You forgot Niners @ Saints Oct 8th 1989. It's the 3rd quarter with the Saints up 17-3. At their own 40, Joe Montana throw a rainbow to Jerry Rice, who catches it at the Saints' 22 and had a clear way to their 1st TD of the game, but Rice loses control of the ball at the Saints' 2, but the refs still counted it as a TD.
Fun fact Terry Bradshaw was my neighbor he has a house out here in Arizona. I wasn’t allowed over because I’m Halloween his wife will be making margaritas😂 My parents love them😂
Wow this happened a lot more than I was aware of.
Was going to comment this same thing
Same
It's always the white guys doin it too
I thought it was 1 or 2. This happens a lot.
One thing I would teach if I was a football coach... do not drop the football for any reason until you run through the back of the end zone. Even then, make sure a zebra has two hands in the air in the touchdown symbol before you drop the football.
Whenever I made a touchdown, I'd look at the ref and hand him the ball.
Worked both times.
@@TheWatchernator That works too.
The Barry Sanders technique: hand the ball directly to the ref after scoring. Guaranteed way to prevent this.
"Act like you have been there before" is the mantra I've always went by and would instill
Teach em to Gronk spike it every time
The self-inflicted Leon Lett play.
It doesn't come dumber.
I mean, Leon Lett's disaster was also self-inflicted....
@adiuntesserande6893 At least Leon Lett was actually holding on to the ball and Don Bebee had to knock it out to make him look stupid.
This ain't that...
Excuse me, I hate to interrupt but you have a call from a "Butt fumble" on line 1....
@@bobsnow6242 He might mean the other dumb play by Leon Lett. Trying to recover a dead ball, from a missed field goal, in the snow, to give the Dolphins a 2nd chance at the winning field goal.
That scene of everyone on the sideline freaking out at 12:17 is hilarious. Reminds me of the giant "STOP" sign that they unrolled for Forrest Gump.
another plot twist: That's the opposing team's sideline.
I'll always remember texting my brother, who is a Vikings fan, to let him know they drafted Jeff Gladney, and he was like "who tf is Jeff Gladney?" Little did we know at the time the kid ("kid" meaning four months my junior) only had two years left to live. Relationship trouble and high speed car crashes are two of the biggest pitfalls for fresh faces in the NFL, and this guy apparently stepped in both. RIP
Every single football coach should make this required watching.
Celebrate IN the end zone WITH the football. Not as you enter 😂
Better yet, give the ball to the ref, *then* celebrate.
These kids want to be like Deion
I'm a lifelong Ducks fan. This kind of mistake terrifies me.
2014 must've been a fun year for you
@@IsaacPunts Bearing in mind that you can't spell 'fun' without 'F-U', yeah....
What I don't understand is how you could see the Jackson play and think "Yes. That's something I want to do."
For the mediocre to average player who wants to have their name mentioned in the same sentence as Jackson, I guess that's the way to do it.
I don't get it. It's simple. Just hold on to the damn ball. The end zone is freaking 10 yards long. You can wait 5 more yards to drop the dang ball.
this has got to be the single most frustrating thing to see on a football field
Broncos fan here. When that play happened against the Ravens, one of the Broncos, who at the time was a star linebacker, jumped in to recover the football, and then he got injured for doing so. I was watching that live on TV as it happened. I was yelling "STUPID!!" at the player for dropping the football before the endzone.
Champ Bailey getting run down by Ben Watson was a rough one...
Every year it was ruled a fumble and ruling
1971: Steelers:touchback
2008: Eagles: POS at 1
2012: Kansas: POS at 1
2013: Broncos: touchback (1st instance called correct on spot)
2013: TTech: POS at 1
2014: Oregon: (1st time returned back by other team)
2017: TCU (1st time premature fumble team recovers their fumble for the score)
That's an immediate cut for me, you just can't do that and if you're selfish enough to make that mistake, you have no business playing.
You’re not cutting a prime deshawn jackson
👏👏👏
I hate these "look at me" plays and players
Common with certain types of players. They don't look like Peyton manning for instance. Elite athletes, but not so fond of the fundementals
Of all the people close to 100k this man def deserves it the most. Hang in there man I love your vids
I call it the Kaelin Clay play
Love this style of content from you Isaac keep it up 😭🤞🏾
Great video. It happened another time in 2021 that you didn't mention (probably because it's an obscure play and had no impact on the result of the game)
Western Kentucky @ Louisville, September 11th, 2021
early in the fourth quarter, Ahmari Huggins-Bruce ran 80 yards to score a 95 yard TD but dropped the ball 3 feet before crossing the goal line.
I believe I do have that one in there
@@IsaacPunts Oh crap you're right, nice job!! I was at that game with my mother and I was so excited to finally see that play happen live
Watching all these in a row rose my heart rate lol
As a rugby player, it boggles my mind how careless these players can be with the ball. It's like they forget they need the ball to accomplish the score.
