My motivation for Clones is the following reasons:
    1. It's a starting point for experiencing the OG before one commits to investing in the real deal, especially for very expensive brands.
    2. It can be the only option for someone on a budget, especially these days when original niches and high-end designers are eye-wateringly expensive (inflations, acquisitions, regulations, capitalism, etc!)
    3. Clones may be all you got for experiencing a discontinued fragrance, especially if it's a fan favorite!
    4. In some parts of the world, Clones may also be the only option (economy, policy, diplomacy, geography, etc)
    5. Clones can play "second fiddle" to OGs in order to help preserve the latter, especially if very expensive, no longer available, very difficult to get, or very much cherished.
    6. Most people outside of the fragrance community can't tell the difference (only "you" know! 😅), so people can camouflage with them!
    7. Some Clones can be perfectly layered with the OG (like CDNIM vs AVENTUS), and by keeping the number of sprays of the OG fewer, thus preserving it.
Ashley, these are some of my personal reasons for going after Clones, imho, which may not necessarily be true for everyone, but definitely, some of the reasons are true for most people. Keep Looking and Smelling Great. Thanks for stimulating the discussion. 👍

Also some people buy dupes because it’s what they can afford and it’s close to smelling like what they love on top of just if you smell good.. you smell good. Personally for me i have a little of everything in my collection. Sometimes if i try a dupe i really love i get the original. For instance i originally brought Rosendo Mateu No. 5 as a dupe from Dapper’s Frangrances and i literally loved it so much i brought the real bottle and it’s definitely a tad different from the dupe but I’m in love and it justified me spending 225 on another bottle of perfume as a perfume addict lol so I’m not against dupes because at the end of the day mostly every company has no integrity… and all of these fragrances are overpriced.

I only buy dupes of things I can no longer buy originals of. That situation works great, because I'm working off the memory of a discontinued scent. That way, I don't have it to compare side by side and find flaws. It also means that the dupe isn't in direct competition for sales with the original, since the og is no longer being sold.

Great topic and great video Ashley. I was hoping you would go more into the compositions of dupes vs originals , as in how much of the exact ingredients do dupes actually use(also the quality of the perume oils and synthetics used ) but I suppose you touched on that in a roundabout way ie the dupes smelling cheaper. I have been collecting for a long while now and have purchased tons of dupes especially early on and can say honestly none of them replace the original. There have been times in fact where I can absolutely tell the quality is so subpar and screechy. Yes they smell similar but they are not the same. I also agree with the sentiments below that the only occasion dupes make sense is when the original is disontinued.

Great work Ashley! I personally don't support clones but there are exceptions i make like the reason on Lost Cherry (also doesn't last on me) unfortunately i can not help you with the perfect dupe of it but i have three fragrances that share the direction of Lost Cherry and are good enough for me to replace it.
    Bodacious from Boadicea the Victorious
Blessed Baraka from Initio (On my skin it is similar i can not explain it)
And Kayali's Lovefest Cherry is good enough for me to not think about Lost Cherry

I own hundreds of bottles. I own originals and Dappers and have done side by side comparisons. The reason I love Dapper is because he DOES dupe all the hit fragrances from small niche houses that are super expensive. He doesn’t do the mass produced designer fragrances other dupes companies do. And the fragrances are phenomenal!! Many times it’s an improvement (like longevity of Lost Cherry, making Feve Delicieuse more gourmand and powerful, giving longevity to Byredo, etc).
I’ve discovered there is definitely a place for good dupe companies. Alexandria is exceptional as well.

For me, my best dupe is Armaf Sillage which copies Silver Mountain Water. I honestly dont know how SWM smells like as i honestly dont want to spend for even a decant of a fragrance thats already watered down. Still, i hope it does smell close without smelling cheap as it has amazing performance on me.

I don't make a habit of choosing to buy dupes and I only own one "inspired by" fragrance. That is of a Kilian because I refuse to pay £200 for 50ml (£4/ml) from an Estee Lauder owned brand. I have paid that pricepoint for a true niche/independent brand but I got a 100ml for that (£2/ml). It's just not justifiable or worth it to me to pay over £2.50 per ml 🤷‍♀️ thanks for the video 💕

Usually most dupes reproduce only the main accords and leave behind the complexity of the fragrances. Which is also due to the fact that reproducing the formula exactly may be expensive or cause there are technical limitations in what the GC-MS can detect. Interesting video, thank you!

I have dual’s version of Rive Gauche which is a discontinued fragrance. I own Rive gauche in both the glass bottle and tin can but I know that once it’s gone it’s gone. I honestly enjoy the dua version a bit more the smells are very close but the Dua is a higher concentration it lasts longer and is somehow a bit richer. I think it’s so well done that I’ve bought several bottles if my rive gauche runs out at least I have this. I still wear my original because I believe in wearing my frags. I use the original when I walk out the door and bring the Dua in case I need to touch up later in the day.

