I absolutely love making this bag! I made 2 of them a few years ago for my older boys who were going away to work at summer camp for the summer, and today I came back to your video and made one for my third son going away to work at the same camp for the summer. Thank you for the clear instructions that I could easily follow along with.

Just discovered this video yesterday. This was by far the best and easiest tutorial on CZcams. I made mine out of leather, was a little harder and everything hand stitched, but it turned out so good! it looks like it’s bought from a high end store. Thanks again sir, I followed everything to a “T” and I was not disappointed. 👌🏾
I appreciate you posting this video. I will probably buy one of your dopp bags just to support, because I was so astounded somebody actually put up a free tutorial and didn’t try make money from it. You the real MVP John Crane.

Thanks Jon, Very helpful video. Truly appreciate you sharing your skills to help us hacks learn from professionals. Used your pattern and upscaled it to 24"x18" for a larger bag with a zipper pocket on the side. I didn't know where to start and your video was a basis for my new bag. I took me three trys, but each was a learning experience. Many, many thanks to you!

I noticed several questions about zipper placement, I wasn’t clear whether the zip teeth were placed facing up on the outer fabric. Zip teeth are always placed down toward the outside of the fabric so that when it’s sewn and flipped, the teeth are up and the outside of fabric is up.

Nice video. Just a word of advice. Keep an eye on that stamp. You really should grind the mushrooming off where you hit it with the hammer. Otherwise eventually a piece will break off, usually at very high speed, like a bullet.

Very true! That does need a trim. It got a lot of use stamping over 400 steel bunk bed parts I did for a big job. Hasn’t gotten touch up in a while. And come to think of it, I’ll cut that whole handle off and weld on a new solid bar. The piece on there now is hollow. It was just what I had around in the scrap bin when I made it. Thanks for watching!

How do I make my bags taller? I know it has to do with the corner cutouts but I cant seem to figure it out.

Great tutorial! Only question I have is with the zipper? Did you initially put it on the right side of the fabric on the wrong side of the zipper. I made a bag but the zipper ended up with the teeth down. Still works but want to make another the correct way. Thanks again, great video.

Right On! 🙌Thanks for watching! It all depends on the zipper. Some have a top and bottom and some can go either way. If the teeth have a direction the bottom should out before sewing. Then flip the bag inside out. It is nice to get those two way zipper then there is no worries. Hope that helps!

I want to make this style bag but bigger. I’m a lineman and we have rubber sleeve and glove bags. I’d like to make custom ones. 30” long 14” wide

This bag would be easy to change the dimensions. Would make a great bag for your gloves!!

Can this dopp kit be made with a domestic sewing machine?

#1. Use a roller to apply double sided tape. It will stick better.
#2. When sewing over the handles and pulls take piece of material folded over twice and sew a box “x” making a ramp so your walking can and put it under the rear of the walking foot (lifting the walking foot)and you will be able to sew those bulky areas and when coming down slip it under the toe of the walking foot and keep it moving towards you. But be careful you don’t sew your ramp to the project.

So do you actually make one at a time or do you do the same step on several at a time. Either way they’re great bags!

Right on Topper! 👍🏼 I made one bag just for the video but when making several bags I do one step at a time to all of the bags. Much more efficient and I feel the quality improves as well.
