The Astrum - Night Timelapse

- This is a short trailer of the 30+ minutes of timelapse I shot in 2020 at locations in South Dakota, Wyoming and Arizona. It was shot with Nikon D850 cameras in still mode and rendered at 8K resolution. My past features have aired on the DirecTV 4K channel, a few are on Stingray Naturescape on CZcams. The Astrum feature may be available as a download in the future.

SpaceX Starlink satellites are visible in parking orbit right after the Feb 17, 2020 launch in several of the shots. They look like scattered stars that aren't moving across the sky. Normally satellites will streak across the sky in timelapse..

Hi Randy. Just saw this trailer and comments. Starlink satellites move quickly across the sky. They are in low earth orbit. When first launched they are around 200 miles up (parking orbit.) Once they are commanded to rise, they use ion engines to take them up to about 350 miles (service orbit.) "Parking" doesn't mean they aren't moving. Just a lower orbit. In both altitudes they take about 90 minutes to circle the earth, so they would be moving like most of the other satellites we see. To hold a relatively fixed position in our sky, the satellites would have to be about 22,000 miles up, much much higher than Starlink. Starlink avoided using high geostationary orbits because the distance is so far that there is a long signal delay -- which makes pauses in phone calls and really terrible response in online games. It's called latency. So that's why Starlink flies so close to the earth.
Yep, I have one and it works great roaming so far! What is odd it works better in the Black Hills of SD with trees, than it does at my registered address which is a wide open horizon. Where I get a few dropouts an hour lasting maybe 10 seconds or so. Still usable and much better than what I had. It will get better with more satellites I'm sure.

@@dakotalapse oh wow, I didn't know it was a combination of different places. I'm really hoping to visit a place like that and capture milkyway too. The milky way in my area can be seen too but very faint since I'm in the orange area as reported by deepskyfinder.

SD boy here, is the Milky Way really that much more visible and gorgeous down in Arizona than it is here? I guess it's been 20 years since I moved off the farm, but I do still get out of the city now and then.
The dry desert air does help, but at times it can be that clear up here.
