+Tania Flores You guys totally missed it. Think of the way they act and react to each other over the heart. They are cold and heartless and therefore they can't abide sharing and caring for each other. They see and care only for their needs and do whatever it takes to have what they desire, the Heart, but they don't know what it means to have a heart so they tear each other to pieces over it, losing all in the end. A very accurate, well made depiction of our world today i think. This however should be classed as a horror.

I really think it's about a person who finds love and happiness in their life, which is symbolized by his heart. The other people around him, who on the contrary have not found happiness yet, get jealous of his simplicity and innocence, so they are selfish enough to try to still it. The girl represents someone he loved but not enough to give her his heart. At first she gets really sad because she wants to be his everything, she definitely wants his heart, and then she also tries to steal it (she does everything she can to get his heart). In real life this happens a lot... How many times we see someone so pure and happy that it can make others depressed and jealous to a point when they try to make the person feel as bad as they feel? after that, comes anger, stress, and his thoughts get corrupted by all this. In the end the guy ends up by losing that bit of happiness, just like everyone else. The animation is beautiful

The baby has the heart, the parents are fighting for it, maybe they are fighting for the love of the kid? At the point of the huge general fight, I think that the metaphor went too far for the symbols to keep up XD

Never to rest or just to avoid.
The constant masses of greed and lust,
But desperate defines, a broken trust.
Every core that's yearn of wanting,

I think the heart symbolizes happiness. People fight and die in order to acquire and keep it, but by the time the dust settles it's lost to them, and only those who didn't participate in the fight can benefit from it. It's a cycle that's perpetually repeated.

From an interview with Erick Oh:
    4. Tell us what “Heart” is about and where the idea for your film came from.
One day I was watching news about political issues and started asking myself why we are destroying one another. Human history shows that life is full of conflicts and struggle. Heart is an 8 minute animated short containing no dialogue. It tells the story of abstract creatures who battle over a heart which symbolizes various differing values in life such as religion, wealth, love, natural resources and so on. In the end, their mixture of desire and greed over the heart leads to their destruction. However, the end is very open ended because it asks the question, ‘what if we approached things differently’. This film doesn’t contain any answers, instead it’s a huge question directed to everyone .

Everyone wants emotions, love, compassion and gratification but some "monsters" will try to steal that from them. Even your loved ones can be monsters after your heart.
And yet after you do anything it takes to protect your heart from others, you have become the biggest monster of all, and you have no use for the heart anymore.

  • @crashstart
    @crashstart Před 8 lety +130

The heart is different for every being. I noticed this I'm the difference between the man and woman and even in the giant blob. The man kept the heart just on his head but notice the woman showed it affection and seemed to "sucks face" with it. She clung on and wouldn't let go. Then the blob coming from the woman struck me as a maternal/mother type figure, protecting the heart from everyone like a child. I also noticed the color contrast how the heart is the only colored obkect, at first I thought for style but this may be a metaphor itself. It's a bright part of a colorless world, a happy place if you will. That's why they all want it so badly. This is obviously about greed and how far people will go to hold on to what makes them happiest in a awful world. We're entitled to greed in a place like this. In the end, holding on might just destroy you. The last scene I believe is definitely his suicide, and it breaks my heart. This was stunning.

Ok what about that (my own view of this) - the heart was happines, as we know every individual seeks personal happines and when he finds it he tries to keep it, keeping it becomes the purpose of his life. He fights everyone who tries to steal his happines (those were the people that dont have any purpose in their lifes). The man was so into defending his happines that he didnt understand it was linked with the woman's from the moment they met. In the moment he pushed her away thinking he got it back he actually lost it and became just as empty as the other ones, like he never existed... And then someone else is gona go to the same path cos you probably saw the end and the begining are the same.(its interesting... were the ghouls that atacked him people that didnt know happines or did they lost it the same way the man did and became ugly and more and more humanless :)

