ebook, thanks dude!
Thanks Kristin!
I love this channel 👍🤗
I been working at least 2 days a week in pooling, helping my brother out. I knew most of this. But it really help me understand it better.

Great video, very helpful
Thank you for the info
Thanks great work
Going for my first training day tomorrow morning 🤞 hopefully one day have a few pools of my own…
Planning a move to Cambodia when our daughter starts college a pool won't be top of our to do list but it will be once we're settled & I can only imagine there's not many pool guys there plus I'll be doing everything for ourselves so I'm very thankful for all the information you have given off to watch as many video's as possible... I don't think our daughter would come out to us till we had a pool, she's not a fan of very hot countries & when abroad lives in the pool...
Sounds like a plan. 👍
Thanks for the info !
thank you for this video!
Glad you liked it. 👍
You Guide is very professional.
Thanks for the great video. I just purchased your eBook!
My favorite is when the gardeners use their leaf blower and blow everything into the pool.
And they always seem to do it right after you get done the maintenance.
This is one of the most first world complaints I've ever seen... I love it. I hope to be in the same position one day.
Penelope McQueen Go work as a pool tech. You can be in that position 20 times a day and only make 25k a year.
@@dannyboy768 if you're only making 25k a year you're doing it wrong
Take your picture before they start if you can
Great vid', thanks. Is there a diagram anywhere that shows the positions of the pump valves (on/off) for vacuuming, backwash and rinse??
All the owner’s manuals are online now. Can find any pump with a search in a minute or two.
I'm thinking about cleaning pools next summer. Thanks for sharing.
VIDEOS... I should have counted how many times.
Videos
great video thanks
👍
God I wish my clients would watch this. Can't tell you how many times they say I have a leak on the pressure side of my equipment and it's sucking air. Lol. No clue how it works. Good video and very well explained. I install a ton of automation with apps and it honestly is to difficult for most people to comprehend. I sometimes regret installing them as I spend to much time with it.
Thank you for your time in putting this video together! This is a fantastic video for beginners like me. Much appreciated. Great work!
I agree
Videos!
I have a question
When you use pool pump to vacuum how do you clean filter? What setting do you use while vacuuming and can you back wash filter after?
Thanks for the vid's
Sub....you're a great guy for making this easy for me to learn.
Are you still making videos?
