  • Bill O'Herlihy interviews Jack Charlton in December 1993 after Ireland had qualified for the World Cup to be held in USA in 1994. This rare interview has Bill putting the questions to Big Jack about the qualification campaign which ended with a tense encounter against Northern Ireland in Windsor Park.

This is a master class in interviewing technique by Bill O'Herlihy in how to get the person you are interviewing to open up without them realising they are opening up. A very revealing interview and Jack's answers to Bills questions give a great insight into the Ireland international football scene at the time. Rest in Peace Bill and Jack.

The thing nobody remembers (and it drives me nuts!) after THIS interview ...this team played 2 friendlies and a WC game .. the results were as follows Holland 1- 2 Rep Ireland, Germany 0 - 2 Rep Ireland ,Italy 0 - 1 Ireland. The best 3 game sequence in Irish sport (IMHO)

    • @paulswords5745

2 of them were friendlies, germany dont care about freindlies. hardly worth including,

      Ireland beat the Dutch 1 - 0 , not 2 -.1

Homecoming after 94 World Cup was an serious embarrassment. It made sense after Italia 90 - first ever World Cup - 4 games unbeaten and a narrow defeat to Tournament hosts. But we’re seriously hammered twice in USA.

Yet there was a massive turnout. It’s an Irish trait to be loyal to our sportspersons (Atleast it used to be). They’d beaten Italy in America and just qualifying from a very tough group was a great achievement in itself. The people wanted to say thank you. Remember that since 94 weve only qualified for one other World Cup

I wouldn't call 2-1 and 2-0 a hammering, in fairness. And Packie was to blame for one of the Dutch goals.

U.s.a 1994,beat italy... lost to Mexico in extreme unplayable heat, got point vs Norway we needed in heat edit: it finishing 0-0 says it all no1 can play in that heat...lost to star studded dutch team. 88 to 94 we had a serious team... at very least we had a manager who knew football, no domestic manager would have that knowledge, for me almost getting to WC semi final is an insane achievement. Only losing to italy in Rome. Very interesting what he says about the Spanish at the end there, it was prob not long after this the Spanish changed their whole infrastructure.

I remember this World Cup well and i was not surprised when Mexico stuffed us 3. 1. We were homeward bound unfortunately, and half of the country showed up in Dublin and we had no trophy on the bus down O’Connell street