I think you are pretty much right, but the creature-things usually started out pretty human. Maybe when their 'hearts' harden, or they get angry, they become deformed. Notice the part when the persona defeated the first creature at 2:03. His head became more and more deformed as he cursed her, until the woman comes and pats him on the back. In the first moments of their meeting, he shields his heart from her. But then it was forgotten and flops back, and his head goes back to normal. When they connect, and were battling for the heart, his head remains normal, and as they were both trying to reach it, their head matter makes a heart shape behind it. When another creature tries to get at it, the woman sends a huge matter to protect it, and then they did nothing, like it was ok to share it, or there was no way they could be happy when they are apart. At the end, the woman's head explodes in anger when the persona pushes her away, and desperately tries to protect her heart (or happiness) from him now. In the end, because he ripped away the happiness from the sticky mess that was created, and was lost in it.

Excellent music choice, riveting ideas, and satisfying yet mysterious ending. It can be read in many ways, depending on the person.
I saw it as this: Every man is given a gift. Those who have not found theirs often feel insecure and jealous. We all must find, hone, and utilize our gift, careful not to ruin what we are given. What happened here was exactly that. The man found his gift and used it. Others saw it and grew jealous. In the end, the man fought for his gift, regained it, and passed it to someone else.

Ok so I think it's about how you find love and trying to protect it from other people in your life. In the beginning you've found this love inside, then you find someone, they want you to let them in (have the heart) but you're scared you'd rather keep it to yourself so as a couple you fight. Then someone special seems to come along and you think 'yeah I could give my heart to her' while still keeping a close eye on it. But looking back at your past relationship you get scared again and try to get your heart back but there's a fight. I think when all these people start attacking the main character it represents all the people you end up finding in your life and shunning, never letting them in. Always you're still reminded of when you did give your heart to someone and they wouldn't let go. So finally you push away the one person who wanted to share your love and end up alone. Hanging yourself in a tree made of failed relationships and littered with corpses of what could have been.

The violn music part is "Atomos VII - A Winged Victory for the Sullen".
Such an incredible track and incredible short film. Erick Oh got hired by Pixar immediately after he released this movie. From his interview he says the movie symbolizes life, and life cycles that people get trapped into. Heart is a symbolic representation for many things in our lives. From love, happiness, or/and success. Once you started to be successful, you have to live with life's pressures, because success is as much of a burden as to wish for it. It comes with a great responsibility. Our decisions to survive, keep our success, or sacrifice by giving and sharing is what determines the maintaining of success. Whatever it is, Oh's work made me cry like a little bitch. He's good.

After reading the description and some of the comments, and thinking about it, I think what it means to me is that when we chase after an ideal or a philosophical thought or even love, we show it to others and then we get jealous that they decided to keep it so then us and everyone around us fight over it and eventually, when we have it back, it doesn't mean anything anymore. So we just drop it and leave for the next person to find.

Just like this film, love is confusing. It can be consuming, it can break you apart, you can lose parts of yourself to others, sometimes forever, all in the name of love. You will fight for what you think is yours, even if it is not, for the sake of love. And if what you love proves to be a sink of your time and effort and emotion, and does not reciprocate, you can lose yourself completely, and wither away, and die, all for the yearning for love. There is a lot of emotion in this film.

This is so lovely. I love how it implies as long as this heart exist, this will keep happening over and over. I wonder what's evil, the lone heart that everyone desires and cannot be shared, the creatures who want to possess it, or this is just simply something that happens in nature.

I think this portrays the rise and fall of mankind. They say power and love are the two major things that induce conflict, so the heart is coveted in this film and everyone else challenges eachother for it until the strife becomes the end of them all whereas they could have shared it peacefully.. it wasnt just him that died... they all did, as you could see. The heart slipped from his hand when all came to an assumed end, but infact it merely restarted the cycle that would only come to an end if something changed. Very well made video. Gets you thinking through artistic pondering which definately deserves an award. :)

This is such an incredible piece of art. I saw this for the first time almost five years ago, and have been in love with it ever since. I take it as a portrayal of human kind. Or civilized society in general. The heart could symbolize money, or power, or just whatever we have been in pursuit of as a people since the beginning of time. The video explains how history repeats itself, in the end you can see the same image of destruction as in the beginning. When he suffocates and drops the heart it gives an explanation as to where it can from before. It came from the last struggle. As a society we rebuild what we destroy. There are cities built on top of ruins of old cities. The skirmish for the heart has happened countless times through history. In most cases the heart is power. The mongols wanted power. The romans wanted power. Hitler wanted power. We have to be careful not to let greed run our society. Just something to think about.