Impressive research and video compilation!
I am typically here for punting content … but this topic is tremendous and an opportunity for a fuller documentary with interviews and such (by those who do that extensive work). Great job.
This was an excellent video man
I honestly think this has more to do with the increase in narcissism than anything. Our selfie-culture caused this.
you almost wonder why somebody made up a rule that you have to touch the ball down to the ground
fascinating video Issac, I like your editing style and your delivery is great. do more of these for sure
I definitely will
next level stuff ike
Thanks Brotha
You haven’t scored until you’ve scored
I knew DeSean would be featured. His special play has been admired by so many high school and college players that you can watch them imitating their idol on a frequent basis ;)
You didn’t have the one where Marcus Cooper on the Bears did it in the game against the Steelers. It was like 2017 or something
Congrats on that video sponsorship my man, love to see it
we are definitely up!
One thing that is mind blowing about the whole this is they had instant access to Replays on the broadcast and simply chose not to institute for soooo long.
great content!
I was at that game vs utah where Oregon scoop n scored. Went from heartbreak to elation in a second. Crazy season
Damn I didn't know Desean been dropping footballs at the 1 yard line for FIFTY THREE YEARS
Similar thing happened around that time with wide receivers dropping/throwing the football the instant their feet established in the end zone for a TD catch. I don’t believe it ever really cost anyone points, but I do believe that’s what Calvin Johnson was doing during the infamous “Calvin Johnson rule” non catch that threw the NFL into chaos for years to come.
The Utah one had the biggest consequence; completely changed the game.
As a Utah fan it was immaculate to get one of these plays back this season.
Since many comparisons about the amount of *time* in-between these incidents had been drawn in the video, I would’ve liked if the *time-line* that is on the top third most of this video was presented accurately.
I agree, something I have to do better next time
Helluva video!
i like to imagine there’s an invisible barrier forcing the ball to not cross the goalline
As a lifelong Oregon State fan, I call it the "Chad Johnson" drop. 😆
1:41 who drew that diagram!?
Derek Carr deserves an honorable mention here just for how many times he has turned the ball over on the 1 trying to run it in and fumbling out of bounds, which he did at least twice.
This is why Forrest kept on running.
I'll never forget watching Jackson in that all american game. Wild.
Good breakdown I.p.
Not sure about college, but in the NFL, this should be a finable play from the team. Make players pay a $50k fine and this stupidity goes away over night.
The Kaelin Clay Utah drop was probably the most damaging to the team. Utah went from being up 14 to having 60 points dropped on them 💀
It's not quite a Desean Jackson drop, but a Missouri player did drop the ball heading into the endzone in OT vs Auburn in 2022.
Ever since I saw this happen the first time, I promised myself that if I’m ever coaching a team and a player showboating costs us points, they’re getting benched until they learn to FINISH THE DAMN PLAY.
If I took a shot for every time I said wow during this video 🤦♂️I might’ve blacked out halfway thru ngl🤣🤣
Good one
Video starts at 1:40
As an Alabama fan, I remember the Mark Barron pick! He about gave me a heartastroke with that pick six. You know Coach Saban had his ass running that next practice
When I played (I'm old) we were told by our coaches to run and hand the ball to the ref AFTER we scored. Leave no doubts... I HATE WHEN PLAYERS DO THIS!!!
An odd clarification question:
Would you consider Marcus Cooper's fumble on the blocked FG (Bears/Steelers, 2017) a DeSean Jackson or a Leon Lett? It does have the defender involvement of the Leon Lett, but the stopping at the 2 yard line of the DeSean Jackson, so I'm not sure where it would be classified.
I saw that one and called it a Leon Lett
I'm not sure what year it was but Eddie Lacy did this on the Packers I was devastated as a kid
Dalvin Cook - FSU RB had an incidental situation like this. Worth checking out.
I think the Leon Lett play belongs in this category.
I still, years later, remember that mccloud drop at clemson. we are huge clemson fans and were not very happy that he did that...
Honey badger had another one the same season against Arkansas, but they didn't even review it. I think it was a punt return to end the half.
isaac the historian punts
12:04 man rip Jeff Gladney. Or, “TCU Gladney”
How'd we miss Jerry Rice? He rose his arms and lost the ball through the back of the end zone.
I need punting videos to get me into the mood. My lady would appreciate more punting videos.
I think you missed one of the more iconic DeSean Drops, and the first time I ever saw it...and it was by the GOAT himself. Jerry Rice did it in a game around 1990 at a game at Veterans Stadium in Philly, kind of.
The game is well known because it was a San Francisco comeback against Buddy Ryan's dominant defense. There is a legendary highlight overhead of Montana throwing the most beautiful pass to Jerry Rice in that day game with the light green astroturf visible. You see that highlight 100 times in a Montana or Rice highlight video.
However, earlier in that game Rice caught a TD and dropped the ball clearly on the one yard line, and it wasn't called. It was controversial at the time as Madden and Summerall rightly pointed out that it changed the whole tenor of the game.