I have many designer and niche fragrances in my wardrobe as does my wife. Here's when I have zero issues buying a dupe instead of the real thing...I tried a sample, an expensive sample, of Tiger by Boadicea The Victorious. I really loved it and my wife liked it on me. I was watching Sarah's Glam Finds YT channel and in one of her videos she mentioned that Dapper has a nice dupe of Tiger. So I picked up a 30 ml bottle. Was it 100% Tiger? No, but it was close and had great performance. Most of all, I spent $35 and not the ludicrous $1,000 USD BTV wants for Tiger. With that much of a price gap between the dupe and the original, it's a no-brainer for me.

Your conversación with us about this topic is very informative. My first dupes were from Dua but many I never smelled in its original form. Now, I suffer from the I cannot smell anything on me syndrome and Dua typically is very strong and long lasting, so that is what kept me as a customer. I am going to do the comparison between say a famous vanilla and a Dua version and get back to this comment. Merci, Ashley. Bon dimanche.

I appreciate your perspective here. I think that the word is overused and many times what people say is a dupe is just a reminder of the original, with differences. Baccarat Rouge 540 certainly has many fragrances that are following its lead, but perfumers put their own spin on the medicinal saffron. For an example, Montale and Mancera both have fragrances that are BR540 like and I found I preferred the Mancera over the Montale and the original. Subjective little game we play here.

I think clones are a good option for the following reasons:
    1. Price: Salaries vary and there are people who will never own a Tom Ford, for example, because of their limited budgets. A clone will be close enough and they get to smell good for a few dollars.
    2. Cruelty free: There are those who won't buy fragrances that have, as either the final product or its ingredients, been tested on animals or sold in a country that requires animal testing such as China. A few will even argue that to inflict pain and death on an animal just to smell good is a huge character flaw or ethical deficiency from what I've read.
    3. Clones can improve the fragrance profile just by enhancing one note. For example, a more potent pineapple in an Aventus clone. Or the opposite where an odd note is removed thus making it more mass appealing while everything else stays the same.
    4. I don't have a fourth reason 😁

I recently bought Dossier dupes due to health reasons. Dossier does not add endocrine disruptors (parabens, phthalates etc) nor colorants to their formulations/inspirations. They're in transit and soon I'll see whether they work for me or not. I've spent a small fortune on well-known scents, but now they give me headaches. It's not worth it for sb like me who also wants to stay healthy. I still spend money, but now I buy Commodity scents, no parabens, phthalates, sulfates in their formulations ... and I'm happier for it tbh. Yes, these cleaner perfumes don't last as long as the ones by the big perfume houses, but that's because they lack the dirty ingredients that make the scents long lasting. Just my two scents, but everyone is free to do as they see fit.

I would really like to hear your opinion on Eden perfumes. They make vegan, cruilty free, affordable alternatives to well known perfumes (both designer and niche). They also have some personal creations.
I didn't smell them side by side, but to me they smell like they are on the same theme with the originals but definitely not near identical. I can for sure tell the difference even going with the memory.
I do however love the brand for their values as well as their scents. If anything, I'll say that the differences make their perfumes more original.

Some dupes I've smelled are not at all like the original to me, but even the few ones who are lack so much depth and/or complexity! It's like the difference between a painting and a printed image of it. Buying dupes, to my opinion, is only worth it if you don't know the original, or don't know it that much and happen to like it, but not LOVE it. I sometimes buy cheapies, for what they are. Some might have elements of resemblance to famous fragrances, but concerning the obvious dupes, I've always been disappointed.

Instead of buying a dupe people can invest the money spent on it and buy a decant of the original instead. At least then you can wear what you actually love. Plus the decant site sell in multiple sizes meaning you can go from a sample to a legitimate travel sizes spray. They often have good sales of 15% or more around major holidays making them even more affordable

The majority of the dupes I've tried are exactly as you described: pretty convincing on initial application, but after 10 minutes you can tell you're wearing a cheaper perfume. They don't have as much nuance in the heart + base.
Still, some are worth it to me because you can have something similar to the original and save a lot of money. I actually slightly prefer Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely to Narciso Rodriguez for Her. It's a bit smoother and softer, and I don't mind it being linear.

100%. They all go for the opening. I bought both Arabian Horse & Tobacco Noir Intense (Herod clones), and both of them hit you with the same tobacco opening, but it's immediately apparent that the spice/sweetness combo in the heart of Herod is completely missing. You can immediately smell the difference just by smelling the bottles. This is in complete contrast to many reviews of both dupes which say they are the same or better.