    • @masmesmomas
      @masmesmomas Před 10 lety +13

SolarWindsRider First of all your comment was pretty damn defiant and disrespectful to all of the people who gave this wonderful film an award making it feel, at best, like you are probably an expert in the topic. Or maybe your ego is big enough to strip the judges (or whatever) who made these decisions from their opinion in the matter just because you believe that this film does not have a very deep meaning and interesting topics (or maybe you see them but don’t care). Or maybe, in the worst of all cases, you object about it because it is not a colorful and astonishingly beautiful film that could be compared with something that came from PIXAR. Truth is this film impressed not only someone like me who has no knowledge whatsoever about films, but also a lot more people... that many awards are not a product neither of coincidence nor of people being drugged.
Also, +ioDARKANGELoi Here is a link to an interview that Erick Oh gave on the matter www.asiansonfilm.com/2011/10/erick-oh-interview-animation-with-heart/ .... but still.... in the end, art is not only what the author tried to convey but also what you see in what he did. So it is not only open about its ending, it is also open about its meaning as any art piece.

    I don't quite understand it.
Does it mean people need to give away instead of being greedy and clinging to something till death, even though that is not something you can ever bring along with you (taking heart off and everyone died) and you lose your values, yourself (changing shapes of the head) as well as the chance for an understanding, friendship and love.
However I don't understand the love and colourful aspect of this film, neither about the women though. I see her being "blinded" by the "heart" and is forcing the man to comply with her, at first it starts out with the love (heart between the two) and something very beautiful, yet they all lost their character and love because of this heart (men women fighting in the end).
How is love and greed connected?

This short film, personally, resembles the struggle each one of us go through to find love and happiness. Through this grueling process we lose sight of who we are and end up in a state of confusion, essentially not knowing what we are actually fighting for. In this case, the "blobs" were so caught up in achieving love that it wound up killing everyone. The last "blob" that finally was able to understand what love is by getting to the heart ended up dying, as love itself can be the death of many who invest their whole life in accomplishing this cynical task.

أبرار If you interpret the heart thing as money, then I think this takes on a very different but clearer meaning. The fact that the symbol of greed in this video is something considered highly valuable and integral to life itself may be commentary on capitalist society and its inherit insanity due to its reliance on greed to function.

The Salvador Dali influence registered at 49 seconds with the Large Shape. The characters have no eyes/no vision. They don't even really see what it is that they're all fighting over. Blind greed, blind ambition. The music sometimes nods to Phillip Glass. Kudos to Oh and company for a really well-done piece! Smooth, supple and affecting. Thanks.

This animated film is very symbolic. God gave man a heart, it was up to man to decide what to do with their heart. The heart representing a soul. Once other humans discovered the gift, they became run over by greed and selfishness. The heart wasn't used for love. It was used for greed. The only time we see the people team up is to destroy a common enemy so they could gain their power. They all die in the end because the heart became corrupted. Once you dislocate yourself from love, their is no hope of ever regaining it. They died because we live for love if one doesn't love they don't live. Sadly this animation reflects to much of humanity, but it's all true. I believe that love should be shared, but this animation only shows one side of humanity. What about the people in the world who love and love eachother. They don't show humans sharing love. When in reality we all share some form of love. Love drives the world but if one falls we all fall and we fall into the depths of our sins.

This animation is a masterpiece in itself where there are doubts, love, moods of people and most importantly the community in which we live whose goal is to break us and it makes all of us evil instead of innocent , people loose their honesty and end up getting screwed and breaks every ' tie' of their lives after making certain irrational decisions and hence die because a fruit cannot grow without a tree similarly heart cannot grow without love....
