Same here, in BC as well! Really nice perspective! Excited to start end of the month! Going to keep these things in mind as it seems like I’ll be starting out on a large commercial project. Thank you! Would love to see a video on your experience getting your red seal ticket in BC!
Or a video on the breakdown of what you learn in each year of schooling?
      Thank you

Thank you for sharing. I started my apprenticeship in the union, and left after the first year because there is a surprising amount of inflexibility in the union program unfortunately. I would only recommend joining the union AFTER you journey out.

Great info. As a Journeyman Industrial Electrician, I would add that try and find a smart nice Electrician to mentor under. I learned 90% of what I know from one kind now retired electrician

I am 28, got my red seal 2 years ago, been through both union and non union, and even quit being an emplyee and did my own contract for a good 6 months, union work feels like factory work, for example, i was in a hospital roughing in, one guy bends pipe, next guy cuts and ream, next guy install, pay is good, but i lose my mind, non union feels different, i worked high rise as a non union, you need to know a bit of everything distribution, fire alarm, rough in finishing, trouble shooting, motor control, even a bit of automation and PLC knowledge wad helpful on occasions, does not pay as well, but has the potential to surpass union pay if you become the top sparky of the team, youll have leverage to negotiate, overall they are both fun for me, meet a lot of friends, but i would like to be fully self employed one day

Love what you said about gaining knowledg. I worked in an independent automotive shop for a year and a half when I first started while some friends went dealership. They struggled when they left the dealership because they focused on one area and brand.

I'm a 2nd year union apprentice at a steel plant. So it's on the industrial side of things and high voltage. Apprentices will rotate to each steel mill on the plant. We do alot of lock outs including on the 6900v breakers and alot of troubleshooting. the plant is over 150 years old and we run alot of DC power as well. I love it. And I bought a full set of Klein Mod Boxes cause of your post on instagram. I use them to transport all my tools when I rotate to one mill to another.

I'm Portuguese/European so things work a bit different here when it comes to education. From "Year" 7 you can choose to go into a trade school or you can do regular middle and high school, that also have trade options and then go to University or a Technical Bachelor. Uni is either free or up to about 900 per semester depending on the country and after that you do an internship where you are expected to know at the very least the basics of your given trade.
I have a bachelor in Automation and Industrial Controls and I've worked in factories, fulfilment centres (think Amazon warehouses), Power Generation and Distribution at the Core Grid (400kV) level and now I'm in Data Centres where they can't get enough from me. My personal advice is try to go to an industrial environment. Construction and Facilities might get you an easy job but it will not help you build up your skills. Fixing the lighting in an industrial environment is treated as "hazing" and the thing that you NEED to just get it done with no questions asked or guidance. Also, in an industrial environment you'll learn about automation, controls, PLC's, etc and those are skills that then are transferable to home and facilities automation etc. Sensor calibration for instance is something simple to do, but you probably won't do it in construction or general lighting works. Also understanding how "smart devices" communicate nowadays is a must. It's not all Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Our lords and saviours at Siemens also gave up Profibus. 😆
Hope this helps and if you have questions I'll be more than happy to answer.

Very interesting. I do a little bit of everything, so working in residential seems an easy transition out of my trade school program, which is over in 9 months. I'm in the USA. But, if I'm honest, I want to work on big stuff. And stuff like solar research projects, wind, new tech, industrial, even aerospace. I like big loud toys and experiments. I want to pursue a college degree but would like to establish my income first. I'm still trying to figure everything out, but there are a lot of jobs that do not count as an Apprenticeship. So I'm trying to figure out how I'll be spending my first few years.

    •  Před 9 měsíci

@@greyfreeman5537 I think you're on the right track. Having a degree is definitely helpful and will open quite a few doors, but having time with tools in hand is also equally relevant if not more. For aerospace and other more niche industries a degree will most likely be a requirement.

So true what you said about starting out in Residential first. Ive been in the trade 32 years and counting and i started in Residential for 5 years and transitioned to commercial. Ive worked with guys that started in commercial first and their skill-set was not as strong and you can definitely see the difference in their work. Love to see young folk get in the trades and i agree with ya start in Residential first to get that foundation and skill-set. Keep doing your thang Karly!

I've been an apprentice since I was 16. I'm 26 now. Don't ask. Just don't Lmfao. I'm going in for my test next month. I've already been running my own truck for years. So it's all kinda backwards instead of forwards for me. I never had a clear straight line for my life. But I kinda do now. I might make a video on it for the guys who are self learning.