Any die-hard SF fans or a more rabid NFL fan than myself might know what I'm talking about. I was stunned it wasn't in your video, to be honest. In fact, I think Jerry Rice did it on more than one occasion and it wasn't called. Like almost every other controversial play in the 1980s and early 1990s, they always seemed to go SF's way.
I almost included that one but I didn't want this video to be about normal celebrations that accidents happened on and more about just this specific dumb type of celebration. I only included the '71 play for the historical aspect.
It's a lack of discipline that I think rests with the coach (not totally- but it starts there)
IDK there were 2 Alabama plays in there, arguably one of the most disciplined teams
Never ever let go of the football till you are sure they signal touchdown. If I was a coach and a player did this I would immediately bench them regardless of if they are a star.
If I were a coach, I would say this:
"You guys are allowed to do all these stupid team celebrations. You are grown men, Big Boy Rules apply. I don't like it (because there is a right and a wrong way to play the game), but the minute any of you gets an excessive celebration penalty, then it stops, and no team celebrations are allowed.
And if any of you drops a ball early like our young friend DeSean (a player with gang connections who has never been told no in his life), then the new mandatory team rule is that you have to hand the ball to the official after every touchdown instead of dropping it. No exceptions.
I'm happy to treat you all like men until your stupidity and selfishness starts costing us points as a team."
"A theme in his career I'm sure won't become incredibly common"
I need to get Manscaped another great video tho😭😭😭
So cool the way you made modern sports footage look like a shitty, grainy Charlie Chaplin movie.
Said no one ever.
my dad is a huge eagles fan and I remember him being so upset about it and he said they lost the game because of it
These are some of the stupidest plays I have ever seen. I knew about the Desean Jackson ones, but I didn't realize this idiocy was spreading.
This points to a lack of discipline. And it's not just dropping the ball, the uniforms in the pros show a lack of discipline with some players wearing solid white all the way to the knees while others on the same team have solid dark from shoes to the knees. And wearing the jersey not tucked in. The fact that they are allowed to get away with these things is why I can no longer watch the NFL.
I mean he also has the greatest game ending punt return of all time
10:08 WILLIAM AND MARY MENTIONED RAHHHH
There is one in 2022 I'm aware of. NFL week 2 cardinals vs raiders last play of the game in ot byron murphy jr pick 6.
Sorry to hate on you for this but, it’s KANSAS STATE. NOT KANSAS. I could never be a Jayhawk in my life. Just a note for the future. Please don’t mess that up again. Allot of people take it way seriously. Thanks!! 6:52
Thank you! I was like "he did NOT just do that!"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't gain yards on a fumble. So all of those plays fumbled on the 1 and then recovered by the same player or a teammate should have gone back to the 1.
On 4th down, a fumble may only be advanced by the fumbling player.
This is a cultural problem of players being too damn cocky
8:50 pretty sure that after this Whittingham made it a rule on the team that you must give the football to the refs or drop it at the back of the end zone. As such Utah hasn't had a problem with it since.
Also i was at that game and everyone was confused and once we found out, we let that player know our anger.
Oh and 14:10 watch 52 at the end of that replay. He had his head in the game. Shame we barely lost that game.
Desean Jackson is one of my favorite players ever but damn bro cmon
Swag in all it’s glory 👏🏻
I saw the Tilley play on Monday night football.
Ive talked about rhis with friends and i brought up that what if this is an inside dare to fumble at the 1 and act like you scored. They all say no way give up a score but i disagree watch close they all act the same its a badge of honor. No way so many do exactly same way and if they ever seen ut they would make ure to fully cross. Im not crazy i say its a big fun thing they do
Love it! Only suggestion is highlight the years in a different color when talking about them on the timeline. Keep up the awesome work, you're getting a heck of a lot better at everything!
Thanks brother! Yeah I tried a couple different things but couldn't get it to look good but I agree
How the hell did you find all the ones that went unnoticed by refs?
I would start coaching players to actually perform the name of the score and touch down the ball for a touchdown which comes from rugby.
I think this strarted happening a lot when they started cracking down on celebrating
I can understand why this is called "Jacksoning" but I think it also be called "Oregoning" since they've been prime offenders for this over the years.
If I'm a coach and you do this, you sit the rest of the game and the first half of the next one. You make this bad decision once. Anyone else on the team does this, they're cut.
You forgot the Ed Reed in like 2000 I think maybe 1999?
How about of forced fumbles by defence at the 1 e.g. Metcalf during game with Pats.
Didn’t dk metcalf have one recently like 2019 or something?
I call it the Brown play as a gamecocks fan.
I don’t want to assist, let alone, know about my dad’s ball hair.
Has it occurred to anyone that these aren't "mistakes", but meant to happen? How many times did they make these "mistakes" in college? 0. So, why all of a sudden? It's because they plan it during their "practices". Plenty of time to focus on scripts.
