  • The Carl Gustaf is an 84 mm man-portable reusable anti-tank recoilless rifle produced by Saab Bofors Dynamics (formerly Bofors Anti-Armour AB) in Sweden. Although most rounds fired by the Carl Gustaf work on the classic recoilless principle, modern rounds sometimes add a post-firing booster that technically make it a rocket launcher.
    The first prototype of the Carl Gustaf was produced in 1946 as a lightweight anti-armor weapon, one of many similar designs of that era. While similar weapons have generally disappeared from service, the Carl Gustaf remains in widespread use today. A combination of light weight, low cost and widely varied ammunition types, makes the Carl Gustaf extremely flexible and able to be used in a wide variety of roles where single-purpose weapons like the M72 LAW passed out of service as newer tank designs rendered them ineffective.

    I used an earlier version of this weapon in the Swedish army. I remember it was important to have your mouth open while firing to save your ears from the immediate pressure of the blast.

    Dude, it is recoilless rifle... Was trained to operate it over 30 years ago. Bit of history for you yanks. When SF saw them in action in the Middle East by the Brit's. They liked it so much... It was procured for their inventory.

    • @giamcai9381
      @giamcai9381 Před 6 lety +2

      I too trained on this back in 91 I have a love-hate memory with this overall it's a basic but proven gun with a now wide variety of munitions it also has a few simple parts easy to disassemble and clean. But today this weapon you cannot kill modern main battle tanks with it no way it's mostly against softer targets like troop carriers maybe an apc mostly firesupport to cover advancing infantry troops on an objective the main problem I hated was it's a difficult weapon to carry you can only shoulder or sling it and I tried every combination. Short distance anybody can do it but if you forced march with this in full combat load for 10 klicks or walk for hours it's a killer ache on the shoulder I always request the GPMG sling which has a wider shoulder pad which is slightly more comfortable and with mg sling twisting bipod upwards then locking with your elbow also makes it easier to move otherwise annoying the bipod always hitting your thigh if you have to walk for hours. I seen some other armies we trained with they have unimog vehicles for their gun crews - so lucky man.

    • @davidkerr4374
      @davidkerr4374 Před 6 lety

      Funny that. I had the same training in it's use against soft skinned targets... The TI's said they were not much use against hard arnour even then... Also made for a mean bunker buster. As for carry. Over the shoulder, and 3 rounds in a plastic case in the other. The loader carried spare...

    • @giamcai9381
      @giamcai9381 Před 6 lety +3

      I think every gun crew is about the same, 2 man gun crew maximum upto 5 rounds unless you have a dedicated light vehicle maybe more, back then ours was 4-5 round we trained on M1 gun, 4 round in plastic canisters manpacked by 2nd gunner 1 extra round is chambered into the gun with safeties on of course peacetime we used dummy rounds but you can imagine on the M1 19.1 + 2.5 is damn heavy excluding other gun accessories and personal rifleman load ... about 50kg in total, I read the yanks are now using M3 gun which is 6.9kg that's so lucky and crazy good.

    Very vercetile system with a wide array of ammo: smoke, HEAT, AP, timed area burst, lumination, delayed detonation, etc.
    Extreamly cost effective since it can "replace" or act as artillery support or even air support.