When I first was really getting back into fragrances I went on a dupe journey. Mostly with oils from Oil Perfumery here in Canada. It was a fun and easy way to explore the different scent profiles and a few of the oils remain in my collection and completely hit the spot… but as time went on I began to smell more originals and I realized that I wasn’t happy have a less-than version…. There was often something missing.
I’m now lucky to have found a wonderful online group where we swap and sell decants to each other. At this point I’d much rather have a 5 or 10 ml decant than a dupe and often that is enough for me… but if I really fall in love with a scent I’ll splurge on the full bottle.
The oil dupes still smell lovely and a few I wear and love. The others I use to scent my vacuum filters, floor wash solution etc etc. My home smells lovely when I clean and I don’t feel like anything is going to waste lol.

Here’s a different perspective I’ve yet to see in these comments. Which is unfortunately people can’t afford these high end scents or don’t wanna work hard to save up for them, therefore they trick themselves into thinking a dupe is “just as good or better” when then truth is it’s not.if a dupe makes you happy then great but in reality it would never amount to the real thing!

I think there are so many perfumes, a perfumer cannot know them all; yet people want to make something appealing or something around an idea. Similar results are logical. Of course, people also look around and see what works for others.
Some people throw around dupe too fast. For example, I haven't ever bothered with Aventus, but I do have Montblanc Explorer and Cedrait Boise. I find them easy to keep apart.
People who scream dupe or clone too fast, just want to be elitist fragrances snuffs. Or keep up with the elite.

I agree with you about your views on dupes. A couple years ago I started getting a bunch of dupes/clones and then eventually got rid of just about all of them. I started to realize that in most cases, the dupes/clones are usually much more monotone. They often lack the depth and character of the original. They often amplify the base notes so they’ll have good longevity and projection, but they’re linear and never as complex.
However, I will say that there are cases where fragrances will be inspired by other fragrances but make some variations and keep it high quality, and sometimes these can be even better than the original. Some “inspirations” that I like are Electimuss Auster vs Blue Sapphire or Electimuss Trajan vs BR540.

  • @mymy4110
    @mymy4110 Před rokem

    Reasons I buy Clones
    1. Price - take the most expensive perfumes divide by a factor of 10-20 and you will know the real cost of the ingredients as an example
MFK BR has large portion of synthetic ambroxan which is so cheaply manufactured.
    2. Reformulations and dilutions that rip off the consumer (changing the ingredients and smell without telling the consumer of the change)
    3. Discontinued
    4. Backup
    5. It is legal - Designer companies and Niche brands do it to each other all the time.
Having said that to be intellectually honest
There is one major source of concern - health safety that is serious carcinogens/fertility etc -- and I don't mean the fake concern Chemical Companies in Europe concoct about so called allergies and sensitivities.

Great and honnest content Ashly. I rarely try to find cheaper dupes. I used to do so, but after some dissapointments like you described so well, I just safe the money and buy the original. True, they often are more expensive, but for good reason. Most of the times it's the ingredients used and offcause sometimes the name. By the way, I don't wear scents which are hyped, or are on the market due to a big marketing campaign... although some had back in the days. About half of my collection was released before 2000.

Maybe they didn't have gas chronometers back then but my first experience with dupes was in the 80s people trying to dupe things like Polo Green and they were no where near the originals. Or maybe a lot of newer fragrances list like 9 notes tops usually. A lot of those older ones have more than that listed just as base notes lol. So was it the grocery list complexity of notes to achieve those old fragrances that made them hard to dupe?

Yep, they thought it was Cloud 😂😂 So, I have gotten tired of the whole scent profile of BR540 along with all it's dupes, and also the Coco Mademoiselle , not the dupe,, the original, I have smelled it on everybody for years now.
I will not wear a perfume that everybody else wears, so I recently changed to Chanel Allure as a signature scent .. with great success !!!
I do not have to worry about the price tag, I get 1 bottle from 3 joint siblings at Christmas of whatever fragrance I prefer,, and then one for my birthday in April from my husband,, year long tradition, it works well, receiving fragrances as gift is so much nicer than purchasing it for myself 🙂

Dossier’s dupe of Louis Vuitton L’Immensite, Aromatic Ginger, is better than the original (IMO, of course), and I own the original. There’s something in certain fragrances (L’Immensite, Meteore, Aqua Sextius, all of the YSL Y line, ADG Profumo, Encre Noire, and many others) that reacts with my skin and gives a slight dead fish smell, which is obviously repulsive. It’s REALLY frustrating because I’ve tried to find the common denominator, to no avail. I thought it was a note, or a combination of notes, but not the case.
Luckily for me, Aromatic Ginger doesn’t do this, which is a plus, since I love the L’Immensite scent profile.

Silver Mountain Water , for example, is pathetic compared to when it was created. Club de Nuit Sillage actually smells like Silver Mountain Water originally smelled like. Majority of clones are rubbish in comparison to the real versions however. Very few are on a par quality wise with the real version. Arianna Grande’s “ cloud “ is maybe 50or 60% similar to BR540 . Cheaper watered down version using lesser quality elements.
