    Yup! 2004 and 2005 BDL-PBI. My family and me were the perfect targeted demographic. We had actually booked a flight through Delta and they asked if we wanted to flysong (lol) instead for a refund in fare difference. They won my family over with the leather, yummy snax, colorful cabins/logo and seat back screens. Very fun airlines to fly on short eastern seaboard vacation trips. Loved em back then.

    I was under the impression that Song was folded by Delta more so because they restructured Delta as a whole, and didn't fold Song because it failed. The 757 might have been too much plane at the time, but I think the airline served it's purpose until LCCs suddenly appeared in the form of jetBlue with newer and more efficient and right sized airplanes to compete. Delta as well as USAir didn't want to invest that much into their LCCs by adding brand new airplanes to their fleet and sacrifice their mainline fleets. Song was a good product at the time and gave us NYers a good way to fly to and from FL.

    • @vondahe
      @vondahe Před 4 lety

      benrgrogan Of course a smaller aircraft is easier to fill than the 752 but their preference for these newer aircraft is mainly down to fuel economy.

    I never flew Song. All my flights were with Delta. Here was the problem with Song: It was too expensive. I literally tried to fly Song on business trips. The fares were NOT competitive with low-cost carriers like Southwest, Jet Blue and AirTran. It served me well (financially) to stick with Delta, despite Song being a part of the Delta family. I was happy when those Song 757's became a part of the Delta fleet. An airline within an airline can't work, unless you have pilots and flight attendants on a lower wage scale. The other problem is that elite F/F flyers expect upgrades to first class. When you eliminate first to destinations, even if they are primarily leisure-oriented, it irritates the elite flyers.
    In the late 90s, American's pilots suggested the concept during contract negotiations. COO Don Carty rebuffed the idea, arguing that American had a brand that stood for a high level of service, and the airline within an airline would compromise the brand.

    Problem is with the majors they charge too much for their flights. Many tried the airline within an airline, like TED and United. It dont work cause the cost of doing business is still there. With all the mergers, it drove up cost of flying, and cost of crews and maintaining the aircraft. Competition works best and SWA is showing the others that.

    I never flew Song, but I flew on a former Ted plane. Far nicer than the standard fare. When they announced Song's demise, some exec from Song stated that the reason why Delta wanted to cut the carrier (besides the contract issues, I was an ALPA pilot and they can be ridiculous), was because Song was doing better than mainline Delta, and the mainline Delta execs were pissed. For years, the mainlined carriers had fought improvements to the cabins like those in Song, and when Song proved that customers wanted those improvements and was outselling mainline Delta on similar routes, Delta hated it.

Song was flown by Delta pilots, unlike the FA debacle that had Delta FAs giving up their Delta seniority and pay rates to work for Song.
      Song operated at a LOSS from day 1. Granted, Delta's bankruptcy destroyed their opportunity for taking a valid shot a JetBlue and the other LCCs, they were not shut down because they were "outperforming Delta.

    For those of us in the know, the B757 was too large of an aircraft for the types of missions Song was flying. At most, barely 2.5 hours between Boston and South Florida, they needed to fill every seat to make it worthwhile as there were no premium seats; basically the B757 was too much airplane. Song was meant to be a fun, stylish and somewhat whimsical brand that went to primarily leisure destinations, but it costs a lot to have a subfleet within your fleet especially when the fleet type used is expensive to operate. Eventually Delta realized they could best fight the likes of JetBlue and Southwest by just making their domestic offering better, which is essentially what they did when the Song aircraft were repainted and rebranded back those of the mother airline. Fast forward to today and Delta mainline and JetBlue have the best domestic products in the country, in my opinion, whereas Southwest has the most consistent product.
    Song was a failed experiment in that it didn't generate any significant profit and it doesn't take starting an airline-within-an-airline to understand that customers like IFE, nice seats and a friendly crew.
